sv,
Though the above statement isn't exactly true, IR has handled Keeravani better than most MDs and has quite a few compositions in the raga. One can say that it's one of his favorite ragas, going by the number of songs.
Also, Thaalattum PoongAtru you mentioned is not KeeravANi. It's in fact set to Simhendra Madhyamam (the difference is Ma2 instead of Ma1)
Here are a dozen Keeravani numbers of IR that come to my mind:
1. KAtril Endhan geetham (Johny)
2. EnnuLLe ennuLLe (VaLLi)
3. MalargaLiley ArAdhanai (Karumbu Vil)
4. Thanga Changili (Thooral Ninnu POchu)
5. BoopALam isaikkum (same film)
6. PAdi paRandha kiLi (Kizhakku vAsal)
7. Unnai nAnaRiven (GuNa)
8. NenjukkuLLe InnAr endru (PonnumaNi)
9. Onna nenachen pAttu padichen (Apoorva SahodarargaL)
10. Chinna Chinna vaNNa kuyil (Mouna Ragam)
11. MalayOram Veesum kAthu (Mohan, Nadiya film)
and the latest
12. SiRu siRu ChiRagugaLil En manam (Konji pesalam)

I wish to add 2 of my favorite melodious songs to the list of Keeravanis composed by Ilayaraaja.
They are "Raasaave unnai vida maaten" , sung by Janaki from "AranmanaiKili". Tha bass in this song is noteworthy.
The next one is the old, haunting "Deiveega raagam Thevitaadha paadal" from "Ullaasa paravaigal". Jency's vocal limitation notwithstanding, the humming, music , soulful tune of this song have all contributed in making this song an evergreen melody

Ooraa Therinjikitten (Padikathavan) -- one of my favorites
Vaanathilirunthu Kulichu Vantha Naal (Poonthottam)
Munnam Seitha Thavam (Vanajaa Girijaa)
Poo Pookkum Maasam (Varusham Pathinaaru)
Enge Sellum Unthan Paathai (Sethu)
Enna Maranthaalum (Kaathal Saathi)

I agree, Rasika, IR has a number of favorite raagas (about 10 to 12, I believe): Mayamalavagowlai, Mohanam, Sudhadhanyasi, Vakhulabharanam, Shankarabharanam, Kalyani, Madhyamavathi, Natabhairavi, Sindhu Bhairavi, Gowrimanohari, Sivaranjani, and Keeravani are all the raagams I believe he has used the most.

how come two songs set in the same raaga can sound so different? How do you guys identify which raga a song belongs to? Is there any tutorial for this exercise in newtfmpage?

It came as a surprise to me that IR has composed 2 songs in the same ragam (keeravani) in the same film [Thanga Changili and BoopALam isaikkum from Thooral Ninnu POchu]. Is there any other occurrence of such?

Ilayaraja's nasal voice is disgusting to hear.
Only a downright "Nattan" will listen to that!
Ilaya Raja's days are over. Let him start a school to teach keyboards !

odd, IR used the raaga Sarasangi in two songs in Periya Veettu Panakkaran. The songs are 'Muthu Muthu Meedhai Pottu' and 'Malligaiye Malligaiye Tholodu Pol'-- the former is a missing you soga paattu, whereas the latter expresses joy of the lovers reuniting.
Yes, it does happen that the MD will use the same raagam in two or more songs in a single album.

Odd and Purv:
In the movie Andaan Adimai (2000), IR has used Gowri Manohari in two songs -- correct me if I am wrong. One is "Undan Rajiyathil" and the other is the "koottu" song "Thillu Mullu".
Other Gowri Manoharis of IR are:
1. Mutthamizh Kaviye Varuga
2. Santhana Kaatre Senthmizh Ootre
3. Kanna Varuvaaya
Also since you mentioned Periya Veettu Panakkaran, it is a classical album what with Sarasangis (2 of them) and a Vachaspathi (Nikkattuma Pogattuma).
IR has used his genius to tease all of us ...since Vachaspathi sounds very much like Kalyani until its Pa...i.e. Ri, Ga, Ma are all all sound like Kalyani (Ri and Ga are Kalyani's life giving i.e. jiva swaras). Only Da and Ni imprint the Vachaspatiness, if I may.
So the initial violin, flute piece sounds like kalyani, until the "nikkattuma" piece precedes Mano's Nikkattuma vocals. Nikkattuma is where IR defines his Vachaspathi.

Another Gowri Mahohari in my opinion, is
Oru Kaaviyam from the movie "Aruvadai Naal" I guess. I hope the movie is correct, but the song fir sure is correct.
IR has sung this song himself. No violin pieces in this song. It's amazing how IR who is so given to violins in his somgs has not bothered to use even one in many other songs!
One other such song is "Mandram Vantha Thendralukku" from Mouna Ragam. There are lot many more...just cant think of them now.

The best Gowri Manohari from IR is from Thooranthil Naan Kanda Un Mugam... (Nizhalgal). IR has brought out the Naunces of the Raga very well.

Hi Dorai,
I had not listened to this song at all! Thanks for pointing to a wonderful IR composition in Gowri Manohari. I cannot agree more with you on how IR has brought out the nuances of the raga in a a very classical way. IR establishes Gowri Manohari right in the opening brief alapana by S. Janaki. I like the elegant phrase "aadum kaatrile"...skipping Pa and sliding right onto Ma from Ni! Wow!
This song reminds very much of Kanna Varuvaaya from Manathil Uruthi Vendum, with the "iktara" rythm in the background, extensive use of the veena and violins and the alluding to Meera's squirming request to Krishna. Also the second charanam in both the songs is in the madhyamakalam (faster speed, a very Mutthuswamy Dikshitaresque feature), which leads to a magnificient crescendo.
But I think I prefer this song over Kanna Varuvaaya, as it is way too advanced for that time.
Any more rare Gowri Manoharis from IR?

TNA,
Good observation
on "aadum kaatrile"...skipping Pa and sliding right onto Ma from Ni!. That was my favourite phrase/part too in the song.
Some of other IR's Gowri Manoharis (that I have enjoyed) are as below:
Poobalam Isaikkum -- Thooral Ninu Pochu
Chinna Chinna Vannakuyil -- Mouna Ragam
Thendralai Kandukolla -- Nillave Mugam Kaatu
Pon Vaanum Panneer Thoovum -- Indru Nee Naalai Naan
Any comments?
