There has been immense cases of different music directors composing tunes for a same situation and same script in various languages.
For example:
Laxmikanth-Pyarelaal composed for Dayavaan, (The Hindi remake of Mani Rathnam's gang epic, Nayagan, originally tuned by Ilayaraja in Tamil).
A R Rahman composed music for Priyadarshan's Doli Sajake Rakhna (The Hindi remake of Fazil's Kadhalukku Mariyaadhai, originally tuned by Ilayaraja in Tamil.
Mani Sharma composed music for S J Surya's Telugu Kushi (The Telugu remake of S J Surya's Tamil Kushi, originally tuned by Deva in Tamil. And, also Anu Mallik tunes the same script in Hindi earlier this year. All were very well accepted by the audience.
In all the above cases the script was the same and also the song situations and were also accepted by the audience without debacles. But the tunes, orchestra, compositions and singers were all different and so was the time of their releases.
In this thread shall we discuss such music. No Ilayaraja, A R Rahman debacle please.

MSV has done this many times successfully. The first time he got to compose in Tamil for a remake he put his foot down and refused to simply re-dub the Hindi songs concerned. Particularly good ones of his are Sivagamiyin Selvan (Aradhana), Billa (Don), Nalai Namade (Yaadon Ki Baraat), Thee (Deewar which wasn't really known for its songs). An earlier poster here narrated how Naushad once redid a "Vishu" (that's what Naushad calls MSV) song so well that MSV refused to touch his harmonium for three days! MSV as I have said earlier is "Mettin Mannar". His tunes are so solid that you will forget the Hindi counterpart.
These days no one takes such risks any longer. I would like to see a composer produce a fresh set of popular tunes when the movie is remade in another language.

And also Priyadarshan's GOPURA VAASALILAE composed by Ilayaraja, and when he made the film in Hindi, it had Rahman's score. (Kabhi na Kabhi).

Gopura Vasalile's music, in my opinion, was much better than Kabh na Kabhi's music. The movie, itself, works better in Tamil than Hindi.

I feel Gopura Vasalile was very good in the original malayalam version than the tamil version

MSV's Maro Charitra ==> Laxmikant Pyarilal's

A few more examples:
Woh Kaun Thi --------> veda's Yaar Nee
Do aakhein barah Haath -----------> KVM's Pazhandu Vazhga
Shor -----------------> Shankar Ganesh's Osai
Dil-e-nadaan ------------> Ilamai O. (Ilayaraaja)
Miss Mary -----------------> Missamma (R Sudarshanam?)
Shankarabharanam ----------> LPs Sur Sangam
Apoorva Raagangal ---------> LPs Ek Nai Paheli

i think, missamma(telegu) is the original version.
Aneeyathipraava(malayaaLam) is the original for Kaadhalukku mariyaadhai and the MD for the MalayaaLam version is ouspachchan. Can take almost all fazil's thamizh movies which usually have ouspachchan or other MDs in the malayaaLam original and IR in thamizh remade version.
Naattaamai MD sirpi became pedhdha raayadu in telegu MD ?
Many Sridhar's movies were remade in hindhi having MSV as MD in thamizh version and different MDs in Hindhi.
btw, the famous "evergreen superhit songs" telegu original -> aduththaveettu peN (MD: VR?) -> Padosan (MD: KA?)

also the Unique Gentleman, having ARR in thamizh and ARR...oops....Anu Malik in Hindi...he..heee...
andha aezhu naatkkaL MD: MSV of thamizh, became wo saath din MD: ??. aenga chinna raasa of thamizh(MD: SG) became baeta in hindhi(MD:Aanand Milind?); but baeta didn't have original songs two songs from aenga chinna raasa and two songs from IR's telegu hit. many bhagyaraaj's film were remade in hindhi with native MDs in HFM.

we can't consider most of veda films. because the songs will also be a remake of hindhi version :-)

Kupps,
Music for PADOSAN was by the great R.R.Burman. Also, upon your posting reg. many bhagyaraaj's movie made in Hindi, I recollected ANOKHI RAASTA (dir:Bhagyaraj;music:LP??) which was remade from ORU KAIDHIYIN DAIRY (dir:?? Music:Ilaiyaraja)

I think remade movies present a unique oppurtunity to the music directors to showcase the talent. It may probably be the closest parameter to compare two Music directors.
In that context MSV won most of the matchups. Almost all of his songs stood out compared to the songs in the remade version.
Marocharitra, Varumiyin Niram Sigappu, Kadalika neramilla, Nengil Oru alaiyam, Aboorva ragangal had great songs, their hindi versions could not reach the same standard.
Even the movies like sivagamin selvan, nalai namadhe, Thillumullu, Billa, which were other way around, he did come out songs, which were equally good.
I think, IR worked only in very few remade movies from hindi. He has very little sample size to compare with MSV.
1. Oh mane mane -> Julie ( hindi)/ sattikari(malayalam).
It has only one good song - Pon Mane Thedhue, other songs are ok. Julie had at least two great songs.
2. Priyanka -> Damini ( Hindi). Damini has few good songs ( albeit copied),
priyanka had only one good song.
Thayagam, Maa veeran both remade from hindi movies had great songs. Don't know about the actual hindi movies and the songs.
Did deepam a remade movie from hindi?. It also had good songs.
IMO, ARR did better in Dhol sazne ki rakha ( hindi kadalaku mariyathi ) than Kadalaku Mariyathi (IR).
Thanks

Recollected ANOKHI RAASTA (dir:Bhagyaraj;music:LP??) which was remade from ORU KAIDHIYIN DAIRY (dir:?? Music:Ilaiyaraja)
I guess it was the other way round. Oru Kaithiyin Dairy (Dir: Bharathiraja Story: Bhagyaraj Music: IR) was remade in Hindi (Dir: Bhagyaraj).
Personally, I felt the hindi version was well directed than the tamil. Also, the last abathamana scenes (where Kamal overdid) were changed in Hindi.

e.hari,
1. Oh mane mane has 2 more great songs in it.
'Roja ondru ullangayil poothadhu..' is a great great song by SPB+SJ. Listen to it and you will know. There is one more nice song in that movie but I don't remember. It had 3 in total.
2. priyanka had only 2 songs. I haven't heard Damini but priyanka songs were great. I just love 'vanakkuyile'. Great job by IR+SPB.
3. Thyagam and deepam and all other balaji productions were remake of hindi films only. Balaji was quite known for that. All songs in Thyagam were good (including the dappangoothu song 'olagam verum iruttu' by TMS). Similarly in Deepam. Couple of songs in Maa veeran were good but not all. IR shouldn't have given all the songs to Malaysia vasudevan... well... that's history now.
IMO, IR did better in kadhalukku mariyadhai than Dhol sazne ki rakha. c'mon, ennai thalatta varuvalo is a masterpiece.

ARR hasn't yet composed afresh for any remake.... Ooops just wait. Doli sajake... was a mish-mash. But one movie where he did well was "En Swasa Kaatre" which was remade in Hindi by Govind Nihalani (?) starring Ajay Devgun and don't know who... It had a few good numbers especially Khamoshi Rat by Vinod Rathod.

Thillu mullu, Varumayin Niram Sigappu and Billa are all by MSV...IR's first film with Balachander was much later- Sindhu Bhairavi...There were a few movies before SB, produced by Kavithalaya, with IR as MD, like Netrikann...
