i personally think kamal is trying to save budget by not roping in big MD's or if its not that, kamal has developed bad taste for music

Kamal will soon be seen in an out an out comedy with Jayaram, Ramesh Arvind, Yuhi Sethu (of Nayyandi Durbar fame) and Sreeman for company.
To be directed by KS Ravikumar the film, titled Panchathanthiram, has music by Deva. The script has been penned by Crazy Mohan.
Simran, Ramya Krishnan, Sanghavi and Aishwarya are the female lead in the film. Likely to be released in May, the buzz is that the film is inspired by Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai.

I strongly disagree to this. If this was true, he would have opted for IR.
Avvai Shamughi, Pammal K Sambandham and now Panchathanthiram... way to go Deva!
Best song of 2001 was Malai malai malai brought to this world by none other than DEVA!

..Since when did you begin condemning other people's taste?...
u r right, ROTFL. I shudn't have condemned their (Deva fans') taste.
but it was jus pushing it when DavaRasigan claimed it was the best song of 2001.
Apart from the fact that the picturisation for this song was Gross, it was actually a song making fun of a Hindu bhajan, or so I was told. So I have a valid reason to condemn the song, I guess.

When people claim IR's obscure songs are the songs of the year and when ARR fans claim that all his music are hits, why can't some one claim that Deva's song is the best.
Like it or not, Malai malai malai is a huge hit (and not for the picturisation.) It was written by one of the biggest Muruga bakthan's of our times, Thiruvaalar Vaalee! :)
And anyway, the song does not appear to be inspired and is very enjoyable. :)

and he decided to abuse his deity for crass commercial purposes. How pathetic is that.
And ROTFL, I was wondering where u fitted in all this while. So now we know.

WhyNot - Actually, I fit the role of your bitter half's name - Neutral Fan - much better the does. :)
I enjoy good Tamil film songs, regardless of its originator. I don't go around proclaiming that one MD is god given and show contempt for every other MD. So, I am a GTFMF. :)

Thiruvaalar Vaalee is a 70 year old man and has been in the industry long before you were born.
Please think carefully, before you pass careless remarks. :)

ROTFL, I dont care if he is 70, 7 or 17. Or even if he was God himself.
I'd say "netrikkan thirappinum kutram kutrame"
That was a cheap way to distort a diety's name and the crass picturisation added insult to injury.

WhyNot, how is Valee responsible for the picturisation?
Nakkeerar vasanam ellaam sarithaan, but do you remember what happened to Keeran? :)
Just curious, which part of the lyrics do you find offensive. Others' please refrain from jumping into the kulam. you too, twilight_zone! :)

ROTFL, i'm not suggesting tat Valee is responsible for picturisation. I was jus expressing my disgust for the whole thing. (plus, i've only heard the song when i watch it on sun network...cos i didnt actually download it for listening pleasure and i dont get to hear Tamil songs playing at the nearby coffee shops, as a result the song is interwined wit the picturisation in my mind). And ur the one who mentioned Valee, as if that wud make it any better.
What I found offensive is this:
the line malai malai marudha malai, venkata selai were broken up and repeated in a disrespectful manner. U know when u say mantras like say the Gayathri mantra or something simple like "Om Ganeshaya Namaha", you're not supposed to break it up half way. Bcos the sound itself has a certain spiritual power and distorting it is breaking up the divine energy present in the name of the lord. That's also the reason u need to get ur pronounciation right. That song made a joke out of the whole thing.
If this happened to other religions all hell wud be loose by now and the song wud have been banned.
and ROTFL, I was giving an analogy on what if the lyricist was God himself. But I have a strong feeling that God did not pen those lyrics himself. :-)
And I dont think Valee is God jus cos he's a Murugan devotee or he's 70.

on: Mon Feb 25 10:43:58 EST 2002
it is venggala silai, not venkata silai (thirupathi Balaji, please forgive her!)
And the line is no mantra!
Other religions are not Hinduism and that;s why it makes Hindusism so great, don't you think? :)
Vayasukku mariyaathai kodukka maattelaa? :)

...venggala silai, not venkata silai...
i'm asking from ignorance, dont they both mean the same thing? that's what i assumed.
I was using mantras as an example to demonstrate why I found those lines offensive. It still has the names of the deities and that's the point I am trying to convey here.
...Other religions are not Hinduism and that;s why it makes Hindusism so great, don't you think? :)...
I think Hinduism has it's own unique qualities as do other religions, but I'll be cautious about concluding Hinduism being so great when compared to other religions, cos tat's the sort of attitude that leads to conflict.
You dont have to use the tolerance of Hinduism to other religions as an excuse to promote tolerance for the degenration and abuse of Hinduism itself. What is within Hinduism and its teachings are separate from how Hinduism is glamourised or abused in the tamil movie or tfm industry. Hinduism remains what it is and no one is denying that it is a good religion, but how we preserve it and maintain it is a different story altogether.
And ROTFL, don't make it sound like I dont respect elders. I jus dont think that the fact the lyricist was 70 is good enuf an excuse to ignore the offending aspects of that song. That was a pathetic excuse you came up with.

WhyNot?
"venkala silai" > bronze statue; "venkata silai" (haven't heard this usage before) > statue of lord venkatesha!
isn't your yarn about 'divine energy' 'spiritual power', blah blah, all about getting defensive after jumping to a hasty judgement? since when has an ARR fan become a stickler for rules or protocol?
btw, did you see the epic STAR? There's a BGM piece (Sabesh-Murali, or ARR?) that appears when Jyothika walks the streets in the night fully decked with jewelry (Bharathi's pudhamaippen in the director's warped imagination!); would you say that was ethical?

...isn't your yarn about 'divine energy' 'spiritual power', blah blah, all about getting defensive after jumping to a hasty judgement?...
No mate. Read my very first post on this. I said it got banned in Singapore. Why else wud it get banned in Singapore if not for the offending religious aspects of the song (jus like the movie Bombay was banned in Singapore bcos Islamic groups there protested). I've had this long before in my mind. It's not a yarn, it is a truth.
..."venkala silai" > bronze statue...
Is that what it means? So what does 'vengala kural' mean then? Again, asking out of ignorance.
As for Star or whatever else ARR fare u wish to discuss about, that's another thread mate. I was expressing my disgust for the Malai Malai song, which in my opinion does not qualify to be called the song of the year 2001, as proclaimed by a Deva fan. Now if i did say anything about ARR or his music here, then you have a point now. But I did not, so don't try to bring in a new topic.
btw, thanks for posting as suresh. Much better than 'boohoo' and 'whinenot'. :-)

So what does 'vengala kural' mean then?
vengalam means the alloy bronze. if vengalam is hit it produces sound very well (better than many other metals and alloys). That is why vengalam is used for making bells(koil mani). Vengalam is also used to create statues, its a major constituent in aimpon silai (so aimpon is an alloy having another alloy as its component). Now the word "vengala kural" is an example of uruvagam (am i right? trying to thoosithattify my high school grammar). Uruvagam because the voice(kural) of a person sounds like vengalam; vengalam ponRa kural on becoming an uruvagam is reduced to vengala kural. IMO "Vengala silai" and "vengala kural" have nothing in common apart from vengalam.
now i guess i don't have to thoosithattify my high school grammar once again for "mezhugu sila" and "mezhugu vaththi", NOM.
