Dear Friends,
Let us vote for 'Adi Rakkamma' from THALAPATHI as our choice for the World's Top Ten Songs poll conducted by BBC!
I am suggesting this song because if in case the BBC people listen to the nominated songs, they will feel knocked out on hearing our Maestro's 150 Vioins' Strings Ensemble!
Let us all do it at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/
Yours Always Musically,
Vijay.

Frankly, does Cliff Richard still have fans who prefer his to Elvis' hits? And, Cher' fans? How can they believe I Believe can be heard outside a gym? Vande Mataram - from where are these guys comin? BBC is asking for the top popular tunes not lyrics. Rahman's Anjali and Chaiyya Chaiyya - what about Sirpy's Angela and Anu Malik's Bhaiyya Bhaiyya?
I think BBC is having the most fun ;--) But, comeon let us vote to the finish. Or, is this some publicity tool for Bombay Dreams?

http://www.raaja.com has the complete 'Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu' song in MP3.
Enjoy! and encourage your Indian friends to vote.
There's nothing wrong in the fact that most entries in support of the above song have come from India. This, in spite of the fact that Indians's vote are divided as they are rooting for many other songs!!!
For those who can't digest the fact that an Indian composer is leading the poll, here's some old news: Amitabh Bachchan won the 'Greatest star of stage or screen' poll 2 years ago! How many of these critics questioned the selection at that time? Visit link below:

I agree with you. Questioning the validity of the poll and criticizing it is going to take no one anywhere really..
I know of umpteen really stupid polls in the US where the whole thing was rigged actually and people still beleive it.
Case to point : The Oscars..
And the fact that the majority of votes come from India, indicates that the global Indian populace is definitely tracking its favorite artists and the internet revolution is going big time in India. I know of a couple of years back, where browsing meant email and chat.
And the fact that Rakkamma is at the top speaks of the songs true popularity since we only a tamil/south indian population is going to vote for the song whereas a large Indian population is going to vote for Vande Mataram which really made it big nationally.
So whether Raja wins or not, I am happy that people have taken note of it and its getting good revival coverage.

Not bad. Pretty impressive for IR fans. They have come a long way since the "who cares what westerners think", "who cares about the stinking western media", "ARR fans r western bootlickers for quoting western reviews", "what do winning polls, accolades and awards mean anyway", etc etc etc to getting pretty worked up by a poll conducted by the western media. Good work. Keep it up.
Now the world is going to realise the world's greatest song and the world's greatest composer.
btw, how was the Hindi version "tututu tutu tara"? recieved up Nth?
"BBC is asking for the top popular tunes not lyrics."
I thought it says world's fav song or something. I didn't know a song meant tunes. I thought lyrics are what gives the song not only it's beauty, but the melody as well, in many cases. But suddenly the high-lyrical-quality-demanding, IR fans have decided an odd candidate for the best song in the world.
Also, do u notice tat there r 2 songs in the top 10 list, both soundtracks in movies by a single director (diff MDs tho). Only difference is tat while one MD still sings praises of tat director and openly declares the inspiration he provides, the other one had the usual fallout marking the end of his alliance.
But now let us hope RKT will become the world's no 1 song in the BBC polls (who cares where the votes come from or how many times each person votes for), and we'll have a true TFM song as world's no 1 song. Then the world will realise IR's greatness, IR sites will get thousands of hits each day, and the possibities are endless. HW offers (now tat we care abt the westerners), HFM offers (now now, the world consists of the tasteless Northies as well), I exhaust myself wit the endless possibilities. This is far better than every Oscar, National and Filmfare award. We get to rig.. er, I mean, decide the results this time.
Let's hope ARR fans or fans of any other musician wont doctor engineer or lawyer the votes. It can only be real, pure and 100% true if IR remains at the top till Dec 21st. And it will. I'm sure IR fans will see to tat.
btw, will there be any formal recognition conferred at the end of this?

I am pretty happy that there are three Indian songs there. But how come we say IR is no.1 as the artists listed are the singers and the VM song which we pretty well know that is of ARR composition, its been credited to BCC as they would have thought that he sang it. Why I am saying this is BBC might not as well recognise the MD at all in their final result. It is only the Indian media which talk about the MD and has already declared IR winner (hope it happens for good). But, in MD category also if we see ARR's name is there in two songs in top 10. No..no I am not for a fight, but when a whole lot of knowledgable people were dead against the western media and their reviews about a poor album from a even poorer ARR, how come suddenly the same western media has become a voice of justice to say who is the best. But anyway, I believe me I adviced most of my relatives to vote of RKT or CC only and I think most of them will vote only RKT as we want to see an INDIAN song in the top. RK fans are a big factor here. One of friend who works in a big software company has told me that he himself has voted 20 times yesterday of RKT as he wants his thalaivar's song in top.

Hmm, crawling out of the woodwork, aren't we? Rigging, the RK factor.. what next, the Amrish Puri factor, global warming, spanish oil spill, ... ? Keep the creative juices flowing..
WN, you obviously don't visit yahoo fan groups, neither have you seen what's quoted in other threads about ARR fans strategising on how to bulk vote. We believe you...
Not that I care for Rakkamma much, would've chosen 'Sundari kaNNal' in the same movie. Atleast would've proved something for those looking for elusive Mozarts in the east.
Why I think 'Rakkamma' must win - for too long, we've been told Indian cinema is Bollywood or Satyajit Ray (depending on which side of the cinema divide you stood), Raj Kapoor (and Subash Ghai!!) the showman of Indian cinema, Amitabh the actor of the millenium, Lata M the ...
To this date, despite south technicians dominating bollywood with premium fees, negative stereotypes in hindi cinema and national advertising haven't moved beyond the cooing of 'aiyyoo amma' or the imagery of 'mami with flowers in her hair and accented hindi' or 'mama in veshti and vibhuti pattai and manjaL pai in hand '. That the 'regional' cinema qualitatively and quantitatively outnumbers hindi cinema by a comfortable margin is a fact lost on the majority.
If 'chaiyya chaiyya' or 'VM' win, it will only reinforce the stereotype of India being one homogenous mass celebrating the 'magical realism' of b.wood, and relegating any lingua apart from Hindi as insignificant others. Even the few from the south - ARR, Mainratnam, Santosh Sivan.. - that have crossed the cultural divide successfully have all been co-opted as Bollywood icons..
So, even while 'Rakkamma' must sound infra-dig to sophisticates and especially must send a particular section of non resident thamizhars bristling with angst (we can't play this for our norwegian friends, can we?), this must win for it's not just about thamizh chauvinism or an IR cult thing.
It's about showing people outside that thamizh cinema is alive and popular, that there is a mass of people who patronise a cinema form/culture other than 'b/wood', more particularly that there are indeed a good no. of literate & net-savvy Indians who don't speak Hindi, and that Indian cinema doesn't start with 'Shri 420' and end with 'Devdas'.
If it indeed does last the course, in its fleeting moments of glory, the Rakkamma win will allow weary veterans such as IR, SPB and Vaali their brief seconds under the sunshine. Whether they deserve it or not, arguable as always :)

Seriously, this poll is a lot of fun. no pun intended. ("just go out to have a good time and just have fun." - i like this quote.)
Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu is a very ordinary tune, and IR's usual magic of orchestration, in this song's case he went on a very ecstatic level to give the song desired effect. That is the charm of this song, which is a feat I've not come across before. Musicians, bands work for the perfect tune to sell their compositions. IR doen't have to do that, because he works on a level rest of the world cannot comprehend how the heck can he get inspired for such orchestration for mediocre tunes. That is why I vote for this song as world' no.1 anyday anytime. Beatles has got perfect tunes, Salil Choudhry, ABBA, Dire Straits and all, but where is that spellbinding effect, my friends?
About "song", BBC did not specify. I don't believe song to be a poem, it is music. Do birds sing with words? The words and ideas conveyed thru words cloud the purpose of the song. It is to give feeling from sounds not words. All the world talks of words, imo words don't mean anything, the tune gives the magic of music.
The world wants to know 'who wrote the song', without that knowledge they cannot generally accept and appreciate the music! That is strange for me. To enjoy songs, especially IR' why do you need to understand the words? Isn't that why he focuses on the instrumental portions too much, to get you to appreciate music for the sounds, not the words.

archivist,
Its a basic problem with all pop western style music making. They write a song, make sure it rhymes with some particular tune and then add music to it. Hence the importance for lyrics. IR's style is to compose tune, and then add lyrics to it. West is not familiar, in fact it is not even a common practice in India, with such compositions.
Music and its subtleties are the forte of true composers, like Beethovan, Bach and of course IR.
Their music will sound good with or without lyrics.
