Great news indeed. Congratulations to Vikram and Vikram fans.
Although as a die-hard Kamal fan I am dissapointed that Kamal didn't get it for Virumaandi, I am glad that the award has gone to a well deserving actor in Vikram.
Hopefully we will see the likes of Vikram and Surya win many more national awards.
I am sure this award will rejuvenate Vikram and we can expect many more great portrayals from him in the mould of Sethu, Kasi, and Siththan.
Today is a good day to be a Tamizhan:-) I am proud.

MNT,
This award announcement is for films released during 2003.
Virumaandi got released during 2004 pongal time. Hence would not qualify for 2003 awards.
Just fyi, Meera Jasmine had also got the Kerala state award for Best actress for the malayalam movie.

Thanks. I'm even happier now:-)
Just saw this news and got confused:-)

Seems like the Hindiwalas are upset with pretty boy not getting the award.
Hard to imagine they would give the award to a Tamil actor two years in a row. They'll probably do some politicing to avoid that.

I think when the movie was released doesnt matter but when it was censored. I remember couple of years ago Kamal got a movie to the censors so that it could compete for the awards but got released in January. Not sure, though!

mnt,
I think Virumaandi can qualify only next year as it was released in Jan 2004 and not 2003.

True, Kamal had gotten the censor certificate cleared by dec 31 2003 for " virumandi", a requirement for nominations to be considered for that year. In fact kamal has done similar such attempts in the past to be included for the nominations.
I was hoping for " Anbe shivam" a far superior portrayal and a slightly different character which he had never attempted ( not te duets with Kiran), I still feel (IMHO)Nalla character was much better potrayed by Kamal than the sithan character by Vikram ( Vikram clearly had overacted in many scenes, he definitely lacks subtle expressions and even Bala could have presented his character in a better way, as Vikram himself has mentioned, his Seeyan ( sethu) character was much better and definitely award deserving).
About Viru, it is probably not going to be in the race for next year as it was kamal (As Virumandi Character, once again a terrific portrayal and acting by Kamal ), Hrithik, and one Datattreya ( kannada) were the tough contestants against whom Vikram won the race.
Still ...Congrats to Vikaram possibly one of the best current actors if he stops acting in the crappola movies like Dhool and the usual masal flicks Saami etc...

hee hee, too much masala results in ajeernam; that's what happened here. One guy even goes to the extent of saying it's impossible to beat Hrithik's performance; this guy hasn't even seen pithamagan!. They live in their own little world, where everything from bollywood(sic) is THE best. We can sure expect a lot of politics next season.

I was under the impression that 'Anbe Shivam' was censored within Dec 2002 so that it could qualify for the national awards 2002&'Virumaandi' was censored by dec2003 to ensure qualification for the 2003 list.So how could 'Anbe Shivam'be eligible for 2003,it should be only 'Virumaandi'.Anyway Kamal deserved an best actor award for 'AS' either in 2002/03&Virumaandi deserved the award for atleast the best tamil film instead of Eyarkai&also best art direction. As for Vikram,of course it was better performance than Hrithik's but he overacted towards the end,it was crude(it might go with the character)&most importantly it was not a hearttouching potrayal.Speaking of Kamal plz remember that out of the world performances like in Sagarasangamam&Swathimuthyam was also not given it's due recognition.
