Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan,
Great post, as usual.
Thank you for reminding "enakkum unakkum vazakku". Such a rare song. There is also a song "eakkoru uthavi sei" from Ayiraththil Oruththi which according to tamilcinema.com was released in 1975.

Saravanan, pullarikka vechutteenga!! Yezhu Swarangalukkul & Kelviyin Naayagane are my most favorite VJ songs. I'm sure they rank pretty high in everyone's list.

Saravanan -
Walking through the 70s music scene has turned into journey of rediscovery with you as guide! Thank you for such a fine and laudable excursion!
We're following you, mesmerised, like the children behind the pied piper of Merlin, counting the VJ milestones, and a new song in our hearts every time we cross one...
We're with you. All the way. With gratitude.
Anuradha and Kaumudi: could you please drop me a line at : naaz99@yahoo.com
I have some information for you. Thanks.

Saravanan,
Thanks for the great synopsis. Iam really proud when i realise that you were also my school senior in Gill Adarsh.
Last night I watched the movie Darling Darling Darling in the DVD and the SPB-VJ duet -Azhagiya mithilayil featured in the movie was indeed a pleasant one to listen late at night. VJ's rendering that too the line - eh radha (spb) for which she goes -ah ah ah then he sings I love you for which she replies oh ooh ho.. -this was a real classy one.

Saravanan,
Your postings are very informative and interesting. I love VJ songs very much.
Regarding the ragams used in Ezhu Swarangalukul..., master piece by MSV- VJ combination, it starts off with Panthu varali , goes to Ranjini, Sindhu Bhairavi and Kambhoji, each Charanam beautifully gliding back to Panthuvarali , a typical MSV stamp.Definitely it is song of the century.
The other song, Kelviyin.... is compposed with kanaada and Hamsanadam. Effortless singing by VJ on high pitch in this song!
Hope your coverage includes Meenava Nanban songs
( 3 songs by VJ - 2 duets ' Thangathil Mugam... with KJY and Neram Pournami Neram... with SPB and 1 solo 'Pongum Kadalosai... ( set in Valaji - what a song !). Which year it got included?
I can not help remembering the truly classical ' Ammani Azhagu Migum Kanmanai... ( with TMS ) from Avan Oru Sarithiram (set to chaste Dharmavathi) . VJ's diction of Pallavi , especially, the line 'Aadi Varum Penmani....' is heavenly. I have heard pure carnatic musicians wondering at this compostion and the way it's sung. Kudos to MSV - VJ - TMS combo for this song!
Hope u will add more info on these gems.

Did anyone notice how VJ sings the same line differently each time it is repeated in "Sridevi Varam Ketkiraal". Just pick the the line "Sridevi ..." and follow it every time it is repeated. And in the stanza "raagam en kaiyil.." she has submits herself to the lyrics and it plays out in her expression. What an involvement! I wish I could offer a better recording :-(

Neel D -
Your "baba" song is heavenly. In fact, I am beginning to (re)discover the excellence of VJ all over again in the tamizh devotionals you have offered at the site.
But for the fact that they are private "devotional" albums, all the songs you have selected could easily have been memorable melodies in any film. In fact, I would add that some of them are better than VJs "film" devotionals!
You can listen to Azhaithaen and Nenjam Unnai - just for the varied tonal treasures in the recital of those first lines...Such amazing grace and perfection.

Azhaithaen seems like an inspiration from "Parthen Sirithen", in both lyrics and tune (Sahana ragam)

Ammayana Unnai Azhaithaen is also a gift. "Amma" and the many profundities of that word and concept are so deeply mined by VJ in that song.
Semborul Sokkaesar...Then Paadi Seemaikku Vazhvalikkum Viruppil - The movement at that midpoint is another VJ trademark.
I heard a recent devotional by VJ from the album Maruvoorale: Mazhaiye Mazhai Tharum Payire - The first tamizh devotional, I think, with a mellow hindustani influence. Have you heard it, Neel D?

Naaz,
Yes I have heard the "mazaiyE" song. Nicely done both by VJ and the MD. Such fine songs hardly reach people because they are in devotional albums.
Everyone,
I have a few wedding related songs. I will be uploading one a day. Today's upload is "KaNNukku azagA mAppiLLa" by VJ/MVD/PJ. I will let you keep guessing what the next one is going to be.

What I remember of avan thaan manithan - sivaji falls in love with manjula and gets married to her and they have a kid. Manjula dies and he hires J as the governess - there is a birthday song where the kid opens a large box - out pops J and sings a song. What happens after that I haven't a clue! I'm recollecting this from watching the movie in a theater in the 70s when I was 6 or 7, so if anyone knows better, pl correct me:-)
Minor corrections:
Enakkaga nee azhalaam iyarkkayil nadakkum
azhuthaal
Endrum aduthaduthu nadakkum un kaiyil illai
nadappum

Your description of EZHU SWARANGALUKKUL is wonderful...you spoke my mind out. Thats exactly how I felt when I heard this song. This was *the* song that I heard at the house of a Tamil speaking friend. This was the song which introduced me to VJs repertoire. And gave me a glimpse of the range of her voice and her semiclassical singing abilities. Just my opinion - the highlight of the whole song is the stunning alaap in the beginning. This song transcends any language barrier. I am sure it is Vaani's own favourite. I can never forget this song throughout my life.
Kelviyin naayagane is yet another such gem. Along with Vaani, I will also take this opportunity to praise BSS....I am stunned by her control at the high pitch too, just like Vaani.
Another song which stunned me in a similar manner was Aaanathineeyara. While Ezhu Swarangalukkul seems plaintive (Panthuvarali seems a raaga with a sad tinge...esp. its Hindustaani equivalent sounds extremely grim, pensive....), Aaanathineeyara is extremely zestful, vibrant, full of the most surprising changes of pitch.

AVR, really true. BSS had done very well in that song. pathetic, she too was not encouraged well later.

BTW I have heard that P Susheela has sung the Telugu version of EZHU SWARANGALUKKUL. Is this true? Is it an identical tune or a different one? Any pointers?

Thank you, all, for the encouragement. I am scared that now I have to match up to your expectations- Anyway your continued support is very reassuring.
Neel, reg. that song 'Enakkoru udhavi sei'- I have seen a CD of SPB songs, crediting it to 'Aayirathil Oruthi', which film, as you have rightly pointed out, did come in 1975. But I have recorded that song from a record of the film 'Kaalamadi kaalam' (1977). That is why I thought I will include it in 1977. Can anyone clarify if that song is from 'Aayirathil Oruthi'or 'Kaalamadi Kaalam'?
Naaz,I am a little worried about the Piped Piper comparison!!! I am sure our journey will have a happier ending for all of us! BTW, wasn't he the 'Piped Piper of Hamlyn'? (Merlin, if I remember right, was the oracle in King Arthur's court.)
Jeyaram, thanks for the technical details. Meenava Nanban had one more VJ song too- Kannazhagu Singarikku (TMS-VJ). MN came in 1977.
Kik, thank you for the corrections.
AVR, thank you for the 'Opening Alaap' reminder. Yes, it is indeed a superb opening. Yes, BSS too deserves praise. It will rate among her best songs.
I forgot to add that KB remade 'Apoorva Ragangal' in Hindi. (Ek Nayi Paheli?) Stg- Kamal, Hemamalini, Raaj Kumar and Padmini Kolhapure. The film and the songs sank quickly and quietly without a trace.

Saravanan,
1.If my memory from school days doesn't fail me, the song "Paramasivan kazhuthilirundhu paambu kettadhu..... Yaarum irukkum idaththil irundhu kondaal ellaam sowkyame..... adhil arththam ulladhu" in Sooriya kaanthi was sung by TMS,played by Kannadasan as Kavignar himself on stage/screen but the lyrics were by Vaali! I am writing this because, this irony (that Kannadasan wrote "Arthamulla indhu madham" but this song for him was penned by Vaali!)struck me even those days!
2.I fully agree with your views on 70's songs, because along with a few friends in college, I was also carried away by the false "show off" notion that any Hindi song is better than any Tamil song! (Some even had the audacity to write that Hindi is a musical language after all and the number of variations possible in the word "pyaar" are not at all possible in "kaadhal"!) It took me a few more years to mature and realise this ' silly one up manship' played among college mates and how my heart really longed for those songs in Tamil! Of course, the attachment grew stronger after I left Madras!
3.In "Sridevi varam ketkiral", the lines "thirumaalai naadi, manamaalai thedi" are sung differently the second time as follows: "thiru-maalai naadi, mana-maalai thedi"
4.In "Kelviyin naayagane", some lines on Kamal-Major are:
"Pazhani malaiyil ulla vel Muruga, sivan pallaandu aengi vittaan vaa Muruga.......Pakkaththiru Muruga...." when Kamal overcomes his reluctance, comes and sits next to Major and they clasp each other's hands!
5.One more immortal line in "Engirundho oru kural vandhathu....":
"Gangaiyile pudhu punal vandhathu, adhu endha megam thandha punalo?"
6.I think another song " Mazhaikkaala megam magaraajan vaazhga" by VJ (Film??? Actors??? Lyrics-Kavignar Kannadasan????-MD????) was penned with Perunthalaivar Kamaraj in mind, who passed away after a few months in Oct 1975!
7. On the whole, this site is making me get very 'senti' about my school/ college days! I fully agree that the Pre IR- 5 years and post IR -5 years (i.e., 1971-1981) were the best in TFM!

Some facts about VJ.
She sang the highest average of
solo songs in TFM. At least 60 to 70
percent of her songs are solos
