Dear fans of music
Of late, there have been many threads in this forum discussing about IR and his music in general. I don't deny that. But many have been just discussing his new albums, his new projects or in general very superficial which does not delve much into the analysis of his compositions. Maestro Ilayaraaja is a peerless composer and he is one of the very few to compose around 4000+ songs and compose music for around 800 movies. He writes music and his creations show his ingenuity. In this topic, I request the musically learned people to analyze some of his great works.
As a starter, please analyze the song "thendral vandhu theendum bodhu" from Avatharam. Please let us know the intricacies the Maestro has used to create this number. Since I am a lay man in music, I do not have much to say about this song, except that the song is in the lines of western classical music. The song is harmonious and great to listen to.
Needless to say, I believe this topic is never a waste of time. Not many have the opportunity/skill to analyze a great composer's music. So, on behalf of music lovers and fans I request people to participate here and analyze many of the gems given by Maestro.

rjay kalakkareega :-)
PG will have lots of stories to tell and will be invoking all the porAmai in us :-)
Re: WCM and rAja. rjay why are you not keen on WCM from rAja ? All the top WCM hits (by popular taste) are all melody/rhythm oriented. I think rAja can do WCM with a rich does of melody. After all WCM also needs some rescue :-(
Re: Folk. I definitely agree with you. If I am not mistaken it is already in the agenda of rAja's institute.
(No takers for the classification project ??)

Anand and Music Fan,
Thanks for reading the 'Thendral vandhu'
analysis, which I have not yet written.
Anand, your mocking of Chinnakkannan, is in
bad taste. Or you are listening to a remix version.
sad,
rjay

Kiru:
How about starting with counter-point songs of the Maestro?
Or please start with your first classification and we can go ahead with that.
What say all?

Sorry rjay!
ore confusion, the topic has grown two pages now and could not keep track of the postings. I was just reading the explanations you have given for the song in this page and it was very interesting to read.

Music fan:
i will try to as simple as i could.
Beat : talam, every score is supposed to have a talam or beat, common beats are 2/4 , 4/4, 6/8.
Bar : taking 4/4 each bar contains 4 counts.
1234 | 1234 |
consider these 1234 are quater notes (length or the duration the note is sustained)
we can also write |1 3 | 2 4| -- as half notes,
or just one whole note.
this is a bar.

I did'nt understand the mocking apart. Could explain that please.

The classification is a great idea. The
actual categories are also well thought out.
My suggestion is instead of trying to categorize
ALL songs. We should make a short list of 100-200
top hits of Raja. (I am sure such a list should
already be there somewhere in this forum and someone will find it). And try to categorize those
100.
When you see similar songs together, you begin
to see common ideas and style stands out.

I thought I have not heard any keyboard
or bass run pieces in the intro of the song.
Maybe I am mistaken, sorry. As I think, you
might have mentioned the santoor piece and
there is the bass during the pallavi.
Please dont take that to mind. In the TFM page,
I sometimes see mock praise, so I mistook.

Thanks for the help on beats and bars.
Rjay:
As a simple listener of music, I felt that the following songs were counterpoints. Correct me if I am wrong.
Adi aathadi - Kadalora kavidhaigal
Niram pirithu parthen - TIME
poongathave thaaL thiravai - Nizhalgal

Cha!, I missed out again on all the interesting discussions ;))
Rjay, fan and others pl. continue discussions like these.
We used to have a thread called 'Ssong discussion' and evertime it got revived from the archives it went right back to it in a few days. So I would want this thread to remain as active as possible.
In case u guys are planning a large scale analysis of IR songs we can ask bb to make this thread a permanent one. Actually many of the permanent threads have been sleeping for a while.
Also, I agree with Rjay that IR shouldnt justdo private WC albums etc. As his fan Iam still greedy for more albums from him. If not TFM, then MFM or HFM or whatever keeps himself inspired.
After all IR gave one of his all time best albums in Guru as late as 1997 when he was supposedly running empty on gas and was heavily uninspired. My only wish is that he rejects all these kasturiraja, rajkiran movies etc. and concentrate more on good projects. Kamal's aalavandar has music by shankar mahadevan. Ddunno why IRr was left out of this.
Finally, Iam ready tro contribute to the list of 100 songs if needed for discussion.

vijay, on a lighter vein, we can appreciate GURU a lot more whenever we get Kasturi or rajki or ramraj movies :-)

Sabesan,
I agree;) The point is if IR is able to impart his WC expertise into some of the filmi songs its better. The reach for filmi albums is much better than private albums. Many would have listened to edho megam in TN as it would hav ebeen played on radio in all the tea shops. But how many would have heard about HTNI or Nothing but wind except HCIRFS and selecteed few guys interested in WC.
Also private albums have a risk of not being released at all like the RPO that is yet to se the light of day. Iam want IR to stay on in TFM if not for listening to great WCM then atleast for denying good projects fom falling into the hands of Deva and others. Like the remake of Bharatham, a mallu movie based on classical music, is being handled by Deva of all people;((

On a still lighter vein..when people asked why I spent so much money on my stereo system when I listen mainly to Indian music, my response is I listen to rAjA's music and Classical music needs a good stereo syste !! I then play GURU and some other albums of rAjA :-)
rjay..I like the idea of taking a sample and then trying to classify it. I applaud the first volunteer..vijay..
This discussion here and in ARR thread has been much motivating and provide some escape in the context of the stinking stock market :-( and from the release time stress at work.

RajaG: Naanum urimaiyOdu solgirEn, If I am not going to write the experiences here, I am going to come out with a book. Thats all.
IR is in an industry that is inseparable from these things. I am writing this from an observer's point of view.
Also, Maestro has never entertained me in a talk that involves music! That could be because I am an ignoramus in music. Listen to what Maestro had to say:
"Yennudan isaiyilum, pala vishayangaLilum sari samamAga kaisErndhu nadappadhatku ingu yArumE illaiyE"
PG: Saar, isai sambandhappatta vishayam..kEtkalAmA?
IR: kELunga...
PG: thayakkamA irukku...isaiyil nAn oru poojyam...
IR: neenga mattumA? Naanum kooda oru poojyamdhAn...poojyamyendru ninaiththAldhaan, isai varum...
The objective is not just some close proximity with IR. The inference is IR is receptive, he is accessible. He wants all of us, youngsters to help him in one form or the other. We need a banner to get under and work that out. Call it RaajaNGAHM or IR fans association or whatever you feel like, the mission is to spread a word about his work....
yAn petra inbam peruga ivvaiyagam - thats it! (Sweet)nothing else.
I stayed in Madras for two months and spent most of the time with IR. I traveled with him to many places in Tamil Nadu...in short, I LIVED WITH HIM......
next: Kamal's invitation to IR to check out some technical issues in Hey Ram trailer.
only if you fans/friends wish to hear...pls let me know.

NejamE solren, its not my idea to write my experiences with IR here. I have been asked to do so, so that, people could get together and work for his music. Canvassing or whatever, the idea is to join forces...put the Indian composer's name in the front.
Just talking about his music here takes us somewhere? Please tell me. I have done this with many of my friends in the last four years!!
I will get in touch with you and thanks for the email id. I sure appreciate it.
