"NANDHAA" songs

The much awaited "NANDHAA" film songs (Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja, Direction : Bala) are being released today (21-10-2001). Kamal Hasan is releasing the first audio cassette and Bharathiraja is receiving it, at Hotel Connemara, Chennai.

The songs are totally fresh & different, and not the usual Yuvan's latino-type music. This album can easily be compared to some of the best of Ilayaraja when he was at his best.

Hear the songs and enjoy.

  First the positives - the album boasts very good recording and mixing. YSR has consistently given good mixes. He has avoided western influences in this album, like madhav and others have pointed out. IR has given two strong melodies just with his singing. Yuvan has also tried to write some bass lines like IR and not resort to the easy electronic drone in the background ambience thing, all the time.
  The negatives, that I would like to point out, are - in a desire to sound 'pleasant' or to please the audience I think Yuvan is giving the music low priority !!!. You know what I mean ?, the tune is predictable. Somehow mun paniyaa sounded like snEhithanE from ARR ..the two IR songs seem to be modelled after the two songs in sEthu. (compare ammaa song with varthai thavari vittai in sEthu ) In the engengo sellum song, I find IR's voice overshadowed by the instruments, however melodious they sound. YSR should concentrate on creating 'totally' new melodies. (Ofcourse, he is better than so many other MDs). I think he also should concentrate on making sure the lyrics really fit his notes. I find in mun paniyaa there is some rushed singing.
  
  Overall this is a good effort. Yuvan has been giving different albums all the time and so I think he will progress into a strong musician in the future. I want Yuvan to prove that to create new sound you dont have to literally change the sound. It is how you use the same traditional instruments in a novel way.

  IR's voice sucks on Nanda. his voice on the higher octaves make me want to cringe. when is he going to stop singing. boy !countless songs despoiled.
  
  To call IR's voice 'beautiful' is a travesty of great singers.

  Just shows the level of puerility on your part. Well, alright, IR's voice is mellifluous.
  "No one can ever bring life into a song like IR does". If eructations and cacophony are the norm of good singing ;yep IR's voice does bring life in the form of braying. as a matter of fact , it personifies braying.

  If you go acoording to rules and norms, I am sure you would agree that majority of singers have to be ignored. Physics of sound no matters for ears. Physics does not have any sense about "expression of feelings". IR's voice definitely get a pass here..If my ear can not sense that...stop listening...

  just listeneed to the songs..preety good...atleast YSR ia makinf giant strides forward...spb song was a spellbinder....so was IR'S renditions..i cannot say the same about rest of the album...its was pretty ordinary stuff..."ayiram " cud have been better ..."andal poem " is a mess..... overall its an album which shows ysr has moved away from his fusion funky stuffs....
  one more thing i dont get why IR is getting repetitive in singing these type of songs...we heard it in sethu and then in kutty and then in bharathi and now in nandhaa...if u ask people abot IR ...they are gonna say the guy who sings the sad songs in tamil movies...whats happening to his singing abilities ...i have no doubt that he can emote ..but for the guy who sang"sorkagamme endralum "..."enthu oruthara patham".." thendral vanthu".." das das".." poomalaiye tholsera"..."veetuku veetuku "...list goes on...it isnt fair on his part to churn out only sad melodies...he can do better..in fact IR is more versatile in such type of songs..i get the feeling that whenever u listen to sad songs by IR ..it all seems the same.. could we ever get renditions like "kathakelu kathakelu "from MMKR..those were the days!!!!

  callaspadeaspade is somewhat right. IRs voice is so terrible these days. His voice was real good a few years ago and it was good only for singing certain type of songs like folk, pathos etc. Only good thing about IR singing is, that his pronounciation is very good.

  CallASpadeASpade - not sure who u r..... but this time i agree with u..... yes, IRs voice is not good in the "amma" song in most of the places.... it suits at the beginning of the song very much.... but inside the para's - well, i really wish someone should have sung that part alone.... i really enjoyed the start of the song..... it really brings a lot of sorrow at the beginning, but half way thro, hmmm i don't want to say.... his voice was very very very good in SETHU songs, and in KUTTI song....... not in this..... well, all IMHO :-)....

  Many portions of nanda songs resemble and reminded me of some old tunes. In the 'mun paniye' song, the chorus interludes is similar to the song 'velli malare velli malare' by rahman.
  
  In the song 'Or 1000 yaanai', the 2-3 starting 'thaai vayithirl thalai keelaga…' resemble the lines 'vaan mazhai pol iravil varuvaan, in naan virumbum varaiyil..' in chandralekha song in thiruda thiruda.

  i am new to this forum. heard Nandha's songs and should say that it was a different kind of effort from YSR. It seems that each song has a theme in this movie. "Mun Paniya" by SPB is superb. Other songs are also ok

  apology accepted. Let me set the premise . I am an IR fan(atic) too but I draw the line when IR takes the mike. To define braying with respect to IR , i have to list a fusillade of songs that were just raped by him . But those would be my personal opinions and that could be biased . A few years ago, when "poonthottam" came out , it had a wonderful song "inia malarhal malarum". i think it was Anandha vikatan that actually came out with the criticism that IR should think twice before singing.
  
  Sure , IR's voice has been compatible in certain situations. In "avadhaaram", I don't think any one else would have been a better fit.
  
  As a music lover, don't tell me that it did not pain you to see IR sing "indha maan undhan sondha maan " from karagattakaran. the higher octaves were deplorable.
  
  Had u noticed my dissent , i had said that IR was poor in higher octaves. Not every one can conquer the higher octaves.
  
  My qualm is that IR gets carried away with himself and occassionally(more often nowadays) picks up a song and spoils it . The tune , unfortunately, turns out to be scintillating. And therein lies my frustration that IR does not recognize his limitations.
  
  Of course , I'd rather listen to IR than listen to the Hindi coterie that ARR puts forth. But i do not listenn to ARR anyway.

  Nanda and Kasi have very similar themes...Kasi is Vikram starrer and remake of Malayalam hit.In KASI A HARIJAN GIRL LOVES THE COMPLEXED HANICAPED MAN and in Nandha a Srilankan tamil refujee loves complexed Soorya...Both the films have Panjam Patini and Soha...back ground the chances of both films Bombing at box office is very much there as both are Deepavali releases So do not hail the music of this film more than it really deserves.IMHO....below average....Nandha...Album.
