Hi all,
I have learnt lots of Tamil words through tfm, but there are so many words that I still dont know the meaning of. I would love to improve my Tamil vocabulary, but resources are limited. I was wondering if we can have a thread that helps out in this regard. People post the words they dont understand and someone who knows responds with the answer. For this to succeed the old-timers have to get involved, bcos I dont know many younger guys who know much Tamil words :)
Ex.
1. samsaaram enbathu veenai..santhosham enbathu raagam.. xxx xxx illai
I used xxx because I dont even know what he was saying. was it "salanam galadhi illai"? What does that mean?
2. En mana vaanil siragai virikkum.. from Kasi. There is a line kalakalakala vena thulli kuthikkum sinnanchiru kalaiyey.. what does kalai mean?
3. Anjanam. What does it mean? (Used in various songs)
4. Uchi vaguntheduthu pichu poo vacha kili..What does this mean?
Please answer people!

Chella,
Just wanted to add my 2 cents to Raj's response. "thoondarathu" also means "provoking" - either by accident or with malicious intent.

Interpreter: Thanks for the addition. If it is a cinema song with a phrase 'aasaiyai thoondivittai', then it means rousing desire. If it is 'pagaiyai thoondivittai', then it means instigating enmity. Context plays a key role. I hope others add to what I said.

KP: I just listened to Tiruppalliyezhuchi/tiruvempavai by MLV (MIO). The phrase is 'kurukugal iyambina'. I have not listened to the song yuo gave yet.

KP: I found my Thiruvachakam book and the song where you found the phrase 'kurugukal iyambina'. That is the correct phrase. This is Tiruppalliyezhuchi for Lord Shiva. There is also Tiruppalliyezhuchi for Lord Vishnu by Azhvaars. The one you have by MS is actually a translation of the Sanskrit Suprabhatam, 'Kausalya suprajaa Raama...' She has sung both Sanskrit and Tamil versions. Try MIO.

raj and kp: I think "kurugaL" means birds..and iyambina means "said".In this context, it means the singing of birds.

KP,
"kurugu" has multiple meanings, a considerable number of them being different kinds of birds such as kOzhi, nArai, nIrpparavai, anRil, and kokku. In addition it also has the poththAm podhu meaning of paRavai. So, we are safe in assuming that "kurugugaL" means "birds", as Raj said :)

'Jagam pugazhum punya kadhai' has some complex words(sorry i dont have a link for this song)
'iga pala sugamellaam adaindhidalaame indha kadhai ketkum ellorume'
What is igapala?
'sanjalam illaamal anjana vannanum'
anjana vannan-is it blue coloured?
'kodiyavaL sUrpanagai raamabiraan meedhu maiyal koNdaaL'
maiyal..whats the exact meaning? desire/lust?
'aazhiye thaandi ilangai sendra Hanumaan'
what is aazhi?Ocean?

on: Thu Jun 19 08:20:13 EDT 2003
KP: You are right about 'emperuman' and 'perumal'.
You probably heard the song 'Pitha piraisoodi perumane arulaala' in Thevaram.
It is 'iga param'. 'Ikam' is this world and 'param' is the other world (heaven).
'anajana vannan' means blue colored or dark colored. Rama is called 'anjana vannan'.
In the ocntext you gave lust is approppriate.
It is used for kaadhal also. Aazhi is sea or ocean.

Raj thanks for the immediate response. You guys are doing a great service..i had difficulty remembering these lines because of these words. Now i know the meaning, its easy to store in the memory:)
Here comes the next.
In the song 'aathangara marame'(kizhakku cheemaiyile)
The first pallavi has these lines
maamanae unna thaangaama(kaanamaa?)
ottiyil soarum pongaama(undhaama?)
paavi naan paruththi naaraap poanaenae
kaagamthaan kaththip poanaalum kadhavudhaan saththampoattaalum
What is she saying? Though i slightly understand the first 2 lines, i dont get the kaagam and kadhavu.
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Thu Jun 19 09:37:20 EDT 2003
KP: kaagam is crow (kaakkai). Kadhavu is door.
I am not familiar with the song. I will respond after listening. It is probably 'paruthi nadapponene' meaning 'I went to plant cotton'.nadu means plant and paruthi is cotton. Looks like she neglected to care for her 'maaman' with 'soru' (rice) and went to work.
- From: KP (@ 161.150.2.25)

Raj i know what kaagam and kadhavu are but i dont understand their usage in this context.

KP: Dhool has the song, but would not play. I looked at the lyrics. It is 'paruthi naaraap ponene' Naaru is fiber. She is sneaking out to see him ignoring the noise from the hinges of the door when she opens it and the noise made by the crows when they see people. 'Naarap ponen' means that she has become lean because she misses him.
Sorry for the wrong interpretation earlier. The song is not available in MIO.

it is Maamane unna kaangama( means Paarkama without Seeeing)
othyail sorum unnama (i couldnt Eat)
paavi naan paruthi naara ponene(without use..)
kaagam than kathi ponalum Kadhavu than Satham potalum ( when Crow makes sound there's a convention that relative is coming )
she means that..
also the door Noise.
so she feels he's coming..
A nice Song
thanks KP

KP: I looked at the lyrics again. Looks like they are singing from two different places. If that is true then the meaning changes. She is longing for him. That matches what raj says. I have not seen the movie. In fact, I have not seen any of the recent movies.
Thanks raj. I forgot the belief about crows.

HI Raj, KP, Interpreter
You guys are doing a great job ! And I especially liked your crow interpretation.
About 'thoondarathu' - it was 'kaadhal thoondidu'. But I get the meaning.
In Kandukondain 'sandhanath thenRalai jannalgaL dhaNdiththal niyaayamaa', what is 'dhaNdiththal'?
Same song - vidiyal vandha pinnaalum vidiyaadha iravu edhu
poovaasam veesum undhan koondhaladi
ivvulagam iruNda pinnum iruLaadha baagam edhu
kadhir vandhu paayum undhan kaNgaLadi
pala ulaga azhagigaL koodi un paadham kazhuvalaam vaadi
en thaLir malarae innum thayakkamenna
ennaip puriyaadhaa idhu vaazhvaa saavaa
I get the general idea of the pallavi, but what do these words mean specifically - iravu, koondhal, iruL, kadhir.

'macha machiniye' (Star) - does it refer to the 'machi' slang of Madras, or does it have some other meaning? I couldnt find the relation between this and the subsequet lines as I didnt get the meaning of this.
What is 'mannan'?
Is 'poruppu' responsibility?
Un pugazhukku vaan poruppu, porumaikku man porruppu
Un naLavvukku silai poruppu- what is pugazh, vaan, man, naLavu, silai? [Aalavandaan]. By the way, what does 'Aalavandaan' mean? And what is 'Urave' and 'tinavu'? (same song)
OK - I stop here for now.

Chella: 'dhandithal' means punished. 'iravu' means night. 'koondhal' is hair/lock . 'irul' means darkness. 'kadhir' is ray of light in this context. It can also be interpreted as bright. Remember the song by Bharatiyar - OLi padaitha kanninay Vaa Vaa Vaa? OLi is light.
Here dhandithal probably alludes to closing the window for the sandalwood breeze. Thanks for the compliment. This is more of a hobby for me.

on: Thu Jun 19 15:09:11 EDT 2003
Chella: Machini is sister-in-law or wife's sister. I am not familiar with machi of Madras. pugazh is fame or praise. man is earth or ground(transliteration?). I think it is un + aLavukku? ALavu means measure or size. uravu is relationship. tinavu is itch. Mannan is king. Poruppu is responsibility as you said. Looks like he is using 'poruppu' as limit. The first line should be interpreted as 'sky (vaan) is the limit for your fame'. I will listen to the song if I can find and add/clarify.

Chella: I listened one song. Macha here is macham meaning mole. Obviously she has a mole visible. ALavandhan literally means one who came to rule. ALa = to rule. vandhan =one who came. I will listen to the other song and post

Chella,
"poruppu" strictly means responsibility. However, the lyricist (who else, Vairamuthu) has used the word quite creatively here in slightly different ways to convey admirable/desirable qualities in the hero and heroine. He uses it in the first line "un pugazhukku vaan poruppu", he means that the attributes of the hero's fame have been given to him by the sky - the attributes of his fame being the height (as in "peak of fame"), the vastness, and visibility from everywhere. He uses it quite the same way when he says "poRumaikku maN poruppu" (The Earth is traditionally cited for its patience in supporting all the creatures, taking humankind's inconsiderate actions in its stride, and always being there no matter what.) He uses it the same way when he says "un aLavukku silai poruppu" to convey that she is curvaceous and proportionate, like a silai made according to the rules (siRpa sAsthram).
When he says "un azhagukku thaai poruppu, aRivukku thamizh poruppu", he uses poruppu differently - that she inherited her beauty from her mother and got her intelligence from learning thamizh or because of the thamizh flowing in her blood (hey, we are all intelligent too!)
When he says "un udhadu enathu poruppu", he means "your lips will be under my tender care"! When he says "un kuzhandhaikku nAn poruppu" he means "I will take up the responsibility of giving you a child."
He also uses the age old (but eternally interesting) point of disagreement about the man earning and the woman spending, in a light vein in the lines "en varavukku nI poruppu, un selavukku nAn poruppu".
A very entertaining and content-heavy song from him in the recent past. Has his stamp all over it (and yes, it has the word "vErvai" too!)

K: It is 'yadhu vamsa veeranukku', the hero of yadhu tribe/community or yadhukulam. kamba naadan literally one who is from Kamban's country. There may be other interpretations. Let me listen to the song first.
