FIRSTLY,the south film industry have to stop the heroines that are being imported from bollywood.we have better actressses here who could perform well.the southern awards shows should not play hindi music as they do this every year but the so called "bollywood" award show had never and will never play a south indian music in their awards shows because they just look down on us.so it is also southern film industry mistake for forgetting our own peoples talent.SO ITS HIGH TIME WE REALISE THIZ!

SPB is a great singer..only thing is that the bass
in his voice differenciate him with other singers.
However,I would say that is what people admired in him...A good way of singing.Eventhough he doesn't have much songs nowadays but I wish he comes back with the bang.Good luck SPB

well said, Charan, that was the message I was trying to put across, but some idiots here started silly statements about that, u r right SPB's bass is what differenciate him from the rest singers in TFM.

The reason SPB hasn't succeeded in hindi is his pronounced South accent. THis worked for EK Duje because the character was a Tamilian. But in the regular hindi songs, that accent stands out negatively.
I think SPB is miles ahead of anyone around in any language. Honestly I hope he doesn't succeed in Hindi so that we get to hear more of him. Lets be more possessive & treasure our belonging.
Anu Malik doesn't need SPB to sing his crap. He anyway copies ARR & we can hear SPB sing the original.

Hi Sreeni;
yah, I agree withn u , SPB hindi accent was not indeed very good, but who cares about accent, when he got the perfect voice.
Did u know that Deva nearly had a heart attack, when he found out that Anu malik was coming south?, he he
Don't u think that Anu & Deva would make perfect copy cats.

I think accent is quite important. Don;t we get pissed off listening to the Tamil channel DJs talking Tamil with an accent ?
My North Indian colleagues are irritated with SPB singing Hindi songs purely because of the accent.
I think they have a point.
By the way, which moron Director is calling Anu Mailk here ? That man's attitude is as intolerable as his music. I saw him give an interview about how he composed 'tu tu tu tara' when it was a ditto of IR's 'Rakamma ' in Dalapati . He said the tune hit is toe & travelled through the body to his brain. He said his Baazigar music will last for 250 years

Yah, I agree with u about anu malik copying IR's "rakkamma kaiyathatu", from "thalapathy", he copied from SDB, RDB, Ram laxman, Salil Chaudry, IR, ARR, MSV, KVM, ..etc, but isn't that what our deva is doing now, any way lets stick to the topic.

Deva + ATTITUDE = Anu Malik.
Anyway, if SPB doesn't sing in Hindi, it is their loss. Not ours.

1 reason for SPB not singing a lot in Hindi.....
He pronounces r as RRRRR .
I mean he pronounces
'fir se' as
"fiRRRRRRR se"..

The reason SPB is so good is that he enjoys what he sings & puts a lot of 'Bhavam' in to his singing. I don't know if he understands Hindi & so his biggest asset may be missing in Hindi. I can't speak Hindi & so I am guessing here.

Anu malik copies from all possible Indian MDs..
Deva shows his superiority by lifting English numbers.
no modifications, no adjustments, no nothing.
Straight lifts.
BTW, the moment u hear an English song blasting thru Deva's house, u can be sure that tune's in his next movie. hee hee

Why is making it in Bollywood such a great deal?? Bollywood is no sign of ARTISTIC excellence, is it??
Most Bollywood singers these days are making a name for themselves in Tamil/Telegu singing. Why not ask the Southern MDs why they are not utilising SOUTHERN singers (SPB included) for their new movies?
Bollywood may have neglected/overlooked/dismissed fine singers. But Kollywood is going the same way these days!!

yeah, I agree with u, unfortunately kollywood is also doing the same thing of ignoring fine artists like SPB, instead nasal singers like Udit, Kumar, Sonu, Hariharan, Shanker are being employed by Kollywood.
Only god can save India!

Raghu - and none of the singers in your list speak/sing "good" tamizh! (A few posts above SPB was being criticised for his "RRRR" and his Southern Accent...Well, guys - how do the Sonus, Udits, Hariharans fare in their Tamizh accent...any opinions?)
Deewani Deewana by SPB from Teri Bahon Mein (music Bhappi Lahiri) is a beautifully rendered, haunting solo.

Looks like most people on this thread are missing the woods for the trees!
I believe that SPB being rejected in the north has nothing to do with his voice or his pronunciation. If you have been a frequent hindi song listener over the years you will appreciate the wide range of difference in pronunciation even amongst the hindi singers.
There is much more to it than meets the eye!
I am not saying that SPB's hindi pronunciation is perfect. I am trying to make a different point alltogether. Lets look at it realistically...!

Teri Bahon Mein had Ayesha Dutt aka Mrs. Jackie Shroff and Mahnish Bhal (Nutan's son). The movie was a (bad) remake of Blue Lagoon!!

While you are right that there are other "invisible" factors that make or unmake a career in Bollywood - the PR machine (by the competition) usually puts out stories about "Accent" "Pronunciation" and "Lack of Expression" - for the "Southies" to accept the rejection of their singing talent (that's why I cross-referenced it with a direction to another post above that specifically mentioned this so-called "flaw" in SPB's Hindi singing.) When was the last time you saw/read/heard "Southies" (from within the TFM industry) dismissing singers from Bollywood (who are creeping out of the Tamizh woodwork like there is no tomorrow!) using similar criteria? I see more and more albums in Tamizh featuring Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, and Sadhana Sargam. Their "accent" (not their voices) doesn't sound "native" to my ears. Does it to yours?
What makes these singers marketable in the south - and SPB (who is infinitely superior in many ways to those listed above) less marketable in the North?
Realistically, why do you think that is so?

Thanks for your response.
Well, at the end of the day its all down to PR/marketing isn't it? In the wider spectrum we could discuss in length about the historical/political/...... domination of north over south. Sincerely, I dare not venture into that kind of a discussion.........& recently I started a thread called unity in diversity.

Arun:
I can understand your reservation with (not) addressing the North/South (Indian) hegemonies and hypocrisies in such fora. While it may be a worthy topic to discuss and gain some insights into these historic biases/divisions - you are right, this is not a fora for that.
Unity in Diversity sounds to my ears (nothing personal) as a worn cliche. And even if that is the philosophy of your other "thread" - it still begs the question - whose unity? whose diversity? and at whose cost?

also about SPB being superior to Hariharan - well I dont know about TFM in general. But I have heard some adorable semiclassical Carnatic renditions by Hariharan with his mother Alamelu. Besides this I think Hariharan has worked with Mehndi Hassan, rais Khan, Zakit hussain.
For HFM, Hariharan IMHO >>>>>>> SPB.
For tFM, maybe SPB >>>>>>>>>>>> HH.
Overall, even I feel that SPB is the most versatile male singer in India.
- From: AVR (@ 143.127.3.10)
on: Wed Jan 30 23:34:51 EST 2002
BTW - I have many reservations about SPB getting NA for the ek duuje ke liye song which he practically murdered with his accent.
Now look here - i agree he is the best singer but his voice does NOT suit Hindi songs at all. He makes a mess of them all. Thats the reason he is not successful in Bollywood. (I admire SPB for all his southern songs and he is above Rafi for classical songs IMO)
Naaz - about Northies not accepting southern singers - Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan are all South Indians, right??
ARR (and he is an awful singer) is south Indian???
Mahalaxmi Aiyyar too sings often in Marathi films and Tv serials, right??
All these people sound NATIVE while singing - thats why. SPB doesnt.

AVR,
Just so that you are aware of the facts. Kavitha, Hari, and Shanker have spent all their formative years in Bombay/Western India. I can definitely say Kavitha, for one, is more comfortable speaking Hindi than thamizh. So it is natural that these singers have been recognized in the North, while I still contend less than they deserve (only for Shankar and Hari, I might add).
ARR gets to sing only when he composes, and only rarely. In any case, acceptance or rejection of ARR's singing is not a big deal.
My contention is, I don't give a rat's as* if SPB is recognized in the North for his Hindi playback singing. Just spare me from Udit, Suckwinder, Sadhana,.......OR if you must have them, insist that they spend a couple of days merely on the pronunciation of the words. And as to local "murderers" like YSR, ARR, Suresh Peters......la, La, zha, na, Na, idhellaam sariyaa uchcharikkalainnaa naakkula soodu pOttuduvOmnu miratti vaikkaNUm :-)
