A R Rahman will score for Swades
The script is ready. So is the leading man Shah Rukh Khan. Ashutosh
Gowariker is all set to go on the floors in August. But, "apart from
Shah Rukh Khan, the only other principal name I have finalised for
the film is A R Rahman, who will score the music again for me after
Lagaan."
Gowariker is looking for a new face for his leading lady.

It looks like Rahman has set tunes for five songs in Arjun's
Parasuram and they are shooting a song right now.

Pop Stop
- Business India, January 20, 2003
Pop music maestro A.R.Rahman is slated to give his first live concert in India on 1 February at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium. Rahman has given concerts abroad but never in India because of "technical" issues. He also says he has learnt from his forays on the London stage and now feels able to manage shows of his own. Rahman's Unity of Light concerts are expected to swing through 11 countries through the rest of the year. Rahman is also treading on thin-ice with proposed reinterpretations of Rabindranath Tagore. "Javed Akhtar has translated and I am doing the arrangement of some Rabindra Sangeet, which will also be used in the film Netaji, " he says. Rahman has roped in some of the biggest playback singers in Bollywood to render his compositions.

MUMBAI: The Mani Ratnam film Kannaththil Muththamittaal, featuring
Madhavan and Simran, has been received extremely well at the
prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival held at
California recently.
The Madras Talkies production was placed third in the top 10
audience favourites. It is a proud moment for Tamil cinema with the
film being appreciated among 200 films from all over the world.

Two mesmerizing musicals were the two best films of 2002 -- and I
can't tell you how strange and surprising it feels to declare that
since I'm not a big fan of musicals.
But for days, even weeks, after seeing these two pictures, I couldn't
get their infectious songs out of my head (I don't advise
absentmindedly singing a song called "They Both Reached For the Gun"
while sitting in an airport at Christmas). Nor could the film buff in
me shake the wildly entertaining stories, the charismatic
performances, the fantastic photography and about a thousand other
exquisite details that made both movies completely unforgettable.
One of them is "Chicago," an ingeniously cinematic adaptation of the
jazz-fueled Broadway hit about murderous vaudeville vixens, played by
Catherine Zeta-Jones and the magnificent Renée Zellweger in a career-
best performance. We'll get to that one in a minute.
The other is called "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time In India," and it
couldn't be more different. It's a nearly four-hour long
epic "Bollywood" extravaganza about rain-starved Indian peasant
farmers in 1893 challenging their cruel colonial British overlords to
a winner-take-all cricket match that will determine if the farmers
will have their taxes waived for the next three year -- or tripled.
It sounds ridiculous, I know. But the prolific Indian film industry
has been cranking out pictures in this vein for years. They know what
they're doing and this fabulous, whimsical, Oscar-nominated feel-good
delight is the culmination of every ambitious, romantic, cinematic
and melodious instinct of showmanship the country's studios have ever
mustered.
However, "Lagaan" (now available on DVD -- widescreen is a must) can
be only a footnote to this list because, as you might have guessed
from the Oscar mention above, was officially released in 2001,
although it didn't reach San Francisco until May of 2002.

03.A.8. A.R. Rahman - India
The predominance of film music in India is well known. A.R. Rahman
is the reigning heavyweight is this insanely popular genre. When a
film is hot in India, so is the soundtrack. Taal was the most popular
film when we arrived in India and the selected cut is taken from its
soundtrack.

"The refusal of key Indian filmmakers to rally behind Mehta and
defend freedom of expression was another crucial factor. With the
notable exception of Aparna Sen, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and one or
two others, most Indian filmmakers ignored her plight. The most
deafening silence came from Bollywood, Bombay's multi-billion dollar
film industry, where only two actors and the composer A.R. Rahman
bothered to contact Mehta and offer their solidarity. The rest of
Bollywood, to its eternal shame, said and did nothing."

Outlook in its usual adimedaavi thanam
------------------------------------------
Global Notes
Ten years in mainstream cinema, and A.R. Rahman now thinks film music in India has reached a dead-end. An excuse for giving such a big dud in his last score for Kaadal Virus? Whatever, he'll soon be on a 10-concert world tour, called Unity of Light Show. And the cause? Of course, he has one-to raise money for cancer cure. How predictable, like our music.

While researching for the film, Benegal got a lot of help from the Netaji Research Bureau in Kolkata and Bose's family. The script is by Shama Zaidi and Atul Tiwari while A.R. Rahman will set Javed Akhtar's lyrics to music. After shooting for three weeks in Kolkata, the team will move on to Myanmar, Malaysia, Germany and Uzbekistan. Shooting will wrap up by July and the film will be out to coincide with Bose's birthday in 2004. Ideal, when you consider that this is Benegal's "celluloid homage" to the great hero.

From interview with Singer Srinivas in today's The Hindu 'friday
review'.
The road to success was not always smooth for this singer.
"There was a monopoly of 'voice'. Only a few chosen remained at
the top rung for many years together. No new singer or musician
was given a chance. In 1992, I saw Mani Ratnam's 'Roja' and made
up my mind to meet A.R.Rahman," says Srinivas.
"While I was in Chennai, I made futile attempts to meet
Ilaiyaraja. Getting in touch with Rahman was much easier. Rahman
is a godsend to the music industry. Had it not been for him, you
would never have heard many of us ever sing for films," adds
Srinivas.
"Working for Rahman has always been a truly enriching
experience. Hariharan was initially chosen to sing 'Minsara
Poove', in Rajnikanth's 'Padaiyappa', but he was not in Chennai
when Rajni wanted to hear the track. So I filled in. Rahman told
me, 'Remember you're singinf for Rajni, so the style and voice
tenor has to suit his image'. And when Hariharan came back, it was
recorded in his voice but somehow Rajni seemed to prefer the track
I'd sung earlier. Eventually I won the Tamil Nadu State award for
this song."
