Alka Yagnik is a good singer who has been singing in Hindi, Bengali and Marathi films from the late 1980's. She has a sweet and a melodious voice and has sung a minimum of 40 songs for A R Rahman in Hindi (solo and duets).
Some of the songs she has sung for A R Rahman are:
Taal se Taal... from Taal
Oh Rey Chhori... from Lagaan
Maahive... from The Legend of Bhagat Singh
Aaj Mein Gavoon... from Little John for Praveen Mani (the one Sujatha sang in Tamil. (Just listed out A R Rahman and Praveen Mani, so that south indians identify with the songs, that's all).
And many many more...
She has sung atleast 800 songs in her career so far and is the favourite of many music directors in Bollywood and has a lot of fans all over. If you listen to a sweet melodious Hindi female voice, most of the time it must be singer Alka Yagnik. But somehow she has not sung a single Tamil, Telugu song or in any south indian language, for reasons best known to her.
Can we discuss if she can be used by our Tamil music directors; like they have tried Sadhana Sargam, Kavitha Poudwal, Latha Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Anuradha Poudwal? I feel she must have been given offers in the south, but she must be refusing them.
For the heavens sake, people who are decent and have heard Alka-ji's voice take part in this thread and discuss. NO filthy remarks. By making indecent remarks you are insulting a great singer (whoever it may be..). These people are who have such a talent which we don't posses. So healthy comments please.

I am giving some details on Alka Yagnik which I got in some website.
Alka Yagnik -Winner of 4 Best Female Playback Singer, Filmfare Awards
For the past decade or two, Alka Yagnik, has reigned supreme in the world of playback singing in India. The Ek Do Teen girl has been pushed even further into the limelight since the nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar, took a partial break from singing. Being the premier female playback singer in India today, Alka has achieved what few can hope to do.
Starting her career with the song "Tere Angne Mein", Alka Yagnik really got moving with "Ek Do Teen". With this hit song from "Tezaab", Alka has been climbing the ladder of fame consistently. Since Lata and Asha had become voices of yesteryears, the top spot was up for the grabs. Alka Yagnik came to the party at the right time and overshadowed few close competitors. Alka had hits after hits, such as, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (Gazab Ka Hai Din), Akele Hum Akele Tum (Raja Ko Rani Se), Deewana (Aisi Deewangee), Baazigar (Baazigar O Baazigar), Karan Arjun (Jaati Hoon Main), Criminal (Tu Mile), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (Ghunghat), Khamoshi (Bahon Ke Darmiyan), Raja Hindustani (Pardesi Pardesi), Taal (Taal Se Taal), Refugee (Panchi Nadiya and many more.
Born and brought up in Calcutta, Alka Yagnik came to Bombay almost two decades ago and ever since she has become an inseparable part of the film industry. In her short career, she has had the privilege of walking away with three Filmfare awards and two National awards. Born to a lady who happens to be a classical singer herself, music was in her blood.
She started singing Bhajans for the Calcutta Radio, at the tender age of six. According to her, singing was just a hobby initially but as success and popularity came along, she started taking it up seriously as a profession.
Alka Yagnik has been trying her hands in other things such as entering the world of Indi-Pop where she has cut an album with Javed Akhtar, "tum yaad aaye", and that too with great success.
Married happily to a successful US based guy, Alka enjoys her family life and holidays are reserved for the closed ones. Getting up early in the morning, exercising and getting her daughter ready for school, are a few things that show that Alka is a family person.
We hope that Alka continues to rise in her field of work and keeps her listeners enthralled by her enchanting voice. We wish her best of luck for the future and things to come.
Alka Yagnik is a bollywood singer who sings hindi music for hindi Bollywood films Alka Yagnik provides great entertainment to Indian entertainment industry.

i do agree that alka has a good voice and she is very good in romantic situation ,however i think that music is not only about love song..it is also about "taaL" just compare the song in devdas...not easy to forget...the way of singing is so good...that kavita krishnamurty shows that she is the only one who uses the real singing techniques...i use to like alka's songs in the early 1990's ...but now we are all tired of her when she works with anu malik and nadeem sharvan.....they are krap..we dont want then...alka has one way of singing ..give her devdas ..she will cry...but give that to lataji she will sing without any problem...so u people think well before u speak alka is good just in love mood but kavita k she is actually the one who can sing nearly anything...just as lataji
concerning alka i dont blame her as what she is given she takes but she need a change to survivre in the future..pls do note that kavita k has won 4 filmfare awards

She must be demanding more dhuttu to record a song at Chennai/to sing in Tamil So our MDs must not have felt the need to bring her here when there are so many singers here.

Enough is enough I am sick and tired of HIndi actresses and singers coming to dominate tamil. I have admiration for Bharathiraja who forces all Hindi actors and singers to converse in Tamil. What happened to the great like Jesudoss , SBP , CHitra why where they not given exposure in the north although they did so well

Alka hasn't sung 40 songs for Rehman, i am quite sure about it, the numbers are inflated there.
Kavitha krishnamurthy has a fantastic voice, Katre en vasal vanthai was very good.
Hope to see her in TFM often.

Tamil audiences have a mentality to adapt hindi singers with their hindi accent in tamil thats not the case in hindi.
Regarding Yesudas he recored Oh bhavre for Rehman in Daud but the accent was so like Malyalam/Tamil for that matter, hence audiences didn't like it.

Wat's wrong with Swarnalatha, Anuradha Sriram, Harini, Chitra Sivaraman, Mahalaksmi Iyer, Mathanggi, Chinmayi. Why do we need singer from north?

The problem with the people you mentioned is that their Tamil pronounciation is correct. That is why we need singers from the North!
