TFM really took a turn with the arrival of this duo to the field. While TFM has been in existence before Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, it is after their debut that TFM really kicked off.
Songs pre-VR suffered an early death even by the 60s, whereas VR songs are most popular even today, some 40 years later.
Added to their success story is the fact that nearly ALL their songs became popular and still remain so. This is no mean achievement with no other MD having ever reached their success rate.
Let us use this thread to recollect, remininse and celebrate this great duo and their contributions to TFM.
Hope to get interesting quips from knowledgeable people like Manisegaran, Sathya Keerthi, Saravanan, Uthaya, OISG etc etc.

OISG- Thanks for the deatiled response.
SL- Oh yes, Maargazhi paniyil is a beautiful song indeed. How romantic does SPB sound- kaarkuzhal kadalil, kani idhazh parugi, kaadhalai valarthen- isaippaadi-- and how he repeats 'isaippaadi' twice- how dreamy he sounds!
'Vaanathil aayiram thaaragai pookkal vedikkai paarkayile, gaanathil naangal kalandhirundhom, ini verenna vaazhkkayile, verenna vaazhkkayiley'-
these lines are so caressingly sung.
And then what follows is pure enchantment: 'Maan oru kannil meen oru kannil neendhi vara, mangani thannai poonkodi ondru yendhi vara--' I could go on about this song (I am not sure about the lyrics), but this the stuff dreams are made of!
Thanks SL, for reminding me of this song!

Sriram Lakshman:
thedi varum deiva sugam is indeed a great song. In the song the fast unconventional beats are special and come dangerously close (but never actually do) to going 'out of phase' with the tune. MSV must have put in a lot of effort in getting that song recorded.

Is Oru aalyamagum mangai manthu in Gowri Manohari?
Also the link and your views on "Ketathellam Naan tharuven" from "thikku theiryatha Kaatil".Prob around 1970s MSV moved to songs with more core Carnatic overtones with western rhythms.AFAI can recollect before 1970s "Muthukallo Kangal" in Brindavana saranga comes with a western Mambo rhythm."I will song for you" in absolute Karaharapriya with western beats around 1973.
Also noticed the special ambience effect in "Sangamam"-Thannathaniyaga" by TKR.MSV adopted this style only in Amarakaviyam -Selvame ..in the charanams.

OISG, maybe charukesi, it's grihabedam too. I have had the same confusion with 'malarE kurunji malarE'. The tune has GM written all over it in certain places and charukesi in some. Only MSV could answer the question :). 'kEttathellAm...' is a superb number....lot's of variations in several parts of the tune, just a wee bit intricate and this facet was to become a very important feature of his compositions. The tune has a 'saranga-ish' feel to it but not saranga :). I remember a classical sitar piece being placed in the interlude only for the charanam to revert to the raggae beat. Interestingly enough, the second stanza is more Indianised because tabla makes its entry. 'kAthal kAthal endru pEsa' in Dharmavathy is a classy composition. The tune is distinctly 'classical light' but the flute interludes are neither Indian nor Western, belonging to a genre that's its own. Another tune set to a raggae beat. The 'classical'ness returns at the end of the stanza. The present day composers could do well to listen to such numbers and learn what composition is all about. Did you give 'thEdi varum' a hear ?

I am not able to get the Dhool.com songs as it continues to show a runtime error.I am trying to get the song from my friends here.
About the song "Kathal Raajiyam enadhu" from "Mannvan Vandhanadi" -a similar feel like "Kettathellam"
Some inputs on SMS influence on MSV-TKR,MSV,TKR music is required.I feel SMS s Manippu has a more TKR feel. Also the CRS style in them..

Kettadhellam Naan Tharuven is a great tune - is it available anywhere on the web? (havent heard this for a long time)
Also is Yaarum Illai Ingey Idam Idam.. (PS nd SBP) (not sure of the movie) from the same period?
SBP and PS under MSV have sung some nice duets (One of my favourites is Kaadhal Vilayada and Odam Kadal from Kanmani Raja)
These songs had a nice positive feel and SBP sounds so different and young..
Just curious what OISG stands for :-) and who is the person behind this handle.

I wrote about S G R M pattern - I mentioned "Ore padal" from "Engiruntho Vanthal".Can you get some more S G R M songs from MSV.

Yarumillai from "Panathukkaga".MSV has this sudden and unusual pallavis ala "Kadhal Vilayada" which starts more like a charanam
"Ange Varuvathu yaro"
"Maranthey pochu"

Another, somewhat unusual SP-PS number is :"Malligai Poo Vaangi Vanden" from Paal Kudam (?).

Paal kudam starred by the star-pair AVM Rajan and Pushpalatha (1969). I guess CL Aanandan also acted in that movie.
Malligai poo vaangi vandhen, one of the early songs of SPB has his tender voice which can hear in "angam pudhu vidham" from Veettukku veedu with LRE, MandaveLiyile from Karunthel Kannayiram with Manorama, YaarOdum pesa koodadhu from Kaviya thalaivi with LRE, Thoduvadhenna thendralO from Sabadam etc etc... It will have the feminine shade also when he say "ha.." :-)
Reg the Malligai poo, PS starts with Anbu nirai kaadhaliye azhagu malar poongodiye.. in a very low pitched kisikisu voice and goes up after the bit gets over... superb rendition :-)

Subbu: Thanks for the note on "Malligai Poo". I was trying to remember the tune for the charanam
and your lines "Anbu Nirai.." immediately brought
it to light.
Another early SPB LRE song: Marande Pochu from Atthaiya Maamiya(?).

RR, yes, Marandhe Pochu is from Athaiya Mamiya.
Btw, the Kaviyathalaivi SPB-LRE duet is 'Aarambam indre aagattum'. 'Yaarodum pesakkodaathu' is a PBS-LRE duet from Ooty Varai Uravu (I think the song was not there in the film). Both pallavis sound similar, though!

Saravanan, You are right on dot as usual. "Yarodum" is from OVU. Interestingly, there was a program in AIR once about songs that did not appear in the movie. Many were MSV/TKR
and all of them were excellent songs: Thendral Varum (Paalum Pazhamum); Yaarodum(OVU);Nalvaazhvu
Veettukku Veedu); Varalakshmi (Bagyalakshmi) and the masterpiece Mahaarajan (Karnan). And yes, Yaarodum and Aarambam are very similar tunes atleast in the pallavi. Speaking of Kaaviya Talaivi, there is very nice song sung by MSV
(Neraana Nedunchalai)-very apt lyrics and music. I have not found this song mentioned in any of the TFM threads

another early SPB PS duet is " unnai thotta katru vandhu" from navagraham. Thangaikka too had a SPB song. I don't remember the songnow.

vengayam, "Unnai thotta" was an excellent duet, but pained the shoot team headed by KB.
One of the few songs, where SPB just did only humming. Here, his tender and feminine shaded voice made the song so sexy. As usual, PS mayakkified :-)
Some more on Navagraham:
1. KB narrated his experince of directing the film Navagraham for around 8 weeks in Kumudham weekly mag, while the shoot was on. He mentioned that the lines of "un paadham thotta alaigaL en paadham thottadhu...nam iruvaraiyum ondru serkka paalam ittadhu" in beach. He waited for one "alai" to Lakshmi's feet and then reach Sivakumar legs too. Thus, KB with unusual imagination, wanted to show the "paalam" made of Alai. But they waited for hour and every take, there will be some mistake or the "alai" played the villain touching only Lakshmi and not Sivakumar. KB's narration was very enjoyable indeed !!!
2. While the cast was being decided, Manorama wanted to play the role of "Akilandam" an she was really waiting for the hit. But it rumor floated that Nagesh interferred and recommended Ragini (Padmini's sister) to play the role. KB also convinced, it seems, thereby the split (Kaa vittachu) between Nagesh and Manorama began. Manorama said that she will act with as "Jodi" in any more new films and till date she keeps up her words :-((
But to me, I really felt the absence of Manorama in that film, when I watched.
3. Besides, PS, AL Raghavan and SPB as playback, there were songs (dialogue-ful) sung by the actors/actresses incl, Lakshmi, Muthuraman, Ragini, G Sakunthala, V. Gopalakrishnan, Major and other periya pattaLam :-)
Vengayam, SPB did not sing in Thangaikkaga (you mean this film, right?). Hope am not incorrect. The songs that I remember in 'T' are Thaayin mugam ingu nizhaladudhu (PS), Ethayum thaanguven (TMS), VeLLikizhamai rathiri neram calcutthavil nadandadhu ondru (LRE), one female duet for V.Nirmala and her friends (PS+SJ??), Angamuththu (ALR)

Read it as "Manorama said that she will NOT act with Nagesh as "Jodi" in any more new films and till date she keeps up her words :-(("
