Hi everybody. I have taken the pain of typing up this very long and very good interview of Rahman's that came on AVMAX on their first ever issue this month. It's a cover story(interview) on Rahman and he has given some really great answers. Read the interview!

reporter,
Thanks for the effort. It was definitely a good interview. Though there were the typical questions that amateur journos masquerading as music critics ask the MD, there were some good ones, e.g. on the sound engineers and his rapport with them.
The only point that I didn't quite understand was his contradictory views on 'diction'. Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan have been accepted in mainstream Hindi films because their diction is good. Hari, especially wouldn't have become a reputed Ghazal singer, if he had not mastered his Urdu. Why shouldn't the Udit Narayans and Sukhwinders try and get at least the diction right (from the greatest ever Tamil lyricist himself) if not learning the language? (even the Hariharan: his rendition of "Suttum Vizhi chudar than" -kkkk was quite bad: he sings 'Sutrum, meaning 'revolving'!!!)
It is not just the music or tune or beat that appeals to you. It also lies in understanding the words, their meaning. Most of the gems from ARR's repertoire have had good rendition of the lyrics: e.g. 'PORALE PonnuthaAyi', 'Netru Illatha MAtram', 'MinnalE Nee Vandadhenadi', 'KaNNA Moochi'...
Compare them with the 'Common common O KAmAchee's and 'PAlakkAttu MacHAnukku' etc.
The answer lies in 1. the attitude of the present day MDs and lyricists and 2. The speed at which recordings are done these days. "Mr. Singh, if you are stopping over at Madras on your way to Tirupati, gimme half an hour, and I will finish a song for you", seems to be the attitude.
Rahman is very good at getting the best output from his musicians. I wishfully wish Rahman shows the same earnestness in getting the right pronounciation from his singers as well.
He has the power to tell the Hariharans, Udit Narayans and Sukhwinders, 'Indru pOy nALai vA'. He should just excercise it! And I am sure they will obey!
Thanks again for taking the pains to type in and share the interview with us.

AV MAX is an audio video magazine that is brought out by Tata Donnelley, a subsidiary of Tata groups. It's principally an audio video magazine that focuses on the latest digital technology and communications. It was launched in December 1999. But it also features interviews and profiles of musicians, national and international. This months interview was with Rahman. He was on the front page. There was some information about his equipment too...For further information visit http://www.tatadonnelley.com/avmax.htm. You can see this issues cover.

"It is only now that people say what a good score 'Pudhiya Mugam' actually is."
This line is exactly true. Many didn't like it and said that it was a copy of Roja (in my school days), but now I see many saying it is one of his best.
Boy, for me it is THE BEST. No other musical (IR/ARR's rest) and any other MD's had moved me so much as Pudhiya Mugam did. I don't know why, and , others taste may differ, but this one composition will remain top in my list for ever.
I got a bit emotional because, I see no ARR fans say even a word about PM and also since ARR himself has mentioned it in this interview, I could not control.
Thanx REPORTER.

ambience for that tune. I think this is more improtant than learning all the techinical gymnastics of music[laughs].
I mean a composer is exactly that; he has to compose. He needn't arrange a 101-piece orchestra to get a certain mood. This, sadly, is a folly that many composers fall prey to. What they are trying to do is overwhelm people with sound and not emotional content.

ARR dude, please dont learn all the technical gymnastics of music !!! (I think I know who he is talking about :))

I agree with Neels. Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan cannot be branded as 'Tamils'. Their Hindi diction is perfect. That is why they are accepted in Bollywood.
Moreover, comparing the Tamil of SPB/PS and the Hindi of HH/SM is totally absurd. HH and SM grew up in the North and so they deserve NO credit for their Hindi. Whereas SPB/PS/SJ etc grew up in Andhra and managed to sing near perfect Tamil. That is a great achievement.
He says tamilians forgive diction-murder if the tune is good. Did he ever evaluate that with the Hindi audience? Did he ever try thaeni kunjaarammaa or pushpavanam kuppusamy in a Hindi movie?

doubter,
"He says tamilians forgive diction-murder if the tune is good"
He didn't say that.Instead he said
"Once people like the tune, they forgive small transgressions in diction and pronunciation."
I think there is a great degree of difference between what you said and what he said. Please don't exaggerate as it would make us biased.

"The reaction is that Rahman is burnt out, he is getting repetitive, hea has no future. Four months down the line, after the film releases, the same people say that the music is very good(laughs)"
Rahman, those days are slowly dimnishing..Rahman style has now become everybody's style (like HJ and others) and before you relase one, 10 of your styles are released. If there are people to stay "Still Rahman is Rahman", then I pity for them. The trend which gave a break to you won't serve you good any long.. You haven't told anything different from what I have been saying for years...If you still feel great about your music..I pity for the hearers.. Hope ARR sees this and laughs within himself!

it is not flifo desperation which continues...it is ARR 's desperation which continues.

Fliflo,
I think everybody has their unique style of composing.I think HJ has his unique style. If you ask HJ he would explain to you clearly why his style is unique and different from Rahman's.If you ask YSR or KR they would expalin to you why their style is unique and surely diifernent from anyone else say IR or ARR.
Could you elaborate with little more depth about the sameness in style?
"If there are people to stay "Still Rahman is Rahman", then I pity for them"
I still love his music(Tenali was a low point of his career) and I would anyday say Rahman is Rahman and IR is IR and YSR is YSR.Another advantage to this I have all your pity added to Rahman's great music.
"Hope ARR sees this and laughs within himself!"
I'm pretty sure he would laugh within himself. But I wouldn't be sure about the reason for that laugh. But if you could please enlighten me.
Again,Thanks a lot for your pity.

It was nice and simple interview.
fliflo....so what ?....who days are not diminishing, tell me. You are so desparate to the core.
When Ir told about plastic musicians, we all knew whom he was talking about, he is getting it back with interest thats all. As of today arr theory is correct, he became famous with his music not with is talk or samiyar veshams.
