We all know that IR has sung many memorable songs, but here are four of my all-time favorties.
4) Dharisnam Kedaikatha - Alaigal Oivyathillai - first song I heard IR singing, and it instantly become one of my favorites.
3)Valli Valli Ena Vanthan - Deiva Vaaku - Another unforgettable song sung by IR.
2)Thendral Vanthu Theendum Pothu - Avatharam - WOW, is what I said when I first heard this song. Absolutely phenomenal song and it would have been my #1 song if it weren't for....
1)Naan Thedum Sevvanthi Poove - Dharma Pathini - the best song that IR has sung, in my opinion. Also has amazing lyrics. Just edges out Thendral Vanthu.....,
So, there are my picks. I like to know some of yours.

isaiosai,
Your first phrase is correct... if you love Raja's voice, I think you'll love the following collections
Golden voice of IR (the same company made a CD called voice of Deva, but never mind :))
I am with you
The irresistable Ilayaraja
And I made my own collection called Voice of Eternity :-D

Some of the songs I like sung by IR are:
metti oli kaatrodu (metti)
kathal oviyam (alaigal oivathillai)
poomalaiyey thol seravaa (pagal nilavu)
thendral vanthu (avatharam)
naan thedum sevvanthi
thindaduthey rendu kiliyey (ananda kummi)
janani janani
IR's voice is definitely not the best, but I wouldn't bear to hear these songs in any other voice. His compositions (the better ones) are that sacred to me. In fact when I sing these songs myself (bathroom singing) I consciously harden my voice to get the IR effect. :)

the title song to the film 'mullum malarum' is really good and rarely heard or available.
he is my fav voice more than his music. his voice saved my life once. cold hearts, cold days, windswept dreams that beg a destiny...yet before the end could be captured and broken dreams could be swept away into broken end i heard his voice and was saved. .....but.....

clearly depicts (for the nth time) the typical attitude of the frog in a well. it feels the well it is in to be "THE world" and never wants to come out of it;-))))

4) Oru kanam oru yugamaga
Others:
5) Intha maan undhan sondha maan
6) Malare pesu mounamozhi (Geethanjali)
More later.

Isaiosai (thanks for omitting my name in your response, you are a class act!)you can have your opinion, I can't have mine? You can shout IRs praises from rooftops about his singing - I have absolutely no problem with it. In my estimation IR is a truly gifted musical wizard. The best TFM pied-piper around - for the last 25 years. But he is not - I repeat - he is not a SINGER. And one does not have to be a frog in the well or a frog in the pond or the frog in the ocean to figure this out. IR can compose many a wonderful tune. But he himself, in his own voice, can't carry a tune. Ask anybody who know the sa re ga of music, a ear without wax and a head without prejudice - and they will tell you so. You can hold on to your praises, but stop patronising me ok??
(Ditto for ARR, Bhappi Lahiri, RDB - all non-singers. MSV, SDB maybe have a few songs here and there - but I wouldn't put their name next to any legendary singer's either.)

Naaz,
Music is subjective. IR, ARR singing has fan following. Fans like it. It might be prejudice, but it doesnt matter. For the fan, music is for personal entertainment,... for the composer, it is a market, his/her source of livelihood. A prejudiced fan is as important to a composer as a neutral fan. Both pay the same for a cassette/CD.
Thousands of (prejudiced?) people like IR's voice in most of his songs (general statement... cant back up with facts) So IR sings to please his fans. Ditto with ARR, and others.

Venkatesh, I have 'Oru kanam oru yugamaga' on CD. listening to it right now (wat a coincidence!).
How abt "thenpaadi cheemaiyile" & "nila adhu" from Nayagan?
btw, a slight digression:
"Vaana naina, andha pakkam poogathey"
why do tamils always make fun of 'naina'? wat's so funny about tat??

clearly repeats for the (n+1)th time the typical attitude of the frog in a well:-)
/--But he himself, in his own voice, can't carry a tune.--\
Ask anybody who knows the sa re ga of music, a ear without wax and a head without prejudice, and they will tell you otherwise. I feel I am one such person;-))
Everyone knows IR's not-so-great voice, and, (in spite of that,) the fact that he has some memorable songs to his credit. IR singing some good songs is as true as all singers having some bad songs to their credit. Digest the fact that at times he has been preferred to other professional singers.
Oblivious as is your abilities to comprehend, as seen from your pathetic attempts of making out head and tail of some posts of fellow dfers in various threads, and even dismissing some as non-contribution towards the topic on hand, I admire your audacity for the useful contribution to this thread with your first post here.
For your benefit, I repeat the title of this thread - "Best songs sung by IR", his "best songs". Given the scope, you know what all opinions you can express. And I hope you know what to do if you have nothing useful and relevant to contribute.

Naaz,
I do not know about musical nuances or about the proper ways of singing, but his voice really makes my day... Just a few minutes back I was listening to "Undhan Raajiyathil" in my car... WOW!!
But you say he is not a SINGER - can I have the definition of SINGER in your terms?
