'neeyum bommai naanum bommai nenachu partha ellam bommai' song from the movie bommai. KJY's first song in Veenai s.balachandar's music. The sad songs I have heard so far, this is the ultimate. My other favourites are 'kadhal rojave' from roja, 'kanavugale kanavugala' from movie aanandha raagam, 'idhayame idhayame' song from idhayam and 'padaithane' song from nichaya thamboolam.

La Brucia Terra by Franc D'Ambrosio from the Godfather III is defintely the most beautiful sad song from any film I have seen. It's sung in Italiano. Here's a link to hear it in realplayer or to see the film clip.

I am looking for some sad songs...some in English..I haven't listened to those previously mentioned although I may now...I play the ones I have when everbody else is asleep..and remember my dead wife..my dead mother, father, and friends...then I weep for a time before I go to sleep...

Being a melody buff, I will attempt to answer that question.

Shanmugapriya

Kamavardhani
Dharmavathi
Mayamalavagowlai
Mohanam
Charukesi
Bhairavi
Mukhari

In reality, any raaga can be fodder for pathos, depending on the composer's handling of it, as well as the orchestration. Even something like Sudhasaveri or Vakhulabharanam could make the listener feel very sad, though I feel neither raaga works for sogam situations in most cases.

Mr. Davis! Sorry to hear that! My condolences! Unfortunately, I can't really make any recommendations to you sir.

Purv,Prabhu: Ragas are also classified by mood(rasa) - Karuna,shringaram (romance),roudram(anger),bhayam(fear) etc. Not all ragas can be used for pathos. Shivaranjani is probably the most used. For example, Atana is used for roudram or veruppu(hatred). Hamsadhwani and Nattai are used for Veeram(valour).
