SPB vs Kishore kumar SPB vs Kishore kumar

Hi folks,
many people beleive SPB is very great and so is Kishore kumar .
should SPB be called south indian kishore kumar or should kishore kumar be called north indian SPB !!....who is great among these two and why ??

very good one....When I was a Boston my room mate is a great fan of KK and criticised SPB as he is not changing emotions based on actors(tms did for sivaji and mgr)....

mr s, spb is such a versatile singer and his voice is so diving that it is impoosible to find another singer like spb. spb sings differently for sivakuma,rajini,kamal,prabhu,karthik,vijayakant and present day artists.
Also kk cannot be called spb of north as spb is very much above kk.

SPB's great versatility can be heard of how he modulates in accordance to various moods based for the song. He is not fully classically trained and is well liked by every MD for his uniqueness. He was indeed born for singing.

Hey - SPB was far more versatile than KK. Why is this forum full of ridiculous comparisons?
Kishore cannot be called N. Indian SPB as he wasnt that versatile.

Kishore Kumar was not the one for classical songs at all. He was fantastic for crazy,light hearted songs and he really poured his heart into it. He was also very spontaneous and had a good range. Kishore was also good at sad songs and could touch very high pitches easily.

But SPB had all of this and more - the more part is his expertise at singing classical & devotional songs.

However one more thing - if u are talking about Hindi songs ONLY, then KK wins EASILY.SPB doesnt even BEGIN to compare.

I was not talking abt singinig in any languages, but abt the singing talents, I know SPB easily wins over Rafi & KK, in terms of singing talents & voice wise!

i agree with u. Over KK he wins easily. Over Rafi - well slightly - basically SPBs classical numbers are what interest me a lot, thats why I prefer him even above Rafi who is another favourite of mine.

No. SPB is neithor south KK nor KK is north SPB. SPB wins above KK by huge margin in singing talents.He is a modulaion master.

SPB can not be compared with KK.

SPB way ahead of KK as a singer. But as an artist KK scores more than SPB. KK is an all-rounder.

There is one person who I can compare with KK in South - that's Chandrababu.

There is one person who I can compare with SPB in north - that's is Rafi.

You will agree KK is a much better actor, comedian, dancer than SPB. That's what I mean. I am not sure whether KK did dubbing.

On the lighter side - KK married thrice. Can SPB match? :)

Haha, SPB is gentleman, so he can not match KK in this matter, perhaps the Gemini Gameshan, Kamal Hasan or Mithun Charaborti can match, why even succeed KK in this matter ;))

SPB sir is a class of it's own!!!

true, but other greats like KJY, RAFI are classes of their own!. As an allrounder, Dr.SPB will score over others, but in singing, he is great and not the greatest which is Padmasree Padmabhushan Dr.K.J Yesudas!

If you have to feel the sublimest, the most touching emotions a human is capable of feeling, you have to listen to the classical renditions by SPB. Not the Shankarbharanam-like songs, not the Tamil classical songs composed by Ilayaraja. These are the classical based songs that were composed by the likes of Satyam and Rajan-Nagendra. In order to excavate the extraordinary classical ones you will have to dig deep into the Telugu and Kannada songs from the whole of 70s untill mid 80s. No other musical search might be so elevating, so rewarding.

These rare songs are not available anywhere on the web. Vividh Bharati used to relay them rarely (for sure) in its Madhur Geetam program in the mid 90s. Since then I have not been lucky enough to spot such classical based thunderstorms.

Okay, let me elaborate the reasons based on which I consider Dr.KJY as the greatest!

1. Unparallelled blending of classical and film music. It is impossible to find out another singer who has succeeded in both arenas to such a high.

2. VOICE: I haven't felt a voice as melodious as KJy's. The second comes RAFI, and SPB is third. (Of course in singing talent, SPB comes second and RAFI is third!)

3. VERSATILITY: In this forum, I have seen people saying SPB more versatile than KJY. I feel that it depends on the concept of versatility. To them, VERSATILITY is defined on the lower end, only for MELODY/SAD/DABBANKOOTHU songs which SPB is excellent at. But for me KJY's VERSATILITY stands on the higher end, namely,CLASSICAL/DEVOTIONAL/MELODY/SAD songs. Indeed SPB has sung good semi classical songs (SHANKARA..is a SEMI-CLASSICAL song and not a CLASSICAL song!). Please listen to KJY's song "Sree Vinayakam Namamyaham" (RAGA Hamsadhwani) from the Malayalam film "Bharatam". That's called CLASSICAL!

4. BHAVAM: I can't finger out a singer who can brig out the BHAVAM of the type of songs in which he excels, as KJY.

5. BASS: I strictly don't accept the fact that SPB has the best bass. This is FALSE. One may listen to KJY's songs "Ottakkami nadam" and "Pramadavanam" (His highness Abdulla) to analyse this. I accept that SPb may have niche above KJY in going to higher pitches, but again, the high pitch depends on your startin pitch.I also have felt that SPB is roaring at high pitches.

6. MODULATION: please don't listen to KJY's Tamil songs to hear modulation. Use MALLU songs. Again doing Chuckling/MIMICRY can't be framed as singing talent. Of course, thats a talent!

You may feel that why I pointed out MALLU songs. KJY is indeed a MALLU singer by birth and most of his classy songs are in Malayalam. tamil (except IR) had always loved josh filled Dabbankoothu/Romantic songs. KJY was used mostly for SAD/DEVOTIONAL/CLASSICAL songs.

In Hindi, KJY has sung classic number which still is reverberating in people's ears.

1. "Jab deep Jale Ana"(I can't think of SPB singing that!)

2. Ka karron Sajani

3. Teri Tasweer ko

4. Zhid Na Karo

5. Dekho Kanha Nahi

You please listen to these songs and just imagine whether you can compare these with SPB's so called INSTANT POPULAR numbers such as

1. Dil Deewana

2. Dekha Hai Pehli Baar

3. Tere mere Beechume (A good song!)

4. Jiye to Jiye

5. Aja Shaam

Even in Tamil, why IR used KJY for Sindhubhairavi? - please don't say that SPB was busy, may be true but that was not the reason!. SPB would never have done justice to the complex gamakams in the songs "Moham ennum Teeyil" based on kanakangi raga (Oh, this is the toughest one!) and Kalaivaniye (kalyani raga). KJY himself withdrew from the National Award competition for a few years!

In this forum, people use KJY's Tamil/Hindi and SPB Tamil/Hindi songs to decide "who is the best PLAYBACK singer INDIA had ever produced!!!" Don't you feel funny?. KJY's main forte is Malayalam, and one should use the Malayalam songs to do the comparison!.Otherwise, you can put SPB as No:1 in Tamil only, which I also agree.

Here is a list of a few top MALLU songs of KJY. Please listen to them!

1. Pramadavananm vendum... (Raga: Jog) (Film: His Highness Abdulla)

2. Devanganangal.. (Raga: Kalyani) (Film: Njan Gandharvan)- you'll know the sweetness!

3. Neeraduvan..(raga: Sudha Saveri) (Film: Nakhakshatangal)- you'll realize what gamaka is!

4. Anuragalolagatri.. (Raga: Kapi) (Film: Dhwani)

5. Harimuraleeravam... (raga: Sindhubhairavi) (Film: Aram Thampuran)

6. Srivinayakam (raga: Hamsadhwani) (Film: Bharatam) - (ultimate song!)

7. Ottakkambi nadam (raga: Madhyamavati) (Film: Thenum vayambum) (you'll feel the real bass!)

8. Sumuhoorthamay (Ragamalika - Hamsadhwani, Abhogi, Saramati, pathuvarali, Madhyamavati)(Film: Kamaladalam)-(top one!)

9. Nadabhrahmatin.. (ragamalika) (Film: kattukurangu)

10. Sayanthanam.. (raga: Mand) (Film; Kamaladalam)

11. Sangethame.. (raga: Jonpuri) (Film: Sargam)

12. Ramakadhaganalayam (raga: Subhapanthuvarali) (Film: Bharatam) (ultimate!)

13. Anuragini (raga: Kalyani) (Film: Oru Kudakeezhil) (MELODY!)

There are some songs which either KJY or SPB can sing, but not the abovementioned songs!

ONCE AGAIN, these were MY VIEWS. Since this is a comparison, I had to pin point the pros and cons which I feel!.I too hold a high degree of respect for Dr.SPB for his songs( I know that he is a gentle and generous and a good actor). Thats why I put him near to Dr.KJY in singing talents. But in VOICE, I just can't prevent RAFI getting the second plae!

who is KK and comparing with SPB hahahahahaha so bad taste thread. Should be KK and UN (Udit narayanan), here KK will win definitely.
