  Dear friends,
  It is indeed a source of great joy to hear that ARR has been conferred with Padma Shri Award. As a person interested in Tamil Film Music I congratulate ARR on this new Award. I do not really know the criteria used for such selection. In the context of appreciations and felicitations pouring on ARR for all his works, I really try to find what exactly is ARR's unique and specific contribution to MUSIC and to TFM. I still think that he has introduced some new sound technology which has increased the quality of recording and in fact his songs are very good from the point of view of recording. But what has it do with composition? He is a good sound Engineer with a good musical background.But he is not a composer in its true sense. Any composition should have a natural flow and development. If it is a hotch potch of bits and pieces collected on various occasions, or if it is a creation born of undue labouring on it, it is not an art, it is not music. Music that comes from one's soul does not need any decoration and ornamentation to make it appealing. It is bound to be appealing if it comes from one's own inner recesses of the heart. I think IR's many many pieces belong to the category of music welling up from source of Music, that is soul. Why most of ARR's songs are in high pitch? In some cases they begin in low pitch then somewhere in the song you can be sure there will be a pitch so high as not to be becoming of a music that is supposed to sooth one's physiqe and soul rather than rupture one's throat. Can anyone of you tell me why most of his songs are in an undue high pitch? We also have to analyse each TFM songs in terms of their relevance to the mood of the movie. I am sure ARR is the biggest failure in this regard. Most of his songs are far-removed from the mood and the theme of the story or a context of a particular sequence in films.
  In ARR's songs there is an explanation of the obvious. For example, in the film 'Indian' in 'Telephone manipol sirippaval invaLA' when the words 'Zakkir Hussainin thabala..' are sung one can hear a Tabla sound in the back ground. I am much disgusted by this.For any artistic production should have only hints and suggestive aspects. Only then it has some impact on the mind and heart. In Karuthamma also we have a song which is another example. In this regard IR has done wonders. He has used enormous musical symbols and signs in his songs.

I can understand if someone feels bad that his/her idol didn't get an award but I can't understand why anyone should feel bad if anyone other than his/her idol gets an award. Agreed that IR hasn't got his due recognition. But, that doesn't mean he is not great. He is one of the greatest composers this country has seen, irrespective of what awards he has got or should have got. At the same time, ARR is also a talented musician (though he still has to go a long way to reach IR's status) and I'm happy that atleast he is getting some recognition from the government.

  It is not IR who alone is yet to be recognized. IMO, if KJY is a winner of the coveted award and so is ARR, what is the contribution of MSV, SPB PS and Janaki ? hmm..Atleast SPB has a nation wide recognition, IR is known as a music composer who "inspires" hindi MDs..But MSV..Not much attention has been paid to this genius..:-(

  I think KJY won it for carnatic.To the best of my knowledge ARR is the first TFM artist to win this award.Great achievment. It again goes to prove marketing skills can make wonders.

  Arr's achievement in putting Vande Maataram back in the mouths of our youngsters and raising the patriotism and also in popularising Indian music to the west in itself deserves what he got. Shouldn't IR have got this award before ARR is another story altogether. But certainly ARR desrves what he got. Congats ARR... You have certainly done us proud.

  Next year ARR might even be getting Dadasaheb Phalke award which is normally given to people after they retire !!!
  
  Since Sabesh Murali is composing BGM for him,he should also get Padma Shri isn't it? Also Diamond who pens all the wonderful lyrics for him should be awarded Padma Vibhushan.
  
  I had some regards for the BJP govt but it looks like they have made these awards look like film fare awards.
  
  But considering ARR got a national award for Minsara Kanavu,it doesn't surprise me ! That was the biggest joke for me.
  
  I don't think people become patriotic after listening to his Vande Mathram.Rather he used Patriotism to market his pop music.

  I can agree if Deva gets Padma Sree award for composing highest number of films. If IR does not get this it is a shame on the govt and award committee. Remember MGR getting this before Sivaji. Did Kamal get this? Awards are based on many criterias which will change with the govt.
