Often, I bacame part of discussions involving the mastery of Ilayaraja. Die hards claimed he could take Hollywood "by storm". I was a bit skeptical. I couldn't picture Bruce Willis or Anne Heche or Dustin Hoffman mouthing a lilting English hit with Tamil overtones as they floated down the Colorado River in a canoe with flowers all around them and the hero rescues the pretty little heroine from the gaping jaws of a vicious rattlesnake. Can someone take this further and expand? Assume Ilayaraja WANTS to make it in Hollywood.

Suresh,
My posting was an impression/generalisation. Yours seem to be an evaluation of the current state of affairs. BTW, I dont think sEthu or bArathi were that great. I am not well-informed on the literary scene in TN, so cant say much. Yeah, I do know that 'art' movies also dont do very well in Kerala. But do we have directors of that calibre in TN ? I am not questioning you, but surely seeking your opinion.
If the direction and story is good, there is scope for BGM. See, I ended the digression :)

Imagine most of 4000 songs digitized for 7.1 surround sound and remade entirely with softer instruments, and exotic western instruments?!! I just can't resist that idea. That is when Music and Sounds like nobody ever heard ever!

If some film director in H'wood wants IR to give a score, more power to him. Better an IR score than John Williams.

In one of IR interview in Malayalam Channel, during early 90's, he gave beautiful examples of 'How Indianised Songs can be made Western'. He demonstrated it beatifully.
He is so talented that I used to often wonder why this chap heas not gone international? Some External Factor is Resisting Him.
Imagine these Songs (if turned Western)
1. Megam Kottatum Attam Undu...
2. Puttukkal Podatha...
3. Nil Nil Nil Pathil Sol...
4. Rim Jim (Mahavir)...
5. Kadhal Pattuthan Padikko...
His BGM's of Films like 'Guru', 'Devadhai', 'Kalapani', 'Lazza', 'Paandavaas', 'Geethanjali' and so many.. were truly on par with hollywood standards.

I too agree that IR has delivered greats in TFM.But when you consider Hollywood ,i think IR may not get a chance to work in big movies .The Best possiblity will be to work in a B-Grade Hollywood movie .This is becase the number of studios is less and the studios /Directors have aasthana MDs !!!!!
also in Hollywood ,the critiscm is very severe .Even a movie like Titanic whose BGM was selling hot cakes in India ( even ) ,the music was branded as 'Average '.

Ravi ,
Iam a fan of IR !!!But to say he will do better than John WIlliams may not be correct .John williams is the number 1 MD in Hollywood !!!!!But i wish that IR does some good tamil movie ( liek HeyRam ,Marudhyanyagam ) ..
Ok ..But this is what HeyRam ,Lajja conductro said of his score in Hey Ram ,Lajja ...
1.Nee Partha ( HeyRam) -
"ANybody can score for the same situation ..But not this music !!!!! ..Raaja ,U are a special composer !!!I have travelled all over world and i have conducted the compositions of greats and i can point out the mistakes .But i could not find any mistake in ur score .The mistakes which hve occured are due to the fact that u write it so fast ....( Later) This man does not seem to struggle for ideas ,ideas come freely to him !!!!"
2.Lajja - 'Raaja ,whatever we recorded in these 10 days is pure hollywodd music .But too much for ur bollywood kind !!!"
Later ,the conductor said to his troop members ( i think 90 of them ) that the whole score for Lajja was composed in 10 days ( and that of Heyram in 15 days !!!) ..Several members shouted " it is impossible " ..But the conductor said that teh fact is TRUE and he is a genuine and qualified composer !!!

If ARR can make it in hollywood, there is no doubt that IR can rule hollywood

IR doesn't have to go to Hollywood, hollywood will come to him and ask for one of the zillion 30 second interludes to form the score for a Star Wars or Batman movie. Period. Get an orchestra, give the copyright for an interlude and they can build 1000 variations enough to last a few franchises.... IR can create havoc in Hollywood from Chennai itself. But, scoring for a suave film like Catch Me If You Can might mean IR immersing himself for a while in that kind of environment.

Ramana was in my opinion a great effort by IR interms of background score. I could easily compare his performance in Ramana to any Engligh Movie score. He DEFINETLY has the talent and with a little experience can come up to the top.

being an IR fan i wish to add on something on this.
in my opinion IR has never been exposed to the variety of subjects/plots of the movies made in hollywood. here we hav stereotyped movies and subjects and he had been exposed only to these kindss for the past 25 yrs.
listening to the background scores of movies like ROAD TO PERDITION, BRAVE HEART, GLADIATOR or the recent ones like MATRIX RELOADED, HULK. i can sense the variety or themes the MDs r exposed to in hollywood. think can ever IR score for MATRIX. in my opinion he can never attempt this. of course he can score for period movies like GLADIATOR OR BRAVEHEART with the rich knowledge he has got in composing symphonies. but he can never deliver other kind of music for hollywood.
he already wasted a chance frm ashok amirtaraj in BLOODSTONE. even over here there were strong critisicms on the BGM of that movie.
correct me if iam wrong

Rajasaranam,
Dont you think NEVER is too strong to attribute to IR?
In my opinion, IR could prove himself if there was the right subject!! may be it will take more time for him to get that feel, it will surely be less than 2 years
Probably he might be better, may be a new dimension in Music.

Musicislife,
thx for enlightening me. id be the happiest person if ever RAJA makes it in HW. but i jus wanted to know if he cud ever deliver the kind of music Matrix had. the 20+ minutes of chasing seqquence had heavy techno beats init which suited well with the sequence. but IR is against these kinds of stuff.consider a sci-fi action movie can he do it with his limited knowledge in those kinds of movies. may be he'll redefine the whole sequence in his own way. jus wondering will that suit????
BTW listen to his BGM in DECEMBER POOKAL where mohan chases revathi to kill her. man that was gr8.

Rajasaranam, for some strange reason the BGM in the first 10-12 minutes of Road to Perdition reminded me very strongly of IR's BGM. I night have influenced your feel for it, but can you keep this in mind and watch the movie again? I would love to know if it is just my imagination or there is something to it.

Even Felix Mendelsohn's symphony no .3 ,No .4 also reminds me of IR !!!Ir ha sbeen strongly influenced by these symphonies !!!Probably the music composers of RTD must have bene inspired from these symphonies too !!!
