TMS&P.SUSEELA VS SPB&S.JANAKI

I certainly think and feel that TMS& P.SUSEELA,jodi which really dominated the tamil film music in the 60"s and 70"s is the BEST duet pair we ever had.Even IR"S favourite SPB,S.JANAKI jodi is no where near to them.

  Why a doubt? Do we need a discussion on this? The golden era of TFM has only one Kannadasan,One MSV,One TMS and One PS. Those were the days when the lyrics, voice had prominence. IRU IMAYANGAL are bench marks and beyond comparison.

  I am reminded of one of (Kumudam's) arasu badhilgaL: PS-TMS - pallavi; SJ-SPB - anupallavi; Chitra-ManO (in those days) - charaNam.

  TMS/PS duets are predominantly high-pitch stuff with lot of monotony and lack of variety. My vote goes to SPB/SJ pair as all time great. (Not just Raja bias...Tell me one MSV duet that can beat Sippi irukkuthu)

  Hi Eden Chippi irukuthu is by MSV only.
  The better duet than Chippi irukuthu us Pon Ezil Poothathu puthu vaanil. If u say there were no variety in TMS-PS combo, then it is sure that u haven't listen to them. Eden I feel u must be IR fan.

  Can anybody beat o vasantha raja,Andhi mazhai pozhigirathu,rathiriyil pothirukkum etc? No way. TMS sings with his plain kattukathal voice and PS inspite of her voice does not have the variety of SJ.

  One more point MSV told in an interview. Singers nalla paaduraangka enpathaal ellap paataium avangkalaye paada vaikak koodathu. Avangka avangka kuraluku ethu aakumo athaithaan avangkaluku kodukannum. IR no1 aanapuram SPB SJ mattume perumpaalana paatukalaip paadinaarkal. Pala paatukaluku avarkal porutham illathavarkalaha irundthaarkal.
  SPB-SJ combo-il nalla paate illai enru naan cholla varavillai. Aanal avangka paadina nalla irukatha paatellam paadinaarkal. Pala SJ paatukalai VJ paadiirundthaal nanraaka irundthirukum.
  
  MSV music SJ paadiya ella paatukkalume superb. niraiya paadalai. aanal ellame nalla paatu. een? avangka kuraluku poruthama varumpothu avangkalai payan paduthika thavariyathillai.

  GR! you got me wrong, just to comment without Raja bias, I chose a MSV number in VNS. I can list a lot more of SPB-SJ-non IR numbers. But all this can be termed subjective...taste related...I can only say about my choice, nobody can prove their choice as the `all-time-best' IMO.

  In my view, singers have their own specialities. TMS can sing in high pitch without compensating on the pronounciation of the words. similarly, PS is very concerned about the words in her songs and you can by listening the songs write down the songs without any difficulty. SPB's voice is a voice which could suit any kind of songs. It has some sweetness in it and is a time tested voice. It is this voice which had made name in the tamil industry as well as in the Hindi industry. SJ's voice is a gift for her and there is no doubt that is a peculiar voice available to her. I had the opportunity of being present in one of her katcheries and the voice, thought she is now old, has not changed much is really a talented singer. SJ has the talent of portraining various varieties throught her voice without showing much actions. She can make noice of laughing in betwen a song without, without moving her lips.
  
  SJ was chosen by MSV to sing the song "Singara Velane Deva" competing with the sweet sound of "Nathaswaram" which MSV admitted to be a rare song he did. That was the talent SJ came out with in her beginning.
  
  The varieties done by SPB and SJ are superb and the varieties done by TMS and PS are also not second to them.
  
  Thought I do not very much prefer the voice of TMS, the voice of PS and SJ are golden voices of south India.
  
  The songs done by SJ like the one "Senthura Poove" , " Ponnana meni Ullasam Kondadum Rani" are some of the rarest varieties which bring her talent.
  
  The song done by SJ with AR Rahman's music, "Nenchinile Nenchinile UUnchale" really brings the high pitch at which SJ could sing. After all what doubt she got the best singer price last year.
  
  The trend in the industry in 60,70's were importance was for the words more than the music during MSV period. The trend during 70,80 were words and music were both given equal status during IR and now music is given preference during ARRAhman.
  
  Really We cannot compare the varieties done by the songer because the varieties are chosen by the music directors. In comparing the talents of singer, it is their vice which has to be considered.
  
  It is a pity that thought PS has a very nice soothing voice, she is not realy doing latest songs. Is it the industry which has kept her away or has she chosen to be away?
  
  
  In my view, the songs done by SPB and Janaki combination has, as said by some one else, the most different varieties in which their voice talents have been portraied.

  There is no Doubt abt that.. PS+TMS is the BEST Combination For Ever..
  
  Many Songs..
  For eg.. Naan Pesa ninaipathellam
  Neerodum Vaigayile nindradum
  & the Ultimate is Malarndhum Malaradha Paadhi
  
  but when u consided SPB+SJ
  spb adds unnencessary things while sj's voice will b so shrill for many heroines for whom her voice doesnt suit at all..

  Why such a word " kaatu kathal" ? TMS is one who pronounce the Thamizh properly. He sings in any range. No one now in the Industry can sing his 1950's songs like "erikarayin mele" or "pattum naane ". Who said that " he cant sing in base voice?" . " Thannerile thaamaripoo from thangai " , "un kannil neer vazhinthal en kannil uthiram kottuthadi " , and chellkilye mella pesu are base songs. SPB is just copying Rafi . additionally he does gimmicks, mimicry etc. I don’t think this needs some skill. It needs only "THICK SKIN". (sample: nethu rathiri yamma). TMS can sing in SPB's range and few songs they sang together was dominated by TMS.
  Few of TMS duets I am adding as samples . Hear and then justify the kaatu kathal.

  ( thennaimara thoppukkulle kuyile" from "thekku theru machan" is the one more version of the song . see the difference)

  ( enna oru nalinam!!?)

  ( folk - kindal , keli)
  6. nalla kaalam varuguthu , nalla kaalam varuguthu (puthayal)
  ( chama kodangi ( raa padi ) type song. Just hear the once. They perfectly fit in this song)

  ( A road drama song - hear and justify. Don’t forget PS's mother tongue is telugu how much she should have been struggled to get the right effect)

  Ethana variety vendum ? How they moulded their voice to bring the right situations in front of us? TMS ans PS duets are the best in TFM.
  Appuram , innoru vishayam, Antha " anthi mazhai pozhigirathu" -la enna vishesham? A beautiful composition by IR. Any profeesional singer can sing that song. You may appreciate the husky voice of SJ. But have you heared "Neeradum azhahllam" from "IthayaVeenai" by PS? She produced the husky voice better. So, it is not a big task for PS or VJ or chitra.

  personally, I think tms is an amazing singer-he is an unsung hero in indian film scene-just like IR, sivaji and kamal.his variety and range is amazing.the songs he has sung for the heroes of late 50's to early 70's are some of the best in IFM-what to do-he has the badluck of being a tamilian.not even one award for someone who has the calibre to sing neerodum vaigaiyile or a nilavu oru pennagi?his tamil was perfect from the beginning-not like sp or kj who improved as they went along.and his ability to modulate for sivaji or mgr was amazing.he had a differernt sounding voice for the likes of jaishanker or ravichandran or AVM rajan.just like the present generation who thinks IR is no good, we think the same about TMS-his big mouth does not help things,too.
