Excellent job by KVM and Chidambaram Jayaraman. ( brother-in-law of kalaignar Karunanithi?) Jayaraman had a unique voice and style of singing with a shiver in the throat. My other favorites from him include “ anbalE thediya “ and “ viNNOdum mugilOdum” Remember his “kaa kaa kaa” from Sivaji’s first movie “parasakthi”.?

Yesterday, Andi mazhai did pozhindhadhu, in my hamlet.
Sangeetha sowbhaagyame was my childhood fav song and I learnt to identify raagas thru this song , agasthiyar's 'vendriduven' and thirivilaiyaadal's 'Oru naal podumaa' songs as base reference

How different is kaambodhi raagam from others or what is so special in that compared to other raagas, that attracted Lord Shiva??
Does this mean that, only Ravananan was the only one who was able to sing in this Raaga (soo tough or something else added to this!)?
Are there any movie songs composed based on this Raaga?

This song is a find! I am hearing it for the first time (that should tell you something about the huge, gaping holes in my auditory history) and I depend on SOTD to educate and enthrall me with such selections.
This is exactly what I mean by native-context and inalienable authenticity. Every aspiring musician/singer/lyricist ought to mine these cultural depths before sounding the first bar or syllable. SOTD can be a gentle tutor in this regard. Thanks for this invaluable music lession, and please do so with regularity!
(Manisegaran's exposition regarding this song is an indispensible annotation to this learning. Thanks also to him for his lucid commentary.)

The last veenai bit (i guess) is in bilahari. and it comes very close to the KJY's jathi (nam-dham-dham-dha nam-dham-dham-dha-nam) singing in 'koondhalile megam vandhu' - balanagamma.

haris. the last veeNai bit is kamboji. However, bilahari is a close cousin of kambhoji.

I didn't know about Ravanan being a Veenai Vidhwan. In the movie Agasthiyar too, Raavanan (I think Manohar) competes with Agasthiyar (Sirgazhi) in a singing competition.
The song is Vendriduven unnai vendriduven. I heard stories that both Sirgazhi and TMS competed with each other in singing the song and according to the story, Ravanan is supposed to lose, but TMS's did not want to lose! So, eventually, they made Ravanan's veenai string to snap, thus losing to Agasthiyar!

- In a thread on Kaviyarasu Kannadasan, R. Mahendra Raj has written a fascinating set of articles on the great lyricist. Egged on by other stalwarts like Manisegaran and Saravanan, a great discussion ensued, thanks to the contributions of Sankar, Geeth, SK, Subbu, Ramki and others. Mahendra Raj's posts make an engrossing read, and was appreciated by one and all. He is a wealth of information on the Kaviyarasar, and we are grateful to him for sharing it with newtfmpage. The posts share a story that few others can write-up. Kudos to Mahendra Raj. Read on here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/lyricist/kannadasan_raj.html
- From his post:
Talking about spirituality Kaviarasar encompassed all religions as evidenced by his award winning song "Ganga Enbathu Raman Nadhi"
But in person Kaviarasar was a devout Krishna bakthar. Although belonging to the Chettiar community who reckons Lord Murugan as their deity Kaviarasar begged to be different. No wonder the community shunned him during the early stages! That is a different story which I will narrate later.
In early 1972 Kaviarasar made preparations for his third (or fourth?) daughter's wedding. The date was set and barely three days into the wedding he was in a dilemna. Someone who promised to advance the money for the wedding disappointed Kaviarasar at the eleventh hour. Poor chap, it was during these type of situations he will cry like an innocent child. The good Lord had heard him cry. Continue to read fans.
He had an appointment to write songs for the film "Deivam", a Devar banner.Kaviarasar will put aside all his personal problems when it comes to work. He dictated the song "Marutha Malai Maamaniye Murugaya Devarin Kulam Kaatkum Velayya". When the assistant read back the dictation Chinnappa Devar who was in the adjoining room quickly came out and asked that the song be read out again. He was immensely impressed with the line "Devarin Kulam Kaatkum Velayya" as though it was meant to him. Immediately he gave Kaviarasar 1 lakh for the song and also gave him permission to make use of his personal wedding hall for his daughter's wedding.
Kaviarasar was dumbfounded as the song was written spontaneously and that too in praise of Lord Muruga. Nevertheless the money came as a saviour and the wedding was well conducted. As Kaviarasar was entering the hall he heard his own song "Poo Mudipaal" (Nenjirikkum Varai) being played in the gramaphone. Later he reflected that although he is a Krishna bakthar nevertheless it was Lord Murugan's grace that saved him from an embarassing situation. He understood the divinely drama. The good Lord came to his aid through one of His forms.
In the late eighties I happen to hear an interview over the radio whilst driving but I could'nt make out clearly whom Kunnakudi was referring to due to transmission signal interferences. But later I concluded taht Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan talked about Kaviarasar. The story goes like this. Kunnakudi likes to blow his own 'trumpet'about his ability to handle the violin to his terms(pardon the pun).It was at Devar's studio that both he and Kaviarasar got into a friendly argument over each other's talents. It was agreed that for each stanza Kunnakudi plays Kannadhasan must immediately pen suitable lyrics before he could go on to the next stanza. Thats how the birth of the song "Marutha Malai Maamaniye" was born.Music for this film is by Kunnakudi. Remember, the variations of the concluding stanza in that song? Kunnakudi purposefully made it difficult so that Kannadhasan will lose out.But the reverse took place. Kunnakudi said in the interview that after this banter he put down his violin and embraced Kannadhasan admitting that his violin lost to the latter's pen. It was at this time when Devar heard the commotion and came out. The rest of the story is as above. I am still perplexed that for a self-praise man like Kunnakudi would he have surrendered just like that? But thats what he said, in the interview.
The first story was told by Kannadhasam himself in one of his books. But if the second story by Kunnakudi is to be taken seriously than I must say Kaviarasar was all humble as he could have easily boasted about this triumph over Kunnakudi. But he did'nt. Thats Kannadhasan.

This is the song, the essence of everything from spirituality to reality in Tamilnadu! The ethos can be felt in this one song above all others. Tiruchi loganathan' voice, the tune, fervor, lyrics, composer all great ones come together in this one incredible devotional song.

The brighas between the higher notes towards the end of this song is quite similar to that in "Sivasankari" rendered by Seerkazhi, which was made the SOTD earlier. Both these guys were incredible. Its like they had a couple of vibrators positioned around the vocal chord :-)

maruthamalai mamaniye - a great song and a great place. it has given me a soothing moments whenever i had visited it. the glimpse of coimbatore city from the temple is a treat. steep. comes back memories when we used to do the climbing in one go (no pause) - is it 958 steps ? the last 50 was difficult. its a visual treat to see peacocks in natural atmosphere. everytime we visit this kundru this song immediately comes to our mind - reengaramidum paattu.
interestingly, theres a stone at the entrance with the message that this road (or steps) was inaugurated by MGR. its also said that the entire lighting from down to the temple was donated by MGR. great song bringing back sweet memories.
