Rahman is very bad at Backgroud Music right from day one. He is surviving in India because of his song albums not because of his BGM.
Hollywood wants BGM not Song albums. He cannot make it there.

Rahman cannot succeed in Hollywood for the simple fact that he uses loops and bases his music on songs that are famous in western circles. When he has to compete with the likes of John William etc, he surely doesn't stand a hope in hell!

Even if he munnerifies or atleast tries to do that then all of us will full his legs to the bottom.

Hello MR.HARIHARAN..PERRHAPS U DONT KNOW WHAT THE WORLD IS SAYING ABOUT ARR.
STOP LIVING IN A WELL AND WAKE UP TO THE REALITIES..
FROM LAGAAN REVIEW IN COMPUSERVE.
"A.R. Rahman should have been in line for the Oscar for his stunning,
original music, which adds intensity to the fierce
conflict between the Europeans and the Asians"

Hi Bose:
Its my opinion !. I am not asking everyone to agree with me. Lagaan songs are good not the BGM and again its my opinion. Compare to Raaja ARR is piece of s**t!. Again its my opinion.
You cannot compete with Hollywood. Come on Bose. Reality ???? Well ?? What you talking about ?.
Can you compare Lagaan with Hollywood ?. No Way !. Can hollywood sit for 3 and 1/2 hours to watch a movie. ha ha ! Come on !!!.

Hariharan,
if you can get it in your head that rahman was asked to compose such kind of music for lagaan. And lagaan being 3:40 hrs is nothing to do with ARR.
Such a situation of ARR composing for Hollywood movie has not happened before.
And you commenting on something that has never happened with such certainity is illogical to say the least. ridiculous to say the most.
Even if you extrapolate you can extrapolate that "he impressed N people here He may impress 2N people there" thats sounds reasonable .
But yours is plain bigoted. Its not an opinion but basically inanity. you obviously have no proof

Hariharan I agree with you. ARR will never suceed in Hollywood. Maybe Tamilians are too stupid or just too lazy to notice that he is Heavily Inspired by western music, but in Hollywood, he will not be able to get away with this cheap rip off trick.

but do you know it will take 2 mins for him to get inspired from Indian composers and impress Hollywood.

Ragumaan and Hariharan,
your points are fair....but dont kid yourself by sayin Rahmans music will b unsuccessful in hollywood- can i draw your attention to a soundtrack like Sangamam....classical in nature. Rahman does get a lot of his influence from Western music- i mean he studied it properly, and its the most popular strand of music around the world- but, Rahman has a mix. and thats wat the fans in the West like to see.wether u chose to beleive this or not is your own decision, but thats fact. let me remind you, that Andrew Lloyd Webber went lookin for Rahman, not the other way. the selective clips of Bombay Dreams that have been heard by the public in the U.K, are lovin it, and eagerly wait for the whole soundtrack- those are just facts......let the music speak like it has for the last ten years, and then we'll see.
thanx
Sam

I believe ARR is a thousand steps ahead of many 'popular' contemporary musicians/music groups in the west(WCM excluded).
Saying that 'Rahman cannot be successful in hollywood' is premature baseless speculation. It is no secret that BGM is not his strong point, but one has to wait and see what his hollywood venture(yes, in case he is offered) is going to be like. He is not to be underestimated. It's also worth considering why a hollywood film maker approaches ARR in the first place.

Bad news for you hari.
This is what I got from ARR fan group.
---------
Columbia Pictures woos AR Rahman
Having caught the eye of London with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical
Bombay Dreams, AR Rahman now looks set to travel to Hollywood. Rahman
is currently negotiating on two offers from Hollywood companies,
including Columbia Pictures, to compose music for their forthcoming
films. Though he is yet to decide on either of them, it now seems only
a matter of time before Rahman becomes the first Indian composer to
break into the world of Hollywood music.

Done tell me IR and make my blood boil.
[ I(We) will accept that it is IR, only if IR can take a copy of his successful works like "Kaasi" and "Naatupura paatu" and show it to the likes of James Cameroon and Ron Howard and get a nod. ]

Your comments about IR are as 'tasteless' as Hariharan's line about ARR. Now I am starting to understand why many good DFers prefer to wean themselves out of these forums.

Rahman has a fair chance of succeeding because
1) He has a knack of good marketing skills - In TFM page every one accepts ARR has raised to this position partly because of marketing effort.
2) ARR has good flexibility - this is been his greatest asset. Most of the time, the improvisation from singers, musicians and technicians have made wonders. This quality is missing fortunately or unfortunately for IR otherwise, his symphony would have been released lo..ng back.
3) ARR gives lot of emphasis of presentation quality. This is one of the key requirements of HR. Examle before ARR how many of us know the contribution of Sound Engineer- Nenjai thootu sollungal- Sound Engineer name is even printed in cassettes. Many times this has improved the quality of the music though core of it may be crap.
4) Though I am a strong IR bakthan, let us wish ARR to succeed in his HW attempt..

hariharan & Raju:
Just make us a promise. If ARR makes to HW, will you come back to this exact thread and post what's your opinion.
Ofcourse, I cannot expect an apology, nor I want it. But, I just want to check whether you are amoung those bayandhangoli's who make a nasty comment and never turn back to this forum for life.
I have already stated that until every thing comes out well I do not want to celebrate this. At the same time I do not want to neglect this news as just a marketing gimmick.
But...but...don't forget to come back. let me see, do you have "nennjile manja soru".

I am here to substantiate my claim that ARR will never make it in Hollywood. It is not a personal attack against ARR solely but I feel that no Indian MD can succeed In HW. This is because the quality of music expected in HW is nothing like that of Indian Film Music. ARR may be a top selling artist but when put amongst Western musicians nobody will stand a chance, except maybe IR and even that is debatable.

>>>except maybe IR and even that is debatable.
Now I come to understand you better.
(unnecessary mention of IR....you have disturbed the hornet's nest).
God, I don't know how can you talk about some thing that has not yet happened.
In the last fifty years, no body ever dreamt even in their dreams that one MD from down douth will take India by storm. But , it happended and no body knows what will happen in hollywood.
But, my question is why are you so negative about it. tell me where will you keep your face if that really happens.
See, if he succeeds then it will do a great good to IMF and Indian music altogether.
If he fails or gets no chance, then too he will till remain as ARR who has taken india by storm, when any MD in the history of India have done it.
Crossing Vindyas this way or that way is such a daunting task. Many have perished. Those who had facial beauty and arm mighty have only been able to do a couple there.
Music wise, nobody has ever made such heights other that ARR.
