"Mellisai Mannar" "Akila Ulaga IsaiChakravarthy" MSV is undoubtedly a person who has served tamil film music industry with the greats around.
Imagine doyens like Gemini SS Vasan, AVM Chettiar, Nagi Reddiar in the production side, great composers like G Ramanathan, CR Subburam, SM Subbiah Naidu, SV Venkatrama Iyer, KV Mahadevan as contemporaries, Udumalai Narayanakavi, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Marudhakasi, Kannadasan etc., around, when MS Viswanathan succeeded a new Era of Film music, with competent challenging singers like Trichy Loganathan, CS Jayaraman, Seerkazhi Govindarajan, TM Soundarrajan, PB Srinivas and other singers like P Susheela, Jikki, LR Eswari, Jamunarani and others.
It was film industry then and not called film business as at present. Strict quality control was being enforced and a variety was given by unique identity for each song be it tune, lyric or singerwise. Remember not everyone can become a producer those days and there were not many films numberwise. There was restricted film productions with more knowledgeable technicians. Despite all this, the melodies composed by MS Viswanathan alone and with TK Ramamurthy rose above all challenges and are still ringing even today.
It is a fact that each song sounds with a pep of a new song till date. I want all our unbiassed fans and friends to post their opinions about his melodies.(NO FANATICS PLEASE)
Tell me, if Iam wrong, when I say :
"The name of the singer could be identified with the song of MSV ( although making it TMS song, Sirkazhi song, PBS song, Suseela Eswari song etc)" - You cant do it most of the songs after 1980s.
"You can totally hum a BGM, sing the song with the BGM melody and rejoice" - Even this was absent in songs after 1980s, especially with other Music Directors, though they are great.
"Number of movies worked alone dont count for excellence in music"
"To compose a song with a variety in the tune, excellent rhythm changes, newer orchestral arrangements with a boon entry in the then TFM scene,(Imagine Puthiya paravai -Western, Aayirathil oruvan - Karnan -Hindusthani etc) was a revolution"
The Great master did it! Undoubtedly he needs to be appreciated.

Hi Pandu,
Well Said. MSV - Mellisai Siraka Vandthavar.
We can say so much about the songs. Nowadays melody is nothing but singing slow. There are good fast songs with great melody. Some examples are,
Yaathum Oore Yaavarum Kellir
Kaatrukenna Veli Kadalukenna Moodi
Nee Vara Vendum Enru Ethir Paarthean
Pachaik Killi Muthuch Charam
Pon Makal Vandthaal Porul Kodi Thandthaall
..................
I hope others will continue the list.

Now elections nearing the scene every nook and corner has a stage playing revolutionary songs tuned by MSV:
1.Vetriyai Naalai Sarithira sollum - Sirkazhi
2. Neenga nalla irukkonum - Sirkazhi,SJ,TMS
3. Moondrezhuthil en moochirukkum -TMS
4. Thaai mel aanai - TMS etc etc.,
Do you have any such songs for the present day heros done by the current MDs (exception of Muthu, Padayappa etc) The revolutionary songs composed for heros during 80s by other music directors were so so and did not catchup with the spirit.
I read a news that SPB could not sing and referred Unnimenon for a song like 'Vaangayya vathiyarayya' in a Napolean starrer which even he didnt sing finally for some reason or other. How do the MDs decide that these so soft voices can go well with such revolutionary message songs? Wont it sound like telling secret! MGR-MSV team had a better sense in choosing conveying voices.

How's this song anyway related to 'revolution'? It was written when a great political personality was ill, and was ever since used by the affiliated political parties. Not because it was "revolutionary".
All the songs you listed are being used now, because the current state of political affairs in TN is so pathetic that they have to resort to MGR and ANNA thuthi paadalgal to gather crowd. MGR's charisma is still used to attract the vote-bank.
It's the same reason for the 80's "revolutionary" songs not to be so popular; the 80's heroes could not overshadow MGR's mass appeal. Now, don't tell me MGR became popular because of such songs. His was a very well planned career. For that matter, any MD's song composed for him in late 60's and early 70's would have done the job; the key is powerful lyrics and charisma.
Now, for songs in 80's:
1) Koodungal Sevalgale
2) Manitha Manitha Ini Un Vizhigal
3) Erimalai Eppadi Porukkum
4) Unnal Mudiyum Thambi
5) Nanjai undu punjai undu
..........
Except Rajini, none of the hero's in the above songs really persued politics. Even Rajini hasn't fully landed in politics, and you can see marked differences in his songs in the 90's, since that's when he became interested in it; expecially, with no one else to fill the vaccum created by MGR's demise.

that was one song every Rajini fan would love.

Listen to the full song. Dont stop short with the pallavi alone. It depicts equality among labourers. Any MD would not have succeeded the way MSV succeeded with such songs. Such revolutionary songs were only on in the movie and it was a success along with other melody and duets.
Asareeri - The songs you have listed has revolutionary lyrics, but I dont want to comment on the singers or MDs for its lethargic reception from the listeners. It is their choice.
Dont forget to add MSVs hit for Rajini - "My name is Billaa" which depicted a hero worship status. Had MSV been used more for Rajini films, with more number of such songs, 1989 TN elections would have seen talking politics gloriously.
Post anything! MGR-Sivaji, Gemini-SSR-Muthuraman, Jaishankar-Ravichandran, all had a variety of hits with MSV. What charisma did others have like MGR to be compared.
MSV is the man of the match, in tfm.

"Pokkiriki Pokkiri Raja" was a hotcake for Rajini fans in 1980. You right in saying that even if it is one song, that particular revolutionary song will be a hit amongs the duets! OOf..imagine MGR and Sivaji hits..OOOps!
Pandu, G Raghavan, vtv and others -
where is the question of listing MSV songs as 70s, 80s or 90s when they have been uniformly ALIVE and listened to every day either in Radio, TV, A mellisai cutcheri or even in our homes. Please note - "Pazhasu endrum Pudhusu!".

Amar, we all know pandu, ragavan and all others are the same from your IP address. Dont make a fool of yourself, you are no more than disgracing MSV, being such a desparate emotional fan.
Every communist/worker union meetings still uses the manidha manidha, yerimalai eppadi porukkum songs. Now, Dont tell me thats why they loose elections. There is no match for those songs before or after. There were text book songs or self propaganda songs, but never with such a ambience. Dont be such a loser talking in difernt names.
MSV has always been, great and will continue to be one. With or without sick fans like you.
Sivaji used 75% MSV, why didnt he win even a single MLA seat?.

Cathay/Amar,
>> The songs you have listed has revolutionary lyrics, but I dont want to comment on the singers or MDs for its lethargic reception from the listeners.
You are not getting the point. In the 80's having revolutionary lyrics did not automatically ensure their popularity among the masses, because the heroes were not inclined towards politics in such a big way as MGR; they were not *repeatedly* broadcast in public places/meetings.
>> MGR-Sivaji, Gemini-SSR-Muthuraman, Jaishankar-Ravichandran, all had a variety of hits with MSV. What charisma did others have like MGR to be compared.
we are talking about 'revolutionary' songs; not hit songs. Can you name one Sivaji/Jaishankar song from that's used in election times? On the other hand, I've heard MGR-JJ *duets* used in election campaigns. What does this tell of charisma?
You were commenting on singers. Do you consider 'Ondre kulam endru paaduvom' a popular song? This has been sung nicely by KJY.
"Pokkiriki Pokkiri Raja" a revolutionary song??! Am I missing the sarcasm here? Or, are you criticising yourself? ( for your convenience, I complete the pallavi: '... pakkathile pattile roja. ennaikkum neethanadi enakku pondaatti!'. Manohara vasanam kaettadhu pola ore pullarippa irukku enakku! :-)

Billa? Hero? I think he had been a child molestor-killer-criminal, who had been hanged...Rajini-Balaji-MSV combo did irrepairable damage to culture & taste of TN by eulogising a brute:-((

Billa is remake from Don...
so amitab takes the lead (apart from being in Cong-I) in spoiling the nation.
it is similar to nayagan or thalapathi where anti-heros are shown as great saints.
Infact in billa- "good" rajni takes the place to capture the bad guy... but in the nayagan and thalapathi..mmmmmm...so as per your logic please add manirathanam, kamal, rajni, IR, p.c.sriram and few others to your list. :((

kk, fliflo,- This is not the forum meant for sick fanatics. Discuss the greatness and dont compare.
Touch your heart and tell me how often you are listening to 80s hits of other MDs NOW! Leave alone IR! Even todays' release film hits disappear as soon as the next film is released. This is an accepted truth by you guys!
Asareeri- I think you fellows are the same monoacting group with technically different IPs to blindly promote an MD and not music.
Sivaji starrer - songs like Bharatha vilas, songs like Thanganggaley Naalai Thalaivargale, Kappalotiya thamizhan film songs (! great tunes matching on Bharathis lyrics)etc., and Jaishankar films like Nenjukku neethi songs, songs like Yaanayin Balam ethile, are still blasting political speakers for your kind information.
MSVs music is eternal and uncomparable with any MD FROM ANY PART OF THE WORLD. HE IS ONE MD WITH A BROAD SPECTRUM OF VARIETY IN HIS MUSIC AND A WIDE RANGE OF SONGS TO HIS CREDIT. NO DOUBT HE IS THE FATHER AND BASEMENT OF FILM LIGHT MUSIC who contrasted the trends set by G.Ramanathan, Subburaman etc.,.

Guys,
I have the following response.
I consider MSV as the greatest composer for the following reasons, with due respects for other contempories incl. IR-
1. He is the most creative when it comes to the tunes. It is very difficult to imagine such compositions.
2. His variery of music is too broad, covering all emotions and all situations.
3.He extracted the best out of the voices.
4.He composed all such breat songs, without compromising on the lyrics, rather, enlightening the lyrics further.
5.I am not sure , how much knowledge he had in classical music. But, his imagination and interpretation of classical (music) ragas were unique.
We can build a lot of data for each of the above points. I suggest that we take the great songs of MSV, as we feel and discuss on the forum. Any leads please!
Jeyaram
