I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Pannaipurathu was produced by Jaya Chakravarthy, right? Thanks for the MD correction (very IRish song, methinks!) It is a fine song by VJ-MVD.
Digression:
A few weeks ago, on the erstwhile "multicultural channel" (read:non-white and eastern european programming!!) I chanced on a few tamizh songs (small mercies have never seemed so big!!) and there was a duet featuring Vijayakanth and a parumanana pudhu mugam. No details were provided, but the song went:
"Kunguma Manjalukku Indru Thaan Nalla Naal" (??) and it was sung by SJ-SPB (MD: IR??). It was a nice melody...any details?
End digression.

Yes Naaz,
Jayasarathi Enterprises' Pannaipurathu Pandavargal- 1982 was produced by Jaya Chakravarthi. It was directed by B Lenin.
The song 'kunguma majalukku indru thaan' ( Vijayakanth & Kasturi)was by KJY/SJ. Music by IR. Film: Enga Mudhalaali- 1993.

vengayam,
OISG called me just now. Referred your query to him--he reminded me of one more Karthik-Ambika starrer- Arthamulla Aasaigal- 1985. I haven't seen the film, but OISG avers Karthik played a smuggler in it! I recall that Babu Maharaja was the director, but no clue as to the songs.

Imagine the quality of the copy, one that makes KJY sound like SPB :-) Kasturi looked orey uncomfortable with all the affection being showered on her by the revolutionary artiste :-) I only remember that one song from the entire programme!!
What's with the exclamation after "karthik played a smuggler in it!"? :-) Ponder these eligibles:It could have been Murali, Mohan, Shankar, Sivakumar (exasperation plus!:-))Pandiyan, Pandiyarajan, Sarat Babu, Pratap Pothen, ...
Makes Karthik seem like a casting coup already, yeah? :-)

vengayam, how well I know that nama nama kudaichal feeling ;) Well-- I thought and thought and finally recalled a song that I think fits the bill ( Arthamulla Aasaigal, Rain, Karthik, Ambika-- MD: GA?)- it goes like 'yamma yamma summa paarkaathey, ada ange inge kaiya vekkathe' (MV/SJ). VJ too has a song in the film-- remarkable pallavi-- 'Kutchatheevil kai vechippaaru'-- defintely a smuggler's story!!
Naaz: that exclamation mark is for the joy at finally identifying the film!

I fully understood your joyous exclamation! (But couldn't pass on the opportunity to play it up! How you say - Summa Thamash? :-)
Just heard Manikka Maamani Malaiyil this morning. What a composition! VJs opening with "Poo Mugaththil..." and the lines "Iraiva Enakku Vilakku..." A many-splendoured thing, made for many more listenings!

Saravanan,
Yes Babu Maharaja and Arthamulla aasaigal it is. I also got mixed up with Katcaathivu &this yamma yamma song. Now hopefully life will go on.... !
Thanks a kodi for you & OISG!
naaz,
Kasthuriya theriyallaya? Of course it is a great song -- but if it sounded like SPB the copy should have really thenji poi irukkanum.

Hi Saravanan/Naaz/vanifan,
Do any one of you have the song 'Oora thirutha oru pillai' from Vandikkaran Magan?. If so, can you please upload the same?.
Thanks in advance,

Hi VJ & 70s TFM fans,
pardon me if you know this already. Thenisai's Oldies radio channel has a pretty good collection of music from the 60s & 70s. They just played "Gangai nadhi oram" by VJ.

Finally managed to get it! VJ's first song in tfm. 'Or idam unnidam' from Veetukku Vandha Marumagal.
Though VJ first sang for the film 'Thaayum Seyum' the film was never released. She was first heard in tfm in Veetukku Vandha Marumagal.
Sri Navaneetha Films' Veetukku Vandha Marumagal-1973 was scripted by VC Guganathan. It starred AVM Rajan, Latha, Muthuraman and others. Music was by Shankar-Ganesh.

So there was a munodi for Naal Nalla Naal...I had not heard Oridam Unnidam at all. But now that I have, I am once again glad for the VJ-TMS duets. There is so much LIFE in these songs by the duo - joie de vivre and a flung-back casualness that makes the air twist and shout :-)
Thanks for sharing the file with us.

I have to check your gifts at the egroup. I will do so sometime today (I gave it a quick glance, and I know I am in for 20 minutes (at least) of class-ism :-))

All, here’s a link to a rare VJ song:
http://www.sinhalajukebox.org/smi_root/disk1/dir03/Khemadasa01.smi
‘Kaaladevan leelaigal’ by SPB/VJ, from the unreleased film Veena Movies’ Vasanthathil Oru Vaanavil (Stg: Pratap & Radhika). The record cover gave the year of manufacture as 1981. Another song in the film is ‘Manathil podum’ by SJ. Music by the famed Sri Lankan MD Khemadasa.

Kaaladevan Leelaigal is a find. I had not heard this song before (wasn't clued into Radio Ceylon for a better part of my life in Madras :-(() Thanks for sharing this rare file with us.
Who was the director for VOV? Wonder why the film never saw the light of day...?
Yesterday I heard the VJ-MVD duet Abishekam Alangaram Archchanai Arambam (what alliteration, you say? :-))
I've always found the song to be peppy and full of verve. The "ch" sound - as enunciated by the singers - is an interal metronome in the song (IMO). Reminded me of:
"Nee Vennmalligai, Thaen Un Punnagai, Un Peyarai Uchchariththukkondu Indha Vandu, Pudhu Nilavu Medaiyil Kavidhai Paduthey Indru..." (Veetukku Oru Kannagi? SG?)
I do miss the music of SG! ( distinct even when it was derived!)

Saravanan - Neel D - Osho - CV - OISG - Suresh - Balaji et al:
I have been informed of two open slots for Rhythm's India (CiTR): Feb 8th and Feb 22nd (Feb 15th is undecided and might become available) and would greatly (and gratefully) appreciate your input - some original (yet accessible) ideas for programming:
I am more inclined to do a 70s-80s Hindi and a 70s -80s Tamizh segment (one slot each.) For Tamizh, I was thinking along MGR-Sivaji-MSV lines...but that's not written in stone.
Please share your views - and remember - a decided programme will (for Tamizh) depend mostly on available MP3s, which you must commit to search, steal, find, and send! :-)
Thanks!
(I will have to confirm by Wednesday. I hope that's enough time to get our heads together?)

Hi, Recently we went to Kukke Subrahmanya, a temple town in Karnataka. 6 hours drive from Bangalore. Earlier I took some cassettes for en-route booster. Asked for recent ones on devotional category. I was advised to buy one on “KoLaru padhikam”, sung by Vani Jayaram. I hesitated to take it, since I had already one released by a different artist. But on continued persuading of the shop-wala, I purchased that too.
After listening, I said to me ‘Had I let it pass, it should have been a known slaughter’. It was an extremely pleasant album released by Subam audio in Nov-2003. Music was anchored by Veeramani Kannan.
Kolaru padhikam is in praise of Lord Shiva, composed by Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi. The very first part of it is to pray to get HIS grace to get rid of the bad effects of the Nava-grahas.
Side A has Veyuru thoLi pangan (this is the Kolaru padhikam) & Aindezhuthu sivanamam, whereas Side B has Harahara siva siva & Mandhiram Avadhu neeru.
Chorus was very powerfully used in all compositions. VJ had brought out the devotion with tons of depth and feeling. Clarity in words is another winning baton for her.
No jazzy instruments were used, but still you get what melody you want. If you get this album, please take it and enjoy.

Naaz,
Thanks for remembering me as a source of trivia! But is that a TV programme slot that you're talking about?
One tidbit which MSV keeps mentioning in most interviews: He was under tremendous pressure to compose good tunes for 'naaLai namathE', as 'yaadOn ki baaraat' songs were still being hummed by every Tamil movie buff! As MGR was known for putting pressure on MD's, MSV requested him with folded hands " Sir, neenga recording-kku varadheenga! I am already under heavy pressure!" MGR agreed, but being the stickler that he was, he used to stand stealthily outside the recording studio, get satisfied and go away! [though I wonder (going by his status in 1975)whether it was possible at all for MGR to go anywhere stealthily!]. Needless to add, till today, I enjoy 'naaLai namathE' songs!
For Sivaji, MSV gave the Tamil version of 'roop tera mastaana', in 'sivagaamiyin selvan' as 'eththanai azhagu kottik kidakkuthu, eppadi manathaik katti izhukkuthu! ammammaa udalellaam nadunguthu! aanaalum achchamthaan thadukkuthu!" This exceptionally racy song was dwarfed only because it was (unfortunately!)compared with the larger- than- life original from 'aaraadhanaa'!
Even the Tamil version of the SD Burman's song as " ethaRkum oru kaalam uNdu poRuththiru magaLE! inbaththilum thunbaththilum siriththiru magaLE!" had its own charm in MSV's voice!
