I haven't watched any of the movies you mentioned, but I remember that a whole lot of movies with Sivaji flopped in the early/mid 80s. You could say he reached rock-bottom and started digging :(
People were shaking their heads in disbelief when he danced with one of the "sex bombs" (was it jayamalini or anuradha?) in naam iruvar namakku iruvar.
Then came Mudhal Maritathai in 1985. The first few weeks the theatres were empty. Then by word of mouth the movie became popular and Sivaji's career had a rebirth.

How can people forget Thirpu, Kalthoon, Raktapaasam, Kannan Vanthan? For that matter even Rishimoolam was a third rate movie. Ilayaraja music saved Deepam. MSV was too good in Annan Oru Koil and Andaman Kadali. There was another "Iru Methaigal" Sivaji and Prabhu. They could have named it as Iru Pannigal :-). Was he the same guy who did Parasakti, Manohara, Kattabomman, Navaratri, Andha Naal, Thooku Thooki and many more such? Nevertheless, Tamil films will be grateful to this wonderful actor of 50s and 60s. Even Thevar Magan he did great.

OISG,
Your list is pretty biased.
Dr.Siva - There is nothing antisocial about this movie
Ilaya Thalaimurai
Rojavin Raja
Dharmaraja -- I don't know what is antisocial in this movie.
Dhramam Enge?
General Chakravarthy -- I don't know what is antisocial in this movie. Again its a family subject
Pilot Premnath -- This is a family story with some twists about "who is the black sheep"
Ratha pasam
Vetrikku oruvan
Uthaman -- This is not antisocial at all
About other movies, I have not seen them and so can't comment. If you look at the ratio of good versus bad ones from Sivaji he probably enjoyes the best percentages in the industry anytime.
Even, in the midst of some crap movies like L.D.Rajakannu he did not fail to deliver good ones like Kalthoon, Deepam, Thrisulam, RishiMoolam and a few others.
He is unparalled in tamil movie industry. People who are not even 50% talented as Sivaji claim that they are heir to him (Kamalahasan assumes so). Acting has to be inborn and not improvised.

Acting has to be instantaneous, inborn and not improvised. Sivaji showed how he can perform for all characters by even underplaying (Mudhal Mariyathai) dependending on the director's expectations. The only comparison I can draw is Illayaraja who delivers instantaneously as the situation demands without having to depend on samples and stuff

OISG - here you go. a better TFM connection for you. Maybe this IR-ARR reference can be newtfmpage's very own Godwin's law.
(Godwin's law - usenet groups jargon, which states that "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one". now we have a similar one for newtfmpage threads.)

Theerpu is much better move. It ran very well.
Rish Moolam is also a moderate hit.
Dr.Siva is 100dat movie.
Pilot Premnath ran more than a year in Colombo.
In fact Santhippu is 175 day movie
I don't see any anti social thoughts in those movies.
Rest of the movies, I agree.

Sriram,
My comparison was between Sivaji and IR only. I don't know why you assumed ARR (may be he uses samples). What I meant is unlike modern MDS who need to listen to many songs, refer to samples etc, improvise for many days, IR comes to the studio without any preconceptions and composes on the spot for the situation described.
Sivaji and IR has similar talents w.r.t. delivering as the situation warrants without any or much home work. The same cannot be said of any other artists in the industry

I think i need to clarify on "anti-social" -I feel all these movies are crimes against TF fans and Sivaji fans in particular unleashed by D Yoganand,KVijyan & Co.In some movies Sivaji s "Anyonam" with KRV reached "Aniyayam" stage like General Chakravarthy.
Saravanan
Sangili - It should have been banned under NPT as it created a "chain" reaction--bringing in Prabhu to Tamil films.
BUT a thought on these films make to think about the other side of Sivaji-Deiva Magan, gnana oLi,Rangoon Radha,VKB,Karnan.Sivaji is like Ganges....at times you see dead bodies floating and almost dirty at the fag end....but Ganges from Gangotri to till Bay of Bengal.
Any disc cannot be complete with IR/ARR here.IR needs to do lot of explaining as well for his Rajastan,Kattapanjayatu,Poovarasan etc.ARR for his Vandicholai chinrasu,Pudhiya Mannargal .
If this discussion leads to the greater works of Sivaji ,I would be pleased.

bb, Fatwa withdrawn & I nominate you for this year's Noble piece prize!( Pls somebody do not post it is Nobel & peace!!)
Udaya,
you are free to your opinion and i am free to express mine but do horses sing:-)
what with all the trouble with our server I got left out of all the Rani Padmini sparring. The onlY Rani padmini that I know of ( and Saravanan & OISG perhaps) kicked the bucket under tragic circumstances the wanton victim of some MCP! But that is neither here nor there.

Ignore prev post I do not know what is happening here. My post in SOTD has been duplicated here.My great post has bit the dust. the summary was I agree Viswaroopam, chiranjeevi & Mohana punnagai were great duds but the pilots & generals should be exonerated.
But one movie which i shudder even today is ironically not so much for sivaji's performance but that of his co-star who had out laughed ,out cried and out shouted the N .T. Name the movie & the star for a year's subscription of" vengayam's vetti pecchu -viraivil ethir paarungal!"

Dharmam Enge came in 1972, after three successful movies Raaja, Gna Oli and Pattikaadaa Pattanamaa.
Actually the story is good, the screen play was poor (A C Thirulogachander).
Normally, in a mannar-makkal film, the hero would fight till the end against the 'Sarvaadhikaari' and capture the power in the end.
In Dharmam Enge, capturing power ends in the intervel itself. After that, the King (hero) appoints some people in key posts and does not give posts to one of his friends (Muthuramam) on the basis that he is not capable of ruling. This makes Muthuraman revolts against the king and finally the king overcomes that too.
A good story in those days, but screen play was very poor. Has a good song - TMS & PS - Palliyaraikkul vandha pulli mayile (MSV)

Ahaa! Antha naaL njapakam!
The joke was that in those days Sivaji developed permanent rosy cheeks. Know why? Because as he was biking around in his purple and mauve coats, the collars (which were half as big as elephant ears in those bell bottom days, if you know what I mean) kept flapping his cheek with the wind.
Two things about those trousers he wore, god bless his designer. Since he was wearing them at almost chest level (in a sad attempt at paunch-control), it was said that the comparison of him with Marlon Brando in the local press was getting close. Our man was the "Maarla Pant'o".
The other joke was - What would Sivaji do when his chest itched? Simple, pull his zipper down. It was also rumoured that he had a second secret zippper much below this one for his ablutions. Look, this is getting worse.. I don't know what's getting over me, my daughters are looking at me as though I've gone insane..
Anyway, after a lousy day at work, the very mention of epics such as LDR and YY has be going nuts. Anyone from Chennai game for a retrospective of SGs anti-social movies only, you have an over-eager sponsor...
