this song was not a duet. Jaiganesh seduces an innocent Sridevi. Sridevi is young and innocent and is almost hypnotised in the song. She loses her senses and is ravished by sridevi. That is why this song is not a duet.

I still remember that this used to be one of the "banned" songs on TV for much of my childhood. But it was also one of the most prominent of the SPB-IR classics with Kannadasan thrown in for a good measure. A very haunting song with wonderful highs and lows that seem to be just what the situation requires.
ONly grievance, Id rather hear the song a million times than seeing it once. It isnt a great song to watch, but then that doesnt take anything away from this wonderful collaboration of IR,SPB and Kannadasan.

This is one helluvaa melody from IR-SPB combo.
There are other lovely songs from this non hit movie too. Ponnaaram Poovaaram(SPB solo )
2. One of IR-SJ combo acheivements(Thamtha theemda aadum ullam paadum)- song with female voices as instruments on Mohanam raaga. IR has mentioned this song as one of his favourites in an interview for Kalki magazine, years ago.
3. Kalaiyo selaiyo(another wonderful solo melody from Jayachandran.

bb- Here’s the story of Vattathukkul Sathuram-1978 (in brief!)
Anu and Malathi are inseparable friends from childhood in a village. Malathi (Sumitra) has a mother (CK Saraswathi) and a mechanic brother (Srikanth). Anu (Latha) has only a mother, the identity of her father being unknown. Hence the village folk despise Anu and her mother. Malathi’s mother scolds her for being Anu’s friend, but the two girls are inseparable. They grow older.
Anu secretly falls in love with Malathi’s brother, but he has only contempt for her. She asks him to meet her in the night in the outskirts of the village- but that fool informs his mother of this! The mother is enraged, and calling the entire village folk, goes to the spot and thrashes Anu. To make Anu’s cup of woes complete, her mother ends her life, unable to bear this shame. Poor Anu!
Meanwhile, Malathi’s brother finds a suitor for Malathi- the proposed bridegroom is a mechanic, a person whom Malathi thoroughly hates. Moreover, she wants to pursue her studies, but she is helpless. Taking a sudden decision, Anu and Malathi run away to Madras. In the big bad city, they are robbed of their bag and somehow find their way to Anu’s aunt, who is a small-time actress (wonderful cameo by Nadigaiyar Thilagam Savithri). The aunt too is unable to help them financially.
Anu promises that somehow she will make Malathi study. But how?? The last day for paying the fees draws near. Left with no other option, Anu becomes a cabaret dancer, and then slowly falls into the world’s oldest profession- all for her friend!
When Malathi finds out about Anu, she is horrified- and the man Malathi wants to marry (Saratbabu) insists that she give up her friendship with Anu, if he is to marry her. Anu commits suicide, so that her friend may lead a good life.
A highly unusual story- dealing with the rare subject of friendship between two girls. Many films have come out based on friendship between men, but never between two females.
The film is memorable for two reasons- An excellent performance by Latha , and a great musical score by IR.
Story by Maharishi and directed by SP Muthuraman. The film had all the songs sung by female voices, and all the songs are truly enchanting. Other songs were the awesome ‘Kaadhalennum Kaviyam’- Jikki, the catchy ‘Aadasonnaarey’- Jency and the haunting ‘Perazhagu meni konden’-SJ.
Coming to this song- it starts off with the two small girls (Baby Indira and Baby Sumathi) singing, and in the course of the song, they grow up to Latha and Sumitra. I am not sure about the child voices, but SJ sings for Latha and BSS for Sumitra.
Good lyrics by Panju Arunachalam.
Itho itho en nenjiley orey paadal
Atho atho en paatiley orey ragam
Kodi nee, malar naan,
Kilai nee, kani naan,
Manam pol vaazhvom thunai nee
SJ: Deepathin oliyaaga oru paadhi naan
Then konda malaraaga oru paadhi nee
BSS:Kaatrinil oliyaaga varuvenadi
Kanavukkul ninaivaaga varuvaayadi
SJ: Nilavukku vaanam, neerukku megam,
Kodikkoru kilai pol thunai neeyamma
Ini vaazhvil nee thaan en sondhamey
BSS: Odamum neerindri odaathamma
Nee sollum vazhi naaney varunenamma
SJ: Thozhamai uravukku eedethamma
Nee sollum mozhi naane ketpenamma
BSS:Unakena naanum enakenna neeyum
Ulaginil vaazhvom ennalume
Ini vaazhvil nee thaan en sondhamey
SJ:Ramanin Guganaaga unai paarkiren
Malathi Anuvaaga naan vaazhgiren
BSS: Iru manam anbaale ondraanadhu
Nesathiley ullam panpaaduthu
SJ: Paravaigal poley parandhiduvom
Ini vaazhvil nee thaan en sondhamey

Vattathukkul Sathuram: 1978
Alavutheenum Arputha Vilakkum: 1979
Natchathiram : 1980 (She appeared as herself in this film)
Azhagu: 1984 (This film was years in the making, and was released after Savithri's death. It had some great songs by GK Venkatesh)

Addendum on 'Pagalil Or Iravu'- The film was directed by IV Sasi and starred Vijayakumar, Sridevi, Seema and Ravikumar.
I remember reading somewhere that the film gained additional notoriety due to a huge hoarding on Anna Salai of Sridevi draped in an actual miniskirt!
The positive aspect was IR's excellent score. 'Ilamaiyenum poonkaatru' was of course, the stand out number. But as Mythila has mentioned, 'Thaamtha dheemtha' is a remarkable song. Reminiscent of the 'Barbershop Quartet' style, voices are all that you can hear in the song- no musical instruments, I think. Bewitching SJ leads, with the chorus voices giving wonderful support. The song is a milestone in the history of tfm. (ARR's 'Raasaathi'-Thiruda Thiruda is another attempt in this style)
Other songs in the film were also marvellous- SPB's 'Ponnaram poovaram', JC's 'Kalaiyo silaiyo' and IR-Jency's 'Thottam konda rasave'.
