>>Rafi was still the voice for majority of the top actors<<
yes, that's for HFM, while
SPB was the voice for many of the top actors, cureently, the actor that SPB has not sang for is "Shaam", big deal !
Ok, Rafi is called "gandharva gaayak", and guess what SPB is known as "Paadum Nila Balu", "Sangeetha Ganga", "Kural isai chakaravarthy", etc

>>There are more Rafi clones than any other singer in India. Everyone wants to sing in his style including SPB who models himself after Rafi.
<<
can u pls tell me their name apart from the girly Sonu Nigam?
I will tell u all the SPB wannabes;
1) Mano
2) Arunmozhi
3) Theres is Telugu singer (not sure of the name)
4) S.N.Surendhar
....
this is very ridiculous to say SPB sings in Rafi's style, come on man, SPB has his unique style, he him self will not accept your statement!

If anyone with a spec of grey matter in head and exposure to music says that i am ready to jump
from the twin towers.

7. Aaj mausam bada baimaan hai
8. Dil kaa bhawar karey pukar
7. Yeh dil deewana hai
8. Aaaja aaja mein hoon pyaar tera

If the above is not versatality then, god knows what u call vers..
Now these are NOT region specific or "grammeeya" or "naattu" songs. A song like "Nain lad jaihain" will qualify for that.
This list has slow + fast songs + quawaali + ghazals and they cover any emotion that a human
being possibly can have and most importantly all were hits.
Most in south have very little idea about ghazals and unforunately with "monotone" singers like
Hariharan doing ghazals, ghazals are losing the magic. Ghazals have the same emotions as most
styles (of songs) but in layman terms there is a filter on sudden peaks. U can draw a remote
parallel with "Pani vizum mallervanam" or "nee daaney yen ponn vasandam" but there is lot more
to it.Under the "restrictions" it is hard to bring in variety and emotions and thats why it is
considered very difficult especially if u have to attract a common man. Rafi could do it- he
played with ghazals like he did with any kind of songs. There is not a single soul(male) that could sing all these randomly selected above numbers with half the effect.
Another crap abundunt here is that "rafi sounds pretty soft". If that really was the case he would have been long forgotten. There have been countless clones and others re-doing his songs that came no where closer.And if that was the case he would not have been the voice for bacchan/dharemendra etc for so long. There is so much fervor,depth,power and expression in 22/23/24 above that i cant imagine anyone else being able to do it. Particularly because there is no one else (male) that can so easily switch between notes while maintaining the voice quality.
He had a melodious tinge that never deteriorates. In song 24 for instance there is the part "kal tumney jo hamsey ....kahaan hai vo vaadey". There is also "dil key jharokon" sng. Any other singer would have to scream to get the similar effect.There are far too many aspects of his singing to compare him with any other male mortal. People like yesudas/spb understand. People who have been forunate to undertand hindi and listen to rafi know what exactly kjy means when he says that if there was someone really gifted it was rafi. Its for the same reasons that mannadey says "rafi is and will always be the best". Mind u when he said this no one was asking him which singer he liked. As a guest manna was being praised and he interrupted and went on to talk about rafi.
Forget them, Rafi touches,makes us laugh/cry/smile even more than 20 years after he died. He has most fans after lata even today.
Just before ending: If u could, record the above songs. Also record some very nice songs of the male singer you like.(Choose the ones that stand for the vocal quality).
Give the records to some guy who doesnt understand either of the languages. U could choose a foreigner/konkani/bengali etc.Ask him for his opinion
Well we have tried it. rafi won 82%. Noteable was also that 98% said they liked rafi songs on first hearing.

ST;
u have mentioned, 24 rafi songs, but i can mention thousands of SPB songs, but don't have the time, ha ha
>>i am ready to jump from the twin towers.<<,
I am afraid, u can't do that any more!
do u know that Rafi him self said that SPB is his favourite?
Rafi is another Hype just like most of the North Indian hype, that's all.

Raghu.. S.N.Surendar is not SPB's clone. S.N.Surendar's own voice is sweet. Infact he has such a sweet voice. Don't insult him. Mohan's entire acting career was possible because of him.
Arun Mozhi's voice is more like Krishna Chander and other kerala singers not SPB. Only Mano was trying to imitate SPB. But the truth is his own voice sounds little bit like SPB. I understand your extreme level of attraction to SPB's voice. But don't put down all the other singers. Some like SPB. Some like Rafi. Some like Kishore. Some like KJY. So it is highly a subjective issue. You cannot generalize based on anything. One thing you have successfully managed to do is drawing many postings to this subjective thread. Otherwise it is a futile exercise on the part of you to convince KJY fans, Rafi fans, Kishore fans with your theory. No one is going to buy your argument. Regards.

"Rafi is another Hype just like most of the North Indian hype, that's all"
Ignorance is bliss - so true with you. Please stop going around telling people that you are a singer. What kind of a singer are you if you can't appreciate a legendary musician's work? Rafi is hype! - I guess you need to learn to show respect first for others before making such ridiculous statements.
"do u know that Rafi him self said that SPB is his favourite?" - And stop quoting people without giving a source. We all understand how much importance needs to be given to musicians praising fellow musicians. You are your best judge.
We all know that ST's list is not exhaustive by any means. In fact one song that comes to my mind immediately that ST forgot to add is "Kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya" with Lata.
Anyway, God help you Raghu.

oH DEAR, can u pls tell me an instance when I am putting down a singer, If I did, I would not have created threads about, PBS,AMR, Ghantasala, SJ & PS, please go to archives and find these threads if u do not believe me, but many north Indian's are over hyped in India, look at Dilip Kumar & Sivaji Ganeshan, Obviously Sivaj is the greatest actor india had ever produced, but how many northies are aware of these?, NONE!
They all hype about BIG B & Dilip Kumar, look at Rajni kanth & Kamal Hasan, they r way better actors than BIG B, & Dilip, how many Aryans know about IR? pls tell me, they will go on & on and chant about how great RDB & SDB are!
Kaumudi;
I have respect for singers & Md more than u, u better show some respect when u r postings !
>>"do u know that Rafi him self said that SPB is his favourite?" <<

Raghu,
u r welcome... I agree with most of ur points (not everything though :) ).. Northies are overhyped sometimes but I'm not sure whether this was the case with Rafi.

Raghu cool down buddy.. Good Voice is a gift from god. I always envy even ordinary stage singers because they do something i can't do. Hence i respect all the singers. Only thing i don't like is when singers sing in language that they don't know. It is pretty difficult to put accent at the right place if you don't know the language. I don't know how well Udit Narayan sings hindi songs. But he should be banned from tamil for all his mispronunciation. Unfortunately India doesn't have one single language. So perceptions like who is the best MD, singer, actor will widely vary. If you have said SPB is one of the best singer i would have gladly joined you. To be honest i have heard only very few songs of Md.Rafi. But i have heard more songs of KJY and SPB. When i get up in the morning in chill weather, and go to office in my car nothing gives me more pleasure than listening to "Kamalam Padha Kamalam" song from Mohamul. Such a soulful and indepth voice KJY has. In the evenings on my way back i would love to listen to songs like "Pon Malai Pozhudu" of SPB. Sometimes i would listen to 70's songs of P.Suseela. Sometimes Seerkazhi Govindarajan. Sometimes Janaki, Chitra, Swarnalatha. So let us appreciate all the singers. In my view all singers have some kind of talent. Let us appreciate all of them.
