This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

Dear Saravanan,
Thanks for the information and correction.
Got confused between Yanai and Malai Naattu Mangai. This is the price for a rush job. I did not see both movies. So I phoned up a friend, and he gave me this film as KVM's work.
Yaaraithaan Nambuvatho Pethai Nenjam?
Yanai Valartha Vanambadi Magan- this was the second comeback of Anandan. There was a fight scene in which Aandandan struggles with python. It was so realistic and the film was making waves in Madurai- the stronghold of MGR. The MGR fans were very angry and threatened to burn the theatre should the film continued to be screened. Anadan was a handsome, talented and upcoming star. Was acting in many movies as a dancer and finally shot into famin in Vijayapuri Veeran. That was an instant hit, and MGR felt threatened. Through the normal cinema politics he was cleaned off- by a word of mouth to the producers and irectors. He did surface his head, unfortunately in small roles and mostly as villain.
A loss to the cine industry. He was only able to leave behind Disco Shaanthi. He had a very lovely smile for which many ladies patronised his movies. Just watch the scene paadatha Paattellam Paada Vanthaal in Veerathirumagan for his sweet smile.
Nice to digress sometimes to quench the heat of thinking too much.
OK, I have to organise my thoughts on the next few series I am to post.
Thanks again.

KaN Malar: has got a beautiful sad solo by PS "Adi aayee aayee kalyaNa kaalamadi katcheri..". I think this is for Sowcar.
Yaanai Valartha vanam badi-yin magan: Jaam Jaam endru sandhoshama nee thaLir nadai podada raja bheema... sung by PS (for Master Aanandan before he becomes REAL Aanandan) & SPB (for REAL Aanandan). Very good song...

kanmalar - thOdudaiya seviyan is by thirugnana sambandhar. Interesting to see if KVM reused the same tune later in gnanakuzhanthai or if he composed two different tunes. MSV in thirumaal perumai and later in navagraha naayaki (?) reuses the same tune for pachchai maamalai pOl mEni - a divya prabandham (TMS and later Chithra).

PART 44
MORE MOVIES OF SIVAJI GANESAN
KULAMAGAL RAATHAI (1963)
A film based on Vaazhvu Engey by Akilan. Sivaji, Devika and Saroja Devi act in main roles. This film has good songs again.
TMS and Suseela sing this famous song:
Chandiranai Kaanaamal Alli Mugam Malaruma
TMS sings this song on the power of the press (banned in Malaysia):
Ulagam Ithile Adanguthu
Unmayum Poiyum Vilanguthu
Kalagam varuthu Theeruth
Achu Kalayaal Nilayum Maaruthu
Kannadasan wrote a song lifted from Shelly(?) and sung by Suseela:
Iravukku Aayiram Kangal
Pagalukku Onre Onru
Arivukku Aayiram Kangal
Uravukku Onre Onru
P. Suseela sings two sad songs, and they are real good songs. One is:
Aaruyire Mannavane
Anbu Mayil Vanakkam
The other song is:
Pagalile Chandiranai Paarkka Ponen
Avan Iravile Varuvathaaga Oruthi
Sonnaal
TMS sings another sad song:
Unnai Solli Kutramillai
Ennai Solli Kutramillai
Kaalam Seitha Kolamadi
Kadvul Seitha Kutramadi
Kadavul Seitha Kutramadi
P. Suseela sings this wonderful song for Devika, where piano is very well used. The song orchestration is rich.
Kallamalar Sirippile
Kankalin Azhaippile
Kanni Manam Sernthathamma
Kaathal Paada Vaguppile.
TMS sings the MKT song in his own voice. This was a long time desire of TMS, and KVM made the arrangements. TMS was at onte time called kutty MKT. When he sung the Annamitta Veettile in Mandhiri Kumari, liteners felt that it was MKT who was singing.
Rathe Unakku Kobam Aagathadi
This film had good songs, but did not go far in the collection box. Good songs remained the only consolation. I remember seeing the film in Kodambakkam LIBERTY in 1977.
KUNGUMAM (1963)
This is a film of Sivaji. This film had good songs and the film ran well. Sivaji Ganesan, Ranga Rao, MV Rajamma, Vijayakumari and Saradha are the main stars.
The title song itself is great, sung by Suseela and Soolamangalam Rajalechumy.
Kungumam Mangala Mangayar kungumam
Kungumam Madurai Meenachi Kungumam
P. Suseela sings this solo for Saradha:
Kaalangal Thorum THirudarkal Irunthaal
Arivaayaa thiozhi-athil
Kaathal thirudarkal Paathi Irunthaar
Arivaaya Thozhi
Vaasal Thiranthaal Thirudan varuvaan
Manathai Thiranthaal Kaathalan varuvaan
Kaathal Thirudar Payappada Maattar
Arivaaya Thozhi-Antha
Kalvarukkenru Sattam Illai
Arivaaya Thozhi
There is this love duet by TMS and P Suseela, that would remain one of my favourite songs of all times. KVM has once again composed in a manner that is truly mind-boggling.
PS Thoongatha Kannnenru Onru
Thudikkinra Sugam Enru Onru
Thaangatha Manam Enru ONru
Thanthaaye Nee Ennai Kandu
TMS- Mutraatha Iravondril Naan vaada
Mudiyaatha Kathai Onru Nee Koora
PS-Utraarum Kaanaamal Uyironru Sernthaada

Yaar EnnSonnaalum Nillathu
Anai Pottu Thaduthaalum Nillathu
TMS-Theeratha Vilayaattu Thirai Pottu Vilayaadi

Vegu Thooram Nee Senru NInraalum-Un
Vuizhi Mattum Thaniyaaga vanthaalum
PS-varugindra Vihzhiyondru Tharugindra parisonru
Perugindra Sugamendru Onru
TMS sings this great song that touches one's very soul.
Mayakkam Enathu Thayagam, Mounam Enathu Thaai Mozhi
Kalakkam EnathuKaaviyam Naan
Kanner Vadiutha Oviyam
I remember Prabhu and Rekha singing this song on stage in some movie. The song is that popular.
There is a duet by TMS and P Suseela, the meaning of which would be clearly understood by those discerning minds and searching souls:
PS
Poonthotta Kaavalkara
Poopparikka Ithanai Naala
Manthoppu Kavalkaara
Mambazhathai maranthuvittaya
Maranthuvittaya
Ther Eri Varuvaanendru
Theru Meethu Valam Vanthaal
Ther Kandaal There Kandaal
Silai Athile Illaye Raaja.
Malai Mele Mazhai Vizhunthu
Vaigaiyile Vellam vanthu
Vayaleri Paayum Munne
Vantha Vellam Ponathu raja
TMS
Paruthi Kaattil Pazham Kidaikkum
Pasi Theerum Enru Enni
Oruthi Ingey yengigiraale Ohohoi
Oru Thalaiyaai Vadukinrale Vadukinrale
Nethiyile Pottu Vachi
Nenjai Athil Thottu Vachi
Thottu vacha Nenjikkulle
Thoonguvathu Evaro Yaaro
Then comes the famous song by TMS and S. Janaki.
Chinnanjiriya Vannap Paravai
Ennathai Solluthamma
Kungumam is Sivaji's own film, produced under his mother's name as Rajamani pictures. This is a classical song and so KVM found it most appropriate to get Seergazhi Govindarajan to sing it. Seergazhi and S. Janaki were singing and Sivaji Ganesan entered the recording studio. When Sivaji saw Seergazhiyar singing, he told KVM to change him and get TMS to sing it out. That was done. Seergazhi took exception to that. This was the time when Seergazhiyar's chances were slowly being reduced. Much later, Seergazhiyar saw TMS and told him to this effect " it is alright for you to take my place, but you should not eat on the leave that was prepared for me" Sivaji Ganesan had his own reasons. Seergazhi Govindarajan's voice never suited Sivaji and he was used perhaps only on two occasions- Kappalottiya Thamizhan-"Odi Vilayadu Pappa" and Punar Janmam-Naan Adum Aattam"
NAAN VANANGUM DEIVAM (1963)
A very average movie with Sivaji and Padmini acting.
Not great songs either.
There is one song worth mentioning. That was originally planned for Sivaji, but as AL Ragavan’s voice did not suit Sivaji, the soing went for TK Ramachandran. That song by AL Ragavan and Jikki is:
Mullai Poo Manakkuthu
Muthai Pole Sirikkuthu
Alli Alli Vasathenai
Ilam Thendral Thelikkuthu
RATHA THILAKAM (1963)
Kannadasan’s own film taken in great hurry to create patriotic feelings in the wake of the Indo-China ware of 1962. Within 2 weeks of the release the war ended, and the film came to a halt. In the first show, there was one scene where the Russian flag was shown flying upside down. This was spotted and the flag scene was shot immediately in 20 copies and supplied to the theatres where they were appropriately fitted. Sivaji Ganesan, Savithri and Pushpalatha star in this films.
In this movie Kannadasan himself appears and TMS sings for him. Kakkan, the home minister then gave him permit. In that feeling of joy and excitement Kannadasan wrote this song:
Oru Koppayile En Kudiyiruppu
Oru Kolamayil En THunayiruppu
ISai Paadalile
Uyir Thduippu
Naan RAsippathellam Azhagin Sirippu.
There is also a comedy song by LR Eswary
Pogathe Pogathe En Kanavaa
LR Eswary sings one more song for Pushpalatha:
Vadai Katramma Vadai Katramma
Vaaliba Mansai Nalukku Naalaa vaaattuvathennamma
Vaattuvathennamma
TMS sings this famous song:
Budhan Vantha Thisayinile Por
TMS and P. Suseela sing this college song:
Pasumai Niraintha Ninaviugale
Paadi Thirintha Parvaikale
TMS sings this song too:
Pani Padarntha Malayin Mele
TMS and LR Eswary sing this duet:
Thaazhamboove Thanga Nilavey
This film ran for two weeks as it had to be forcefully stopped following the cease of the war.
There is a dance scene where KVM uses modern music. This has come out in the vinyl record as well. It is titled “ Merry Go Round”
SELVAM (1966)
A film by VK Ramasamy where he does not act. Sivaji Ganesan, KR Vijaya and MV Rajamma act in this movie. There are some good songs.
Jamunarani and Tharaburam Sunderajan sing this song:
Unakkaga Naan
Unakkagavaa
Unnai Kaanavaa
Unnil Ennai Kaanavaa
TMS sings this song that goes more like a prose rather than poem:
Avala Sonna?
Irukkathu
Nadakkavum Mudiyathu
Nadakkavum Koodathu
Nambamudyavillai
Illai Illai
TMS and P. Suseela sing this very famous song:
ondraa iraNdaa eduthu solla
uLLa uNarchiyai vaarththayil vadiththu solla--eNNam (ondraa)
uyiraa udalaa pirindhu sella
naam pirindhadhu ennaaLum kalandhu koLLa--naan (uyiraa)
nindraal nadandhaal un ninaivu
en ninaivae agandraal un kanavu--kanavu (ondraa)
ninaivum kanavum enakkaaga
en netriyil kungumam unakkaaga (uyiraa)
kungumam nilaikkum kulamagaLae
naan kulavida thudippadhu un nizhalae
nizhalum ninaivum anithiyamae
endrum nilayaai nirpadhu sathiyamae
sathiyamae...sathiyamae...
PAALADAI (1967)
Bhim Singh directed this film and became a flop. But the songs were good. Sivaji, KR Vijaya and Padmini acted in main roles.
P. Suseela sings:
Appadi Enna Paarvai Angum INgum
Aasai vanthu Mothutho Angam Engum
P. Suseela sings this wonderful solo:
Pattadai Thottil Katta vendum
En Kannukku
Paal Vanna Sangu Kolla Vendum
Tharaburam Sunderajan and Jamunarani sing an average song written by Tanjai vanan:
Duettu Duettu Duettu Paadidum Muthaliravu
TMS and Suseela again sing this famous duet song:
PS-Enge Enge Enge’
En Kannukku Vrunthenge
TMS-Ilam Pennukku Virunthenge?
PESUM DEIVAM (1967)
Ravi Productions Pesum Deivam Story and direction was by KS Gobalakrishnan. Vale wrote all songs in this film. First time Valee wrote for KVM in full.
A good song by Soolamangalam Rajalechumy and group
Noorandu Kaalam vaazhga
Noi NOdi Illamal Valarga Naan anuppuvathu Kaditham alla
Athil Ullathellam Ezhuthum Alla-Ennam
En Ullam athai Kollai Kolla
A great song by TMS
Naan Anuppuvathu Kaditham alla
Athil Ullathellam Ezhuthum Alla
En Ullamathai Kollai Kolla
Nilavukku Vaan Exzhuthum Kaditham
Neerukku Meen Ezhuthum Kaditham

Another great song by TMS
Aazhiyile Piravaatha Alaimagalo
Yezhisaiyai Payilatha Kalaimagalo
Oozhi Nadam Ouriyaatha Malai magalo
Ulagathaai Petredutha Thalaimagalo
Azhagu Deivam Mella Mella

Mazhai Megam Kudai Pidikkum Kulir Nilavum Alla
Ingum Angum Neerodum Neerodai Alla
Itharku Mele Ilakkiayathiul vaarthai Ethu Solla
Soolamangalam Rajalechumy and group sing this song that is played in radio when wishing well for marriages and birthday celebrations
Noorandu Kaalam vaazhga
Noi Nodi Illam,al Valarga
TMS and P Suseela sang a lovely song that has fast beats for TMS and slow beat for P. Suseela (Adiye Netru Piranthaval Neeye in En Thamby is close to this style)
PS-Pathu maatham Sumakkavillai Sellaiya- nAan
pathiyamum Irukavillai Sellaia
TMS-Kandavar Kannu padum Sellatha
Kannathile Karuppu Pottu Vakkacholli Sollathaa
Thandai Silambeduthui Aadathaa
Nalla Thamizhaale Thgaalaatonru Paadathaa
TMS and P S. KVM has given both fast and slow beat for each singer
There is one more song that starts off as a love duet and goes on into a tribal-folk tune picturised on Sivaji and Padmini. In the film we see both as a continuation of one song. But in record they are two separate songs.
The first part is by TMS and Suseela.
Idaya Oonjal Aaadava
Iniya Raagam paadava
The second part goes:
Jokka Jolikkuthappa
S. Janaki sings:
Pilai Chelvame
Pesum Deivame
VILAYAATU PILLAI (1970)
Gemini pictures Vilayattu Pillai, starred Sivaji Ganesan, by Padmini, and Kanjana has two nice songs that I can think of:
S. Janaki sings this song:
Sollaamal Theriyavendume
Sollavum Thanimai Vendume
kanjaadai Puriya Vendume-Yaarum
kaanamal Sirika Vendume by S. Janagi
TMS and P. Suseela sing this song:
ERu Perusa Intha Ooru Perusu by TMS and PS.
This is the only Gemini film where KVM composed.

1. In Pesum Dievam, "Azhagu Deivam Mella Mella" was ung by TMS & PS, where PS sung only humming.
2. There is sad solo by PS in VILAYAATU PILLAI for Padmini. Can any1 please identify that?
