Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. Vijay, though both Ingeyum Oru Gangai and Poo Vilangu came in 1984, I think Poo Vilangu was the first film for Murali.
Reg. Ingeyum Oru Gangai, it was originally titled 'Oomai Veyil'- in fact Radio Ceylon used this name and played the songs for a long time, even after the film was released as 'Ingeyum Oru Gangai'!! I remember reading that the original story of 'Oomai Veyil' was not to the producer's likeng, and he asked Manivannan to script a fresh story with the condition that the songs already recorded should fit the theme, and Manivannan came up with Ingeyum Oru Gangai.
Btw, this was not the first time that Manivannan did such restructuring. Kovai Thambi, after the massive success of Payanangal Mudivathillai, comissioned Sirumugai Ravi to direct his next film. After the script was ready, Sirumugai Ravi sat with IR and the songs were recorded. Later however, Sirumugai Ravi fell out with Kovai Thambi. KT promptly sent for Manivannan, gave him the songs and told him to evolve a script suiting the songs, and Manivannan came up with Ilamai Kaalangal!

Goes to show how much value IR added out of his own efforts without even a story in place, in his early years! I didnt know Manivannan had that many bad films to his credit :-) His Nooravadhu Naal too had an excellent song "Vizhiyile mani vizhiyil".

'azhakE thamizhE' from TTK.
I remember this song was penned by K.D.Santhanam who also acted in the movie as a Thamizh pulavar. Cine Director Santhana Bharathi and comedian Sivaji (constable hero worshipping Janakaraj as "yengEyO pOittInga DeivamE" in Kamal's ApUrva SahothararkaL) are K.D.Santhanam's sons.
The Kannada song in the movie (I remember the line 'kadalina alaikaL alli shantiyum elli') was written by Shailashree herself.

Vaanaratham was the dubbed Tamil version of the Hindi film Udan Khatola. According to some accounts, the film was produced by Naushad himself. (Vaanaratham came under the banner ‘Naushad Ali Presents’) Sunny Art Productions’ Udan Khatola-1955 starred Dilip Kumar, Nimmi, Suryakumari, Jeevan, Agha, Nawab, Amar, Roopamala, Tuntun & others. It was scripted by Azmi Bazidpuri and directed by S.U.Sunny. Cinematography was by Jal Mistry.
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Udan Khatola was a loose adaptation of the classic Lost Horizon, though I am not absolutely certain about it. Lost Horizon is a fantasy adventure novel by James Hilton (also the author of that moving ‘Goodbye, Mr.Chips’). It is a widely acclaimed classic tale of a group of people whose plane crash lands in a remote part of the Himalayas- Shangri-La –a Utopian land where everything is just perfect. Lost Horizon was filmed twice- the 1937 version by Frank Capra, starring Ronald Colman & Jane Wyatt, is considered a landmark film. The 1973 version was a musical by Charles Jarrot, starring Peter Finch & Liv Ullmann.
The on-screen chemistry between Dilip Kumar in the role of Kashi and Nimmi in the role of Soni was an added attraction to Udan Khatola. Nimmi, who made her debut in Raj Kapoor’s Barsaat- 1949, acted with Dilip Kumar in some his biggest hits in those early years- Deedar-1951, Daag-1952, Aan-1953 and Amar-1954. Udan Khatola was her last film with Dilip Kumar. However in the Filmfare Awards for 1955, it was Tanguturi Suryakumari who won a Nomination under the ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ category, for her performance in the role of the queen. (She didn’t win the award though, Nirupa Roy bagged it for Munimji). Dilip Kumar won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for
1955, but it was for his performance in Aazaad.
Udan Khatola is particularly remembered for its enthralling songs. Music by Naushad. Lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni. Songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar (‘Na ro yae dil kaheen rone se’, ‘Hal ye dil mein kya karoon, ‘Ghar aaya mehmaan koyi’, ‘Mera salaam le jaa’, ‘sitaron ki mehfil’) & Mohammed Rafi (‘Mohabbat ki raahon mein’, ‘O door ke musaafir’ and ‘Na toofaan se khelo’). Naushad won a Filmfare Nomination for Udaan Khatola, but the award went to Hemant Kumar for Nagin.
Vaanaratham’s songs were written by Kambadasan. Set to the same tunes as the Hindi originals, the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, TA Mothi and Ravu Balasaraswathi.
There were 10 songs in all:

Though all the songs sung by Lata are melodious, I had a tough time deciphering the lyrics. Lata’s Tamil pronunciation seems to have improved by leaps and bounds when she came back to sing for IR in the 80s.
I picked these two as I could make some headway in following the words.
‘Hamaare dil se na jaana, dhokha na khaana, duniya badee beyimaan’, the Hindi original of ‘En ullam vittu odaathae’ is supposed to be among Lata’s biggest hits in the 50s.
The Hindi version of the other song ‘Endhan kannalan karai nokki pogiraan’ is ‘ Morae sayyan ji uthrenge paar,ho nadhiya dheere baho’. The chorus voices (the oarsmen?) with their ‘hayya ho hayya ra hayya’ highlight the melancholy in the song, set to Raag Pilu.
The interludes consist almost wholly only of chorus voices, which must have been something unique in those days.

When Kambadasan passed away on 23rd May 1973 due to tuberculosis and liver failure aggravated by years of alcohol abuse, there was no one by his hospital bedside. Hearing the news of his demise on the radio, three of his relatives claimed his mortal remains and consigned them to flames--
Born in 1916 near Thindivanam, Kambadasan (real name CS Rajappa, pet name Appavu), did not study beyond 6th standard at school. He was drawn to the stage at an early age. His first efforts at lyric writing were for the film Srinivasa Kalyanam-1934, when he was just 18 years old. He continued to write, and his songs in films like Vaamana Avatharam, Aaraichi Mani, Poompaavai, Udhayanan, Gyanasoundari, Mangayarkkarasi, Idhaya Geetham, Vanasundari, Aan, Avan, Kanngal, Thandhai, Vanaratham, Magadalanaattu Mary and Akbar attained popularity.
Who can forget Kambadasan’s classic outpourings like ‘Arul thaarum deva maathavae’, Kanniyae maamarithaaye’, ‘Paarthaal pasi theerum’ ‘Ilavenil chandrigaiyaai’, “Kann kaanaadhadhum manam kandu vidum’, ‘Ekaandhamaam immaalayil enai vaatithu un ninaivae’, ‘Varungaala thalaivan neeyae papa’, ‘Eno thaan garvam nenjae’, ‘Kaathal kondaalae bayamenna’
An early love failure filled Kambadasan with dejection, and he took to drink. He slowly lost the goodwill of the production companies due to repeated failure to keep appointments. Sadly, he is now more remembered for his songs for dubbed films. Kanavu kanda kaathal kadhai kanneer aachae--

Sometime back, while idly surfing the net, I came across an interview with Ravu Balasaraswathi. I have always wondered at the logic
behind making Balasaraswathi sing just two songs in Vanaratham. After all, TA Mothi was given all songs that Rafi sang in Udan Khatola, so it would have been more befitting if Balasaraswathi had been given all Lata’s songs, instead of just two, considering that Balasaraswathi knew the language better.
I could never find the answer to this puzzle, until I read Balasarswathi’s account of Vanaratham in the said interview (Courtesy : Telugucinema.com).

“In Bombay they made a movie called Udan Khatola under Naushad's music direction. It was a double version picture- Hindi and Tamil. At that time Naushad got all my records from Madras and he liked my voice and called me to Bombay. I went there and sang two songs for the Tamil version. And Lata sang for Hindi. First day Lata sang for the Hindi version and the second day, I sang the Tamil version. When she did her recording I listened and sang differently on the second day. That time Ghulam Mohd, Kalyanji - Anandji were assisting Naushad. Then Ghulam came to me after recording and praised my voice a lot, and requested me to stay in Bombay. Lata saw this. And next day the remaining songs that I was to sing were cancelled because Lata refused to sing unless I was sent back to Madras. At that time no one
was there for them to sing in Hindi except Lata. So they were forced to oblige her”
