You see ARR says that shankar wants something and he gets it (songs) he knows music so he asks for what type of song it is.
Mani allowsfor his favourite md to experiments, and the outcome is superb, i would say arr music for mani has been great from Roja to Uyire(dil se) Every album for mani has something new and great, rahaman has always done better work for mani i'd say

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH JUNIOR. ALL MANI-ARR ALBUMS HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT. ALTHOUGH SHANKAR-ARR ALBUMS ARE GOOD, THEY ARE OFTEN RACY AND MORE RYTHMIC IN NATURE AND THEREFORE THE PUBLIC RESPONSE IS GREATER. BUT, WHEN IT COMES TO BEAUTIFUL SOUL STIRRING MELODIES, I THINK THE MANI-ARR TEAM IS MUCH BETTER THAN THE SHANKAR-ARR TEAM.

I too agree that Mani gets the best of ARR. No wonder ARR came up with Roja and Thiruda Thiruda for Mani. I was however a bit disappointed with the later Mani-ARR films, except Iruvar. They are good in their own right but fade in comparison to Thiruda Thiruda(IMO, the best Mani-ARR).
In fact IMO, even IR gave very special music for Mani's films.

Arguably the best album of ARR ever till date is Thiruda thiruda.
that answers the question....

The fact that Mani-ARR combo is better than Shankar-ARR combo, is not obvious, because like Akaash mentioned,Shankar-ARR is more noticed because of the racy and peppy songs. There is much more variety in Mani-ARR because Mani himself is a director of much wider range and depth than Shankar.

Hey guys,
All of you forget one MAJOR fact,
The topic should've been, " who gives more life to ARR songs - Mani or Shankar?"
This is because, ARR's songs depend basically on the picturisation, the artistes involved, the location and so many other factors. And till today, ARR has not been associated with any small time producer or Director. It is at that stage can one judge the effectivity of the MD. Becoz, in most cases, Mani and Shankar, give LIFE to ARR's songs and needless to say both are GREAT directors.
Sharma.

IN CASE OF SANKER THE SONGS ARE COMERCIAL BUT SUPER

"Minsara Kanavu" & "KKKK" were perfect hits with Arr & Rajiv menon combination. Also, we can't forget, Balachander's "Duet" his first & only film with ARR till now. We just can't stop with Shanker & mani rathnam.

Roja THirudaThiruda Bombay Iruvar Dilse and Alaipayuthey( to lesser extent ) are all soundtraks that have been of a higher calibre than MOST other ARR tunes. I would go so far as to say that MAni-ARR combo has churned out the most masterpieces from Rahman than any other other combo.
Remember too that 'well accepted' does not equal 'best'. Even though not all of the named soundtraks were accepted by all India masses (eg Iruvar), the soundtraks were a feast to the ears...well MY ears at least.

Mani Ratnam is arguably, the best director in the history of modern Indian Cinema.Comparable to genius of Hitchcock and our very own Gurudutt.
The hallmark of a Good Director is an eye for talent. The ability to spot talent, to nurture it and manage it well. And Mani has done these three things repeatedly.
Every movie that AR RAHMAN has done for Mani has had something more than just a nice feel or tune. Many such numbers explore the Depth and Range of Music creating newer sounds. Some of AR Rahman's best songs are: 1.Arayathil(IRUVAR),2.Kadhal Rojave(ROJA)3.Virapandi kottayile(Thiruda Thiruda)4.Bombay Theme Song(BOMBAY)5.Pachaiye Nirame(ALAIPAYUTHEY).
The Special feature of these songs is their repeatability and sheer variety of tunes within each song, haunting effect. This coupled with the Brilliant Visualisation and Picturisation of Mani make them truly remarkable. The key to their success is their conceptualisation which occurs in the mind of the director, based on which the Music Director sets the mood and tune of a song.
So there is no doubt that Mani Ratnam gets the best of all techinicians he works with and definitley out of AR RAHMAN whose tunes form an integral part of the Magic of Mani's movies.

Wazzap?
Gotta say .. Mani - ARR combo works da BEST. Love Roja, THiruda Thiruda, Uyire and Alai Payuthey. ARR gives some really nice tunes, which may take a little longer to grasp, but last w/ u a life time!!
Nevertheless, I think Shankar-ARR combo is good for picturization. Maybe itz because of da song in Jeans .. Poovukul Olindhirrukkum ... w/ aish in it and all the world wonders. (I love AISH!) Also, Indian .. Telephone Manipol Siripaval Ivala? Da scene where they do a pan when Kamal and Manisha are on the top of That bridge I believe.
Actually, now that I think of it, for pictuization .. Mani-ARR is good too, I mean .. Pachai Nirame .. dat song .. was done beautifully!! Matching colors and stuff. Also in Roja, for Chinna Chinna Aasai. And so on..
ARR-Shankar is very good combo too. ARR gives really nice music for him as well, From Gentleman, Mudhalvan, Jeans, Indian .. etc.
Mani's I like, Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, Uyire, Alai Payuthey, Bombay!!

IMO "...Gets the best out of ARR" is relative in sense. Best of What? Talent in Creativity? Talent in Catchy numbers? Talent in Experimentation?
If the implication is in extraction of Talent in Catchy numbers then Shankar is better, Most of Mani movies' catchies cannot be compared to that of Shankar's, though 'Arabi kadaloram' and few can be the contenders.
ARR expresses his creativity and experimentations more in Mani's movies. They are drastically lesser in Shankar's movies.
IMHO its Shankar's movies which fetch ARR's other albums' insipirations. On the same hand it is these Shankar's output which gave ARR more popularity amongst wider and common audience and made him Ace MD.

Tree is known by its Fruits...ARR music helped SHANKAR to give more commercial hits...Hence judging from more audience appreciation and hits SHANKAR has derived better results from ARR...
All five films of SHANKAR were BIG commercial HITS atleast in TAMIL...
Where as THIRUDA THIRUDA...IRUVAR..UYIRE...were all FLOPS....Alaipayuthey was HIT only in cities and overseas...Hence MR&ARR team has lessACCEPTANCE than ARR&SHANKAR combination...with the average viewers...Hence my vote is for SHANKAR.....ahmed

Be it Shankar or Maniratnam, the full potential of A. R. Rehman is yet to be discovered.
Love, love, love, love, ......seems to be the main theme of 99% of the Tamil movies. If this topic forms the background of any movie, barring a few, the music directors tend to get into a sort of mindset. A mindset wherein the type of scene for a love song is fixed but for the actual location. Its like seeing the same thing with different colored lenses. When such a subject takes importance its very difficult for the music directors to express themselves. A world which seemed to have endless possibilities suddenly seems to have exhausted all of them. This is why most of the songs from different movies seem to have some correlation.
I think it is important for film directors to approach these highly talented music directors for composing music for movies that have a whole new PARADIGM. Only a Paradigm shift will reveal the full potential of great music directors like A. R. Rehman, be it Maniratnam of Shankar.

first place maniratnam bubble have burst\
nowadays his films are rubbish like
alaipoayuthe
Seeing september masam song makes one awkward
and his film generally goes on well except few minutes of hardcore & outright vulgar(vellai mazhaI) LIKE SO ON.
Shankar films with ARR are more nice.
shankar have definitely replaced manirathnam
