This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

Mr. Manisegaran: I also thought that PS and TMS came together in AVM's "Chellapillai". Sudarsanam had experimented with TMS and PS and TMS seems to have acknowledged the raw talent of a singer who would later acquire a legendary status. Can you some throw light on that......It seems only Jikki's'KRR " Vadana Ezhil Raaja" became more popular than all other songs. Was it indeed their first colloboration?

Vicky,
As I said Chellappillai was made earlier in 1954 but released in 1955. Koondukkili and Thookku Thookki were released in 1954.It was KVM who sent TMS to AVM to get a singing chance, and so ended up in Chellapillai. That was the first attempt of TMS under Sudarsanam. Naadu Nadakkira Nadayile is with MS Rajeswary.
The famous songs of this film are:
1) Kulla Podanum by TMS
2) Naadu Nadakkira Nadayiley by TMS and MSRajeswary
3) madhana Ezhil Raja Nee Vaa ny Jikki and KRR.
The first song TMS and P Suseela sang together is said to be Bantulu's film Enga Kudumbam Perisu. The song is "Ratha Madhava Vinotha Raja" an excllent song. The MD is TG Lingappa.
We have to be clear of one thing. There are far too many gaps in the cine industry. The authors of cine history themselves have forgotten them.Written records are very much lacking.
Thanks for the comments and interest.
Anbudan,
Manisegaran

Archivist,
Many requests have come to cover on many aspects. KVM is not a lake. He is an endless ocean.
What I thought was light has beceome a herculean task. I dont think I would be able to cover what KVM did in 60 years in this thread. I have to apologitically end soon.

Mr. Manisegaran: very interesting about TMS, only a month ago, Film Chamber Chennai was honoring TMS itseems hardly anyone turned up to felicitate TMS. Someone said, because of TMS' big mouth he did not retain freiends! TMS is my favorite voice after Seergazhi, but even then bad mouthing IR was just incredible.
but, about commentaries on our films and arts, it is not possible because we are not by nature like the british, mapping, recording, analysing or archiving, so lot of our puranas is word of mouth. however, today we need it written down by people like yourself, otherwise many more will not be able to cherish the great arts and films like we do here in the forum. this is not selfindulgence but just recognition of unperceived greatness of our talents who have made a positive social impact. Best wishes.

Manisegaran, is it possible for you to print here or upload elsewhere the complete filmography of MSV and KVM? Just their tamil film projects alone?

sk put up a discography and it should still be online - check http://newtfmpage.com/my/md/kvm.html
Unfortunately, I can only see gibberish - don't know if the font has changed.

Whenever you can, please continue this thread. As other posters have mentioned we need histories and appreciations like these especially as these events recede into the past.
You mentioned earlier that the early 50s was a time of great change/challenge and mentioned the names of several MDs. It would be great if you could write about these times in detail at a later date when convenient to you.

Mani Sir,
Great going! Hope you don't stop the journey half-way with the 50s. Please continue--.
I just now read the various posts on AM Raja. In the end, he was his own enemy. He was a genius, no doubt, but very rigid, eccentric and suspicious. His career as a music director never really took off and died a quick death, due to his own attitude. Oh, but what magical songs he gave in Kalyanaparisu, Vidivelli, Then nilavu and Aadiperukku! In Anbukkor Anni, I remember only Oru naal ithu oru naal- lovely song!
Even PBS, who succeeded AMR as the voice of Gemini Ganesh, held AMR in awe. BTW, AMR had made PBS sing in Vidivelli and Aadiperukku.
By the early 60s itself, AMR's career appears to have finished, with only stray songs here and there.
Other than what have already been mentioned I can think of a couple of songs from the dubbed film- Arabu Naatu Azhagi (1961)- 2 duets with PS- Kaneer thuli and Un azhagai- music by Vijayabhaskar, who was then specialising in dubbed movies( Jimbo, Nagarathil Jimbo etc).
Even Veda who made him sing in Paasamum Nesamum, played it safe, by giving a song to PBS as well- Ellam nadaga medai!
Then we see AMR's total disappearance from tfm- he is said to have sung in Malayalam films.
A long hibernation- till 1971, when V Kumar brought him back with that memorable song- Mutharame un oodal ennavo- AMR+LRE- Rangarattinam.
This paved the way for AMR's second innings in the 70s, which brought about some excellent songs.
I can think of:
1. Mutharame un oodal ennavo- Rangarattinam- with LRE- V Kumar-1971
2.Senthamaraye-Pugundha veedu-with Jikki-SG-1972
3.Chinna kannane-Thaaikku oru pillai-SG-1972
4.Rasi nalla rasi-Veetu mapillai-with Jikki-AMR music-1973
5.Malare o Malre- Veetu Mapillai-AMR music-1973
6.???-Veetukku vandha marumagal-with Jikki-SG-1973
7.Ethai ketpadho-Pathu madha bandham-with Jikki-SG-1974
8.Roja malaraipole-Enakkoru magan pirappan-with PS-AMR music-1975
9.Manathukku theriyum-Enakkoru magan pirappan-with Jikki-AMR music-1975
10.Enada kanna-Anbu Roja-with PS-SG-1975
11.Ananda Illam-Ithu ivargalin kathai-with PS-V Kumar-1975
12.I feel 'En Deivame' is also from Ithu Ivargalin kathai- 1975
Mani sir, are there any more AMR songs in the 70s?
Please tell us. BTW,I don't think En Deivame is from Payanam- MSV never gave a song to AMR in the 70s, though AMR sang for him in the 50s-Mahadevi,Petra maganai vitra annai,Thalai koduthan thambi etc.
Sorry for the digression!

Saravanan,
Well done. You have meticulously wound up AMRaja's declining days. In fact owing to the tremendous liking I have for AMR's voice, I decided not to think of the songs of the 1970s. I still want to remember the AMR of the earlier days. You see I could not even quote the song En Devane. Perhaps from the film Ithu Ivargalin Kathai. You haved given the later day info of AMR that I dont have with me. Great.
It is not a digression. I started the storm by quoting AMR's fight with KVM and from there the readers are expressing their views.
MSV gave him "Naame Jeeva Sugam" in Genoa.
MSV/TKR gave him a song in Magane Kel-Unnai Paartha Kangal Rendum Ennai Paarthu Pazhikkuthu
Thanks.

Saravanan,
How come you dont remember Chittu Muthu Paappaa Pattu Chattai Podu of PSuseela from Anbukkor Anni? The other dance song is Chittaga Malar Mottaga by Jikki. Great. Thanga Thamarai Onnu Karu Vandugal Athile Rendu is another great gem by PSuseela.
Yes. Vidvelli has pannodu Piranthathu Thaalam by PBS and Jikki.Trichy Loganathan was also given a chance-Kaaru Savari Joru and koduthu paar paar
Aadipperukku has Puriyaathu Puriyaathu Vazkayin Ragasiyam Puriyaathu by PBS. He gave Annayin Arule Va Va vaa. Seergazhi told me this song average, but as a listener I consider it great to my taste.
No end to digression. Lets come back to KVM

Mani Sir, thanks for your reply.
AMr had made TMS too sing in his music- it was in Enakkoru oru magan pirappan- much as I try, the opening lines elude me- I think it was a duet with LRE.
One doubt: You had written about TMS-PS, that their first duet is said to be "Radha madhava" from Engal kudumbam Perisu, which came out in 1958. But they have sung together even in Pathini Deivam-1957(Mohana punnagai yeno-great song-music-MSV-TKR), and in Pudhayal-1957 (Nalla kaalam-music-MSV-TKR). Is it perhaps that Radha Madhava was recorded earlier?
Archivist, I am sure that Mani sir will come to KVM-KJY and KVM-SPB chapters presently, but regarding your query if Jayachandran has sung under KVM's baton, I can think of the following songs:
Engengum aval mugam- Neruppile pootha malar
Iravinil paniyinil-Neruppile pootha malar-with VJ
Thirunaalum varumo swami-Isaikku oru kovil-with PS
Maaligaiyaanalum-Asha-with VJ
There may be some more. I vaguely remember a song from Naan Naanethaan too.

Saravanan,
We should not go by the date of release of movies. Chellapillai was recorded earlier and released later, which was an explanation given in my earlier posting.Senthamarai was the first direction by Bhim Singh, but came out as his 13th movie. Harichandra was delayed too by so many years. So was Annamitta Kai. So songs are recorded in advancee and films are released later.
There is no clear documentary evidencee on Radha madava, and I had to depend on external sources. My source is interviews with cine people. It could also be possible that both of us may be wrong! But do P. Suseela and TMS remember which was ther first? When we asked P Suseela, she could not remember. TMS has to come to the rescue. Where cine news is concerned most of us are trading in muddy waters, as there are far too many gaps.
Thanks

TMS's another song under AMR is `Saththiyame Thunayana pothu' in `Anbukor Anni', an excellent song.
Mr. Manisegaran,
Almost the entire article so far is news to me. Please continue with this wonderful work.
