6 Songs : Mind Blowing!!

Simply mind-blowing
November 20
Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”
Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.
Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

Here something on a lighter vein to cool things for ARR zealots:
Letter by ARR Rahman's Mom to ARR in London. The reason why I am leaking this letter out to public is because I want every one to see how talented ARR family is:
Salemalekum! . I am in a well here and hoping you in the same well there. I'm
writing this letter slowly, because I know you cannot read fast. We don't
live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that
most accidents happen 20 miles from home, so we
moved 20 miles. I wont be able to send the address as the last Sardar who
stayed here took the house numbers with them for their new house so they
would not have to change their address.
Hopefully by next week we will be able to take our earlier address Plate
here, so that our address will remain same too. This place is really nice.It
even has a washing machine, situated right above the commode. I m not sure
it works. Last week I put in 3 shirts, pulled the chain and havent seen them
since. The weather here isn't too bad. It rained only twice last week. The
first time it rained for 3 days and second time for 4 days.
The coat you wanted me to send you, your Aunt said it would be a little too
heavy to send in the mail with all the metal buttons, so we cut them off and
put them in the pocket.Your past rich friend Kadhir has another job. He has 500 men under
him. He is cutting the grass at the cemetery.
By the way I took bahu to our club's poolside. The manager is badmash. He
told her that two piece swimming suit is not allowed in this club. We were
confused as to which piece should we remove? Your sister had a baby this
morning. I haven't found out whether
it is a girl or a boy, so I don't know whether you are an Aunt or Uncle.
Your uncle, Abdul Rahman fell in a the nearby well. Some men tried to pull him
out, but he fought them off bravely and drowned. We cremated him and he
burned for three days. Your best friend, Salim Khan, is no more. He died
trying to fulfil his father's last wishes. His father had wished to be
buried at sea after he died. And your friend died while in the process of
digging a grave for his father. There isn't much more news this time.
Nothing much has happened.
P.S : Beta, I was going to send you some money but by the time I realized,
I had already sealed off this letter.

Wondering, rightly said - it is Surya's presence (and performance!) that may save Mani's face in tamil. But, he should forget about Yuva and start concentrating on making neat and powerful tamil films with a bit of style and realism, which is his forte!

sk,
This needn't be a rude shock to you,i have read even worser posts on ARR,these ppl may or may not like him as an MD,they are entitled to their opinion and their expression, such things can be discussed here...we can agree or disagree, but these fanatics..don't even treat ARR as a human being, and there were posts in the other threads ridiculing ARR's religion, his mother and all that grossly indecent stuff,i condemned it,but none joined me to condemn, looks like this forum allows that all, these ppl hate ARR for many other reasons other than his music, they hate him personally..so the question of decency never comes there...point of objective criticism has no place here...
What's a big diff between these ppl and those politicians...i am wondering what music they were listening to all these days...they don't have even the basic human sense, then their talks abt music..ragas..and blahs blahs prove plain hypocrisy and bundle of baloney..that's it.

Nattamai
I too agree that Mani never accepted that his source of inspiration for 'Nayagan' came from 'The godfather',(as such even 'Once upon a time in America' must be the source for that idea where kamal hides the bag ny throwing them into the water with salt bags tied),but Mani has come a long way from it..even 'agni natchathiram'
hospital scenes have 'Godfather' inspiration .
We were talking abt Mani and kamal in recent times....here .but even now Kamal never acknowledges the source. As for as RKC's cinematography..i am not able to comment on it...ven if it's true as you said,i think we are talking abt Mani...not RKC anyway.
My criticism on Kamal was a bit rude ,that came only b'cos of those mindless statements like 'Kamal beat Mani' etc,etc fanatic statements came around...but i apologise,i could have toned down it.

Hindu's Review
AS LONG as the treatment is fresh and the presentation original, the maker's source of inspiration is immaterial. Every frame of Madras Talkies' "Aayudha Ezhuthu" bears the Mani Ratnam stamp and that's what matters. If silence and secrecy can stoke up interest, it has. And again, if the stature of a director can hype up a project, it has. Writer-director Mani Ratnam's "Aayudha Ezhuthu" comes with an A certificate.
The way the film goes on a rewind trip again and again and returns to the sequence from where it swung backwards, is typical of Mani Ratnam, a style he adopted effectively in "Alai Paayudhae." And Sujatha's dialogue in the romantic sequences seems to follow a predictable pattern in Mani's films.
The entire approach is positive and hence heartening. Three totally different characters converge at a point. And though diametrically opposite in attitude and aspirations each one's life gets tangled with the other. While Michael (Surya) is the fiery young man with lofty ideals, Arjun (Siddharth) is filled with dreams of making it big in the U.S. At the bottom most rung of the social ladder is Inba (Madhavan), a reckless, impulsive and hardened ruffian, who aspires to become a bigwig in politics. The scene opens with Inba, hired by Minister Selvanayakam to kill Michael, who is incensed by the dystopia that exists in the name of governance. Shooting him down at point blank range Inba flees, but the villains' plans turn awry. Madhavan donning the role of a henchman sparkles as an anti-hero — a character that ought to find a very special place in his repertoire. His crudeness, gait, demeanour and expressions vary strikingly from what he's done so far. The undercurrent of pathos is a strong point of the character.
The screen space that Madhavan and Meera Jasmine share is replete with noisy and violent romance. None but Mani Ratnam could have so successfully envisaged Madhavan in such a role.
Surya is the pivot. The actor who has been blessed with a winning streak in recent times makes a mark yet again.
The smirk on his lips and the quiet dignity in his eyes every time he locks horns with the villain, and his enjoyable interludes with Gitanjali (Esha Deol), make Surya's portrayal commendable. It is a neat essay from Siddharth.
Among the heroines, Meera Jasmine as Sasi proves an apt foil for the thug Inba. Her diction shows that the actress has worked hard to get the tone and lingo right. "Aayudha ... " marks Esha's debut in Tamil — a lucky break. Trisha is appealing. But she can surely do better in pronunciation, if she plans to dub for herself in the future.
Of the smaller characters, Sriman as Madhavan's friend Guna is natural, Archana (whose realistic enactment in off beat films have gained notice) as his wife and Sasi's friend is expressive and Praveen as Madhavan's brother comes out with an effective, underplayed portrayal.
A perfect icing on this crop of small characters is Bharatiraja with his glib tongue and ruthless acts. As they are in the same league you notice many similarities between Selvanayakam and the conniving underworld don of "Agni Nakshatram," so easily and effectively played by Umapathy.
A. R. Rahman's songs appeal more on screen because when placed contextually the impact seems enhanced. Re-recording is another excellent highlight. Be it tension or gentle love, the music in the background scores. Looks like Ravi K. Chandran's camera goes wild with joy especially when shooting on the seaside. And the result is visual splendour for the viewer. The lighting complements Sabu Cyril's sets at every point and ushers in the right mood of each sequence. "Jana Gana Mana" and "Yaakkai Thiri" stand apart for the lyric (Vairamuthu) value. The manner in which the songs have been filmed add lustre. The admirable use of sync sound makes sound recordist Robert Taylor's work significant. The realism in the fights speaks volumes about Vikram Dharma's skilful stunt choreography.
If in spite of Sreekar Prasad's deft editing, the pace slows down considerably towards the end, it is probably because even after nearly three-fourths of the film is over, many loose ends lie waiting to be tied up.
You enter with expectation and walk out with satisfaction. Tamil cinema is in dire need of more such makers as Mani Ratnam.

Aswathama,
U've tried ur best to adapt that Sardar joke as Rahman's mom's... the least u could do was try editting all the places w/ the word "Sardars"!
But posting that, u've made it evident that u'r tryin to go all out to bring down Rahman. The film's music is a hit.. It crossed the 1 lakh unit barrier in a record 3 days.. So while u failed to bring him down w/ the BGM bit, and indirectly attacked him thru Mani, U realised u fell short of the kinda vindictiveness u normally achieve while targetting ARR.
In simpler words... Get a life.
