Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Song of the Day: kanaa kaaNum kaNgaL mella from agni saatchi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kanaa.rm
- MD: MSV. Sung by SPB with a brief recital of a poem by Saritha. Lyrics by Vaali.
- I consider this song to be among the ten best of SPB. He sings this so beautifully. Besides being a thaalaattu song, there is a tinge of sadness, a tinge of melancholy and a glimmer of hope. Vaali has written excellent lyrics, that reflects the situation of the song.
kanaa kaaNum kaNgaL mella
urangaadhO paadal solla
nilaak kaala mEgam ellaam
ulaap pOgum nEram kaNNE!
Then he describes Saritha's character, a question struggling to find its answer. Balachandar couldn't have put it better:
kumari uruvam kuzhandhai uLLam
reNdum onRaana maayam neeyO
thalaivan madiyil magaLin vadivil thoongum sEyO!
nodiyil naaLthOrum niRam maaRum dhEvi
vidai thaan kidaikkaamal thadumaarum kELvi!
viLakku ERRi vaiththaal kooda nizhal pOlath thOnRum nijamE,nizhal pOlath thOnRum nijamE.
In the movie, Saritha has a penchant for the verse, which Vaali brings out like this:
pudhiyak kavidhai punaiyum kuyilE
nenjil uNdaanak kaayam enna?
ninaivu alaigaL neruppil kuLikkum bhaavam enna
and then a hope for the future:
kizhakku veLukkaamal irukkaadhu vaanam
vidiyum naaL paarththu iruppEnE naanum
varungaalam inbam enRu nigazhkaalam koorum kaNNE, nigazhkaalam koorum kaNNE.
- The interludes show the mental trauma that Saritha goes through, though a bit overdone, IMO. This is one of the last great songs from MSV. This came out in 1981/82.

- From http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/6998.2063.22:26:12.html , cp writes:
Picturisation of love songs is rather a common aspect in tamil movies and doesn't demand much acting talents from the concerned actors. There aren't many songs which explain the emotional side and psychology of a person in a real-life situation. I would say that "kana kAnum kangaL mella" in Agni Satchi and "Thondu thottu indru varai" in Avatharam are those songs which beautifully those human feelings.
1)"kana kAnum kaNgaL mella" - is a song par excellence. Saritha's wonderful acting adds to the picturisation. Saritha suffers from a emotional breakdown. Sivakumar is her husband who understands her problem and tries to make her sleep and forget all her problems. The Director has beautifully portrayed Saritha's emotional struggles as she imagines a lady who rather dances(rather tramples ) in a deserted land . Sivakumar treats her like a child and tries to pacifies her. Saritha is shown to be in a confused state as she could not understand herself as sometimes she is alright and often her mind touches the lowest ebb of pathos. Sivakumar's caring and love for his wife is shown in the by his expressions(his varuththam and yekkam in his eyes )and the blow-up shot of Saritha he has in his bedroom (appa! andha kaNgaL...).

Saravanan and other friends,
Is ' 'rayil payaNaththin thuNaiyaay avaL vandhaaL' part of 'en kadahai mudiyum nEramidhu'?
In ' koodaiyila karuvaadu....', you have some female(!) voices shouting ' kokkorak kOzhi koovuRa vEla raajaathi raajan vaaraaNdee munnE...'
Some tidbits about OTR:
This was one film (1980)where every faculty was a newcomer except the singers! Naturally, there were no takers among distributors. (Prior to this, at least some areas were left to old timers, when one was experimenting with, say, new actors only.)
The producer,(some Muslim gentleman from MayilaaduthuRai, I don't recall the name)is said to have sold off hiis mangroves to take up distribution himself! After a few dull weeks, the film picked up thro' word of mouth and wow! what a run it had! The producer was bursting at the seams with moolah!

..and even TR wasnt able to see the movie, due to some problem with the producer... he was made to stand outside Alankar theater (now defunct) without tickets for him..!!!

Kanaak kaaNum kaNkaL mella is a wondeful song bb - thanks a lot for this selection !
For some reason, I was thinking this as an IR song till few years back when I saw the movie.
As the movie was released when IR was TFM's most successful MD .. With NOM to MSV, I still believe the song is very IRish !

Listening to the song I find that the thamiz kolai was initially started by MSV :-) Listen to the lady singer's rendition. "en netriyil neeRu pOl ittuk koLgirEn" is rendered as if she learned tamil hte day before (or probably never) :-) A great song from a great singer and jarring orchestration that distorts the melody flow.

Excellent selection !!! I really loved the song when I heard the song first time in the year 1982 (Released on this year only). But later (Year 1990) when I saw the film with this song, I just experienced this song with the story, lyrics....the tune ....che...I just can not explain it through words..only can be experienced with soul..what a great tune by our great MSV. I am proud to be a tamilian and thanking GOD to give me birth in this era (MSV). And moreover, this is the first song I catched in my little keyboard (CASIO) on my own. Only because of this tune penetrated into my heart. Great MSV.... Thanking Balachander to give a situation for tuning and composing this song...Thanks to Vaali for long lasting lyrics after Kannadasan. SPB...your voice is just SUPERB.
Whenever, I feel like, immediately I play this song in my CASIO keyboard. Any body interested to know the notes, please post your query. I will give you the complete notation.
"FREE always will not have Value"..MSV is the original talented musician and he does not deserve for the national award...instead a MSV award should be initiated for the others....
Loving,

This is a Visu masterpiece in an otherwise affected film which had no crebility. KB was obsessed with giving Saritha all the scenes to the extent of spoiling the show. Sivakumar gamely tries to hang on but the faulty script makes his effort go down the drain. But this song is exceptional.

A very soothing song... As NagaS had said, I thought it was an IR song till today and it does look IR-ish... The picturisation of the song was not that catchy though.... but I agree that it was within the lines of the song's situation...

Sravanan - that is news ! I am surprised that Sartiha could sing / talk in shruthi.
If I have a chance, I will ask SPB to sing this song personally and record the voice track alone and listen to it tirelessly.

Sounds IRish? Tamizh Kolai etc..
Well.Men with hidden agenda are at it again.Sathamillal Saniyadikkum velai.A nice "sappai kattu" saying "listen to it tirelessly".Damage is done.
MSV has to get these insults from know-all s who do not have the faintest idea of his genius and music.
MS,your statement may go well with the people who jack-up BBC poll(In DMK s terminology "Vakku Segarippu pani").But please understand that your majority is restricted this forum. Please open up your window, mind and heart to see whats happening around. With your long presence in this forum you may very well get this post deleted. But i pray to almighty to wake you "Rip-Van s army" (should i say bunch of individuals!)at the earliest.
To praise IR ,your Taliban ,with scant respect for any other MD, pull them down.
1.You do not know who the singer was.
2.You do not know the song situation.
Still ,you go ahead making loose comments.

Are you game for these veiled ,intended, sadistic offences even in this thread?

ooh..thanks for a fine piece of advice tho it is totally unwanted :-) Criticizm unleashed on MSV with respect to this song stays tho it was relevant only for this song.
Thamiz kolai - idhai paththi solradhu konjam thamiz therindhirundhal pOdhum. enakku konjam thamiz theriyum.
singer - ella singer i yum nyaabagam vechchukkaradhu mudiyaadha kaariyam. thEvai illaadha ondru. singer theiryavillai enbadhaal paadal nandraaga illai endru solla koodaadhu endru solvadhil enakku udanpaadu illai. There are songs like "kaadhalenum kOvil katti vaiththen nenjil" which I consider to be great inspite of the singer being unknown to me till date. A parallel can be drawn for songs I criticize and I do not find any offensiveness in my post. In fact there are many songs in which MSV's orch'n sounds a little too jarring and saying that loud does not necessarily demean him or degrade the respect we have for this wonderful composer. All said, I guess this post is almost like a regular explanation provided in just any other IR X ARR X MSV thread which is clearly not the kind of content this thread needs. Hence, this will be my first and last post in asserting my objectivity and candor and unless I am proved and/or made believe to be wrong, I am not eating my words back. Thank you very much.
