I read the news item that IR and BR have joined together in a movie named ironically as Manasthan.
If BR's recent moves were successful or IR's recent compositions were successful i doubt this joining together of old friends wud never have taken place. I think these two have joined together to bring their sagging popularity back up. Whatever happened to all their spleen splitting venom which they gleefully poured over each other when they split ?

They didnt spill any venom. I think you are confusing with VM!. Can you recall any bitter comments between these two?. All you could have heard is, we are not working together because of some differences.
This is not politics, when they are confortable they can work together, if they are not they part ways. Its a welcome change by all means!.

and iam 100% sure its going to be an utter flop.... BR seems to have lost his touch totally, and we now know what the people's taste is as far as music is concerned (well, certainly its not IR loss, but ours)....

hi, Sabesan
I think that you are wrong. We know that IR can lift a movie to another stage throw his music. And he can give some good music when its comes to gramiya movies. For exampel Mudhal Mariyathai. BR have gone to IR after he has taken the movie in confusing about to release it (he thinks that it wouldn't be a hit), IR says to BR just give the film to me and I'll garantee you the success. And today we all know how a big hit the movie was!!
I think that if it is true, then it will be a mega hit movie.

Isaifan...... hmmm i would also love it.... but man, i am pretty much sure that is not going to happen.... Hey Ram....... also BR did so many movies after that with IR, and we all know what stuff's BR had..... BR can't be a successful director anymore..... somehow he does'nt have the touch he once had.....

The thing is both IR and BR were good for 80's population. Movies with stories were accepted then. Now the taste has changed. Movies are seen as i don't know what. Both BR and IR have a been failures in hitting with the masses. What was BR's last hit (Karuthamma, if at all one calls it a hit) and IR's ????? I can't remember it. Should be something before ARR exploded on the scene with Roja. If BR takes this movie with his son again I am not going to watch it. Please guys do the same.

"and IR's ????? I can't remember it. Should be something before ARR exploded on the scene with Roja"
Sethu!
It came out much after ARR imploded with repetitive copies such as 'kaathalar thinam'.
Even mega hits like 'Devar Magan' and 'Veera'
came out after ARR's arrival.
You have such short memory Karthick.
No wonder you can't identify the songs of yesteryears that ARR songs are based on.

Not to mention Ponnumani, Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai, Chinna Gounder....

Chinna Gounder came much much before ARR's arrival Hari. Kadhalukku mariyadhai had just one hit song in it. The movie was a hit because of a different story line.

I think u have misunderstood me UV. I am a great fan of IR. But his hits have not gone down well with masses. ARR can pass of thagaradappa music as folk music in sangamam and padayappa and they have become hits. Hits meaning super hits. The movie sethu was hit. The songs have not reached the same height. I am lamenting about the way rasanai in tamil film audience has gone down. Ponnumani and Chinna gounder came in the era when IR can tune a film in 30 mins (chinna thambi). That was an era of IR geniusness. But what about NOW ?????

Yeah, I was mistaken abt C.G...
But look, u on the one hand say that rasanai has gone down,... and then lament that IR's ability to produce hits (talent?) has gone!! As far as I am concerned, only one of these is true.. and that is the first!
Look, as far as I am concerned, 3 songs in KM were sooper.. Thaalaatta Varuvaala, Pattaamboochchi (my favorite), and Aanandha Kuyilin paattu...
And then Meettaadha Oru veenai (Poonthottam - i wud rate this as one of IRs best songs ever), Yedho Yedho (Manam Virumbudhae Unnai), 3/4 songs from kaadhal kavidhai, Avadhaaram (Man - Thendral Vandhu), Nilavae Mugam Kaattu (2-3 decent songs), Sandhanam Thaechchaachchu (Rajkiran Movie), Allah Un Aanaippadi... Malayalam movies solla aarambichcha.. GURU (His best perhaps, if such a thing can be said among o many!!!!!), Yaathramozhi, I could go on and on...
I dont think IR has lost any talent.. no way!

Hari,
I think u r missing karthik's point...what I think he says is Raja has lost the knack of satisfying the masses (or shud i say, the taste of the public has changed and Raja is reluctant to change his style )
while I agree that all the songs u mentioned were good (except sandhanam thEchachu -bcos it was composed by KR ), the songs were never soooppper dooopper hits (except a few ).
One shud admit that the movies which were released after, say, 1994 were not hits just bcos of Raja (like in the 80s u had NinaivellAm nithya & iLamai kAlangaL, kAdhal oviyum... to name a few ). Raja was also part of the winning team in those hit movies in 90s where as in 80s the saying "to make a movie hit, all u need is a film roll and Ilayaraja" was true.
I cud not see any movie that was hit solely bcos of rahman's presence. (well, they say kAdhalar dhinam was a hit & sangamam was a hit but u know the truth ) The cheap tactics followed by the media reached a pinnacle when they released this platinum cd or whatever for rythm !!! A cassette shop owner, friend of mine, says it's all hoax...

Shankar,
U got what i am trying to say. Media hoax is another thing. They try to prop up all and sundry. When tajmahal was released i read it's writeup in cinema express or some magazine on the web. Manoj was called "Seeri ezhum siruthai" or something and "nalinamana nadanam"...... that's a whole different thread altogether.
Namma rasanaiyum keezha pochu nammakku kodukkapadara rasamum adhala badhalathukku pochu.

I was listening (trying to) to the top 10 in raaga.com. Arrgh..I could not stand most of the songs. Except for IR and ARR songs. Many of them remind me of hindi songs of yore or some other old tamil songs. Are there people listening to say 2yr old Deva song ? I doubt it. bhArathy song was at the bottom. Looks like our people's memory is very short term. They will never identify an inspiration/copy/recycle. The new directors have diluted IRs style so that the normal listener cannot differentiate IR from the rest (what a pity).ARR stands out because of his different style and sound. I think it is high time they included music in the high school curriculum. This will go a long way in improving the appreciation of music and there by promoting genuine artistes.
(Karthik, if you are a good programmer do you think your programming skills will go down ?? Composing is akin to that.Interests might change but innate ability is still there)

Under these circumstances, when we all agree that janatha's rasanai has gone down... do IR fans want him to really cater to it, and make gaana songs ??? (actually, I dont think he can even if he wants to... He can make music only the way he has been doing, thats "his" way ) Really, I mean is IR's popularity more important.. or good music to satisfy mself, and make me (us) happy, more important?
I cud say I dont care abt his popularity at all.. as long I get my satisfaction from Nilavae Mugam Kaattu, or Karisakkaattu Poovae.. (doesnt matter if they didnt sell, Ill move heaven and earth and get myself a CD or a cassette from some store)
but that wouldnt be entirely true.. bcos as u (karthik) rightly pointed out... its a marketing wizard's world. So we cud keep hearing more gems only if IR can work on better themes, which means the big directors and big budgets ... which means marketability.. actually the only reason I was majorly disappointed with IR not getting the National Award for Hey Ram was that.. I thought if he gets it,his market wud improve,...then the soundtrack wud be picked up by Sony or some other bigshot company... and then the symphony wud follow , bcos all the audio companies care abt is marketability (as they shud, from their point of view)...
Actually in summary, i think it wud be best if IR sticks to his style, and still regains his glory of old. That victory wud be the sweetest. In the meantime, lets wait, enjoy the good numbers as they come by... and hope.

Does anyone know who the Hero of Manasthan is going to be? If it is "Manoj", you can be assured that the movie will be a flop. It doesn't matter who scores the music!!

Kiru,
My innate ability would be there. But over a period of time i might not be inspired to create good programs. Just like Microsoft is seen as having killed netscape, i think our dropping rasanais might have cut down IR's inspiration. Kinda guess.
A person's priorities also change over a period of time. At the time when IR was creating not waves but Tsunamis with his music, he must have had no problems but now with 2 grown up sons and a grownup daughter, he must be worried about their future etc etc. These are reasons as to why his inspiration might have gone down.
I am not saying that his musical creations have gone down any way, but those are few reasons why a man's creativity might suffer.
