Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Didnt read this thread for a day and surely missed the discussions.RameshB you have mentioned some great songs (just memories :-). Yamuna nadhi inge and Geetha (from Aval) are songs that I like.
Shankar Ganesh provided fresh tunes when they burst out. I do remember watching Pugundha Veedu, Kannan Varuvaan and thoroughly enjoying the music.
Can someone list out the songs from pugundha veedu and kannan varuvaan ( I remember only one poovinum melliya poongodi - you should hear PS's version - sensual is the word, the other version by TMS was also enjoyable).
Thanks and great going bb, some SOTD suggestions (these songs are available at dhool.com)-just need to be discussed here
Naan nandri solven (from Kuzhandhaiyum deivamum)
Odivadhu pol (from Idayathil Nee - just listen to PBS and PS)

Pugundha veedu songs:
1. Naan unnai thedugirean naaL dhorum paadugirean - lovely solo by PS for Lakshmi
2. TMS also sings this for Ravichandran [Only pallavi, I think]
3. Pathos solo "KaNNan pirandha veLayile andha devaki irundhaaL kaavalile" by PS for Chnadrakala
4. Excellent ever green duet by AM Raja and Jikki for AVM Rajan and Chandrakala "Shenthamaraiye chenthen idhazhe" (after a long gap they sung together)
5.I remember one more duet by TMS + PS... Not very sure

great song bb.. you made my day..:).. IMHO, best song by IR in the last decade... Its really sad that IR doesnt produce these magical songs quite often these days... One of the few songs that really differentiates the greats from the ordinary.. This song stands close to 'Janani Janani' & 'poomalaiye' when u take IR as a singer.. thanks a ton...

congrats on reaching 200 days! It requires
a great discipline to present a song a day without
gaps. I think your passion for tfm and for sharing has given you the discipline. Keep it up.
Over the 200 days, the page has introduced me to unknown or half-forgotten gems which have entertained me and taught me. We have heard songs from far and wide, new and old.
It might be a good idea to create a discussion page/thread for each song or at least the masterpieces by masters. People can then add their observations, notes, lyrics, notation, midi, like a reference database. Now this information is thrown around in many many threads under different topics. By focusing on songs, (which are the heart of this group anyway), we can find a way to collect and index our collective knowledge of these. Let Thendral page be a starting point. What do you guys think?

Venkat, what an excellent write-up!!
I didn't look at this from the point of view of a vanjippaa before, especially because the song doesn't stick to a particular beat pattern.
In fact, the pallavi and anupallavi follow different beat structures (one is 5 beats, one is 4 beats, correct me if I am wrong).
I've added the write-up to the page. See here: http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thendral.html
RJay, good point, but I am not sure how this will work, given the large number of songs. I will try to do something at least for the SOTD songs.
Venkat, do you have that song "Odam kadal Oram"?

bb, I think the anupallavi lyrics should be
vandhu vandhu and not vandu vandhu.
- From: MS (@ 129.252.25.241)
on: Fri Apr 11 11:55:41 EDT 2003
The beat structure a li'l interesting. When the opening "thandhanana dhaana naana" ends exactly in 8, the following thendral vandhu line ends in 10th bar. Once again the line "vandhu vandhu pOgudhamma" ends in 8th bar. But I would not strictly say that it starts in 5 and goes to 4.
then|dral| van| dhu|
1| 1| 1| 1| =4
theeN| dum| pO | dhu|
2 |1 |2 |1 = 6
en| na| vaN| Na|
2 |1 |2 |1 = 6
mO| ma| na| su| la
5| 1| 1| 1| 16 = 24

GOod analysis of the phrase rythm, you can look at it this way:
Thendral vandhu (is actually a pickup phrase from previous measure)
Theendum podhu Enna vannamo
is a clever 4 beat phrase broken into 3 beat sections thus:
1..1 ..1. .1..
TheedumPo dhuEn naENna
1... .111 1... ....
Mo.. .manasu Le.. ....
Sing it like: Daada Daada Daada Daada Daaa
-dadadaDaaa
This trick of breaking 4-beat to 3-beat emphasis
is used in many song and makes the melody intriguing.
The 4 note pattern dadadada is the seed for the song - it occurs in (thendral vandhu ), (manasule)
(vannamamma), (chinnappennae). Note that every
line of pallavi, anupallavi, closure, ends with this seed rythm. It is even used as the drumbeat of the first interlude starting.

RJAY,
The pallavi of this song uses similar style of by Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's desiring". Actually, the song is set to slow four beat cycle. The counting is done as:
1-trip-let 2-trip-let 3-trip-let 4-trip-let
Basically, you place three notes between beats instead of 2, 4, 8 or 16.
1-triplet 2-triplet
Thendral Vandhu
3-triplet 4-triplet
Theendum Podhu
5-triplet 6-triplet
Enna Enna
7 8 1 2-triplet
Mo manasu
3 4 5 6 7 8
Le.. ....
Actually, sing with 1-triplet 2-triplet ... it will exactly.

'Thendral vandhu' is not triplet, sridhar!
It is the last four beats from previous measure
the rest, you are right.

I forgot to mention this: When searching for info on this song in newtfmpage, I found that this is the song that many many people have put in as the song of the decade, or song of the century, or top 25 songs in tfm or top 10 songs of IR.

certainly bb, this is one of the greatest songs of tfm. the melody, the lyrics, the rendition, the orchestration - it excels in every aspect. it deserves to be the 200th song of SOTD.
and congrats on the 200th run - a job well done and which pleased tfm fans like me everyday. got to hear and discuss some rare songs, forgotten ones and some great ones like todays song. appreciate your efforts.

Thanks bb, for featuring one of my all-time favorites of IR!
I first heard this song while watching TV! The song created such an impact that I kept humming this number for the rest of the week. The song had the everything going in perfect harmony: the melody, the lyrics, the feel, the sound, the orchestration.. Wow!
I remember going to the nearest store the very evening to buy 'AvathAram'. The salesman in the Audio shop tried in vain to influence: 'Art movie saar'. He suggested I buy 'Mr. Romeo' and 'Raasaiya' instead (Prabhu Deva was the flavor of the day then)!
