pk! pl give us" don't read-or write in tamil" a break.
I suffer enough as it is when I cannot decipher the Tamil mail list which comes to my house , specially about the next release in town. Too old to learn to read and write I guess.

pk - I think there are enought sites where discussions are held in Tamil. We use romanised versions here for our comfort level - and I think this compromise itself is commendable.
Furthermore, one don't have to insist on writing in Tamil to prove one's Tamizh patru! That we are here in this forum is proof enough!!
Kitcha-thambi, Gopal poal Tamizh-allathevargalum inthe discussionil kalanthukolvathu Thamizhargallana namakkuthaaney perumai.
On top of that we have had instances of non-Indians entering and participating in this site. Why restrict it to Tamil-literates only?
Bones - In Malaysia, about 10% of the population are Indians and of these about 65% are Tamils. The rest are Malayalees, Telugus, Gujeratis, Kannadas, Sikhs, Sindis, and other N. Indians, in that order. Almost all S. Indians can speak Tamil while most N. Indians can understand Tamil. With this kind of composition, Tamil is sort of the NL for the Indians in Malaysia. However, very few non-Tamils can read or write in Tamil, but they are almost 100% Tamilians in all aspects. (Please excuse me for the short Geography lesson!)
And you don't have to fear of any declien in Tamil usage in the future either. There are very languages in the world where speakers are as fiercely protective and loyal as speakers of Tamil language! US-sil yeppediyoa?!

Guys, really nice to know your feelings.
As long as you are comfortable and if you can enjoy, no problem.

why I asked this question? It will be real fun and exciting if you talk (or type) in your mother language. Is there any tamil chat ( typing should be in Tamil?) in the net? or any one have that idea? I can involve in that? ( may be, i have to talk to anjal font guys???)

pk - What do your initials stand for? Somehow I get the feeling that the people with the greatest Tamizh patru are those living outside India. Am I right?

Great Kumar! How did you make it possible? If you could tell us we can all communicate in tamil.
- From: Rajaraman (@ 192.122.135.224)
on: Wed Sep 10 22:09:11 EDT 1997
This is possible with "FONT" tag with FACE
attribute set to a font like Inaimathi/Mylai.
However we discourage this because
1. Your font may not be viewable by others
2. There are people who can't read but
understand tamil.
Let's follow transliterated tamil only.
thanks

I agree with Rajaraman. There are many Non-Tamilians, people who were brought up elsewhere etc who are contributing valuble ideas. They may be affected.
Apart from them, there are a few Tamilnadu Tamilians who cannot read Tamil. Why should they be at a disadvantage for a decision taken by their parents?

cp and others:
We can better be comtept with
with transliterated script, it takes
a lot of cut and paste job to
get that tamil script, Apart from the
other disadvantages.
To tamil_script_theriyathvargal.
(Non TFM - sorry)
I will say tamil script is the
easiest of all indian languges.
Because it doest have combined
letters like ththa, kra, dhya
etc. More over it phonetic,
just read as we write,
unlike some rules like 'tha'
comming as last letter in word
should be 'th' in hindi etc.
Only disadvantage is some letters
have inconsistent shape and No ga,
ba, dha etc..
whatever it may be, it wont take more than
a week to learn the script.
So guys rush to buy a 'arichuvadi'
now..
