This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

Manisegaran, you have left out the great 'kalaimagaL enakkoru ANai ittAL', an awesome TMS-PS number. Hail TMS !!!

Few more missing songs - aathi parasakthi has a short song set to the tune of ayigiri nandini (mahishasura mardhini stotram) when S Varalakshmi kills (mahisha?)asura.
thirumaal perumai - Nagesh in the kathakaalakshepam that is the frame for the individual stories sings maname kanamum maravathey jagannaathan malar pathamey (voice SG). Of course, the original appears in MS Subbulakshmi's voice in Savithri (1940?) - so the composition is not KVM's, but the orchestration probably is.
Didn't sakthi leelai also come out at the same time? Was it by KVM, kunnakudi or someone else?

Manisegaran: Gurudakshinai was also an APN/KVM movie made under the Sri Vijayalakshmi Pictures banner. Was this a success/failure? Going by the starcast (Sivaji, J, Padmini) seems like it could have been one - however, none of the songs appears to have been a big hit.
Sampoorna Ramayanam remade in color in 1972? also had music by KVM - the film has a multilingual soundtrack in tamil/telugu/hindi. I believe both the VCD and a DVD are available.
KVM also gave music for Gnanakuzhanthai (1979) and Deiva Thirumanangal (late 70s) two more purana-based movies, no doubt inspired by the 60s APN efforts.
Raj: one correction - the sambo mahadeva song is not a SG-PS duet. PS comes in at the end to recite a devaram verse (naathan thaaL vaazhga) and SG's song is over by the time she starts.

GananakKuzandthai has only one good song and very good one.
"Osaiiiiii Sura laya osai kodutha nayahiye" by PS/VJ (I dont remember. mostly PS).

K: A duet means there is give and take (alternating) between the male and female voices. There are any number of instances with back-to-back songs sung in different voices that are clubbed together for convenience - e.g. mannavan vanthaanadi begins with a chorus singing kalaimagaL thuNai kondu vinai venRu pugazh konda kaavalan vaazhga vaazhga... Should we call mannavan vanthaanadi PS with chorus? Karnan has 4 poets reciting verses with 4 different voices - is this a (4-way) duet?
GR: Gnanakuzhanthai has several devaaram verses set to tune by KVM - thOdudaiya seviyan (PS), maasil veeNaiyum (TMS), the poompaavai sequence (SPB) etc. Apart from this is the VJ-TMS duet paalOdu then kalantha abhishegam and VJ's solo poothathu kamalam. All are good songs, though I remember only thOdudaiya seviyan, osai kodutha (PS), and paalOdu getting air time.

kik, I saw that movie long back and I dont remember the other songs. But "Osai Kodutha Naayahi" is still in my mind. So I could have concluded wrongly. any way to get those songs?
Deivath Thirumanagkal has 3-MDs, 3-Directors.
KVM - Meenatchi Thirumanam
GKV - Valli Thirumanam
MSV - Srinivasa Thirumanam (Directed By Sankar)
I dont remember other directors.

dear raj,
if any song is in chorus, they should be there for the full song - mannavan vandhaanadi song - the chorus starts in the beginning and after that only PS (in the film only padmini dances and nobody else) - therefore, mannavan vandhaanadi song is PS only.
Similarly, the song in thiruvilaiyaadal cannot be termed as a duet.

GR: Issue with sharing the songs is the same as what we discussed before. As you know from the VJ thread, I put a bunch of VJ solos and duets in my yahoo briefcase. Naaz tried it and said he could not access it - not sure if he tried the right place. I gave the link in that thread. The songs are there still!

Ragapravaham Sundar: Are you not the person running the vintage heritage society in chennai? Can you post the planned schedule of events (music programs, movie screenings,...)? I plan to be in chennai this dec/jan and would love to attend the programs - last time I noticed that I discovered the programs after the fact in the Hindu's reviews. Also, any pointers on sources for recording vintage songs or collectors willing to play the songs so we can at least hear them?
On the movies you list, I like the aadavantha deivam title song a lot. sampoorna ramayanam - I initially didn't like the songs in this movie apart from the popular CSJ numbers. But, I watched the movie again after Manisegaran's write-up in this thread and really enjoyed all of them. I noticed that a couple songs from Manisegaran's list were missing - probably cut from the print and the video. indru pOi naaLai vaarai picturization was superb.
AVR: They are marked public - directory songs2 and I believe the address is briefcase.yahoo.com/kishorekca. If anyone has a yahoo id to test, pl email me at kishorekca@yahoo.com and we'll test it.
BTW listened to 2 songs that appear to be based on the same melody by KVM (same singers: TMS, PS):
maganE nee kEL:
oththa kallu mookkuthi jolikkuthadi
kittE vanthu mutham thara thadukkuthadi
kaattu rOjaa:
chinna chinna kannanukku enna vEndum
singaara mozhi sollum poNNu vEndum
The first has a folk-song style with nadaswaram in the interludes and a strong beat. The second has a jazzy interpretation right from the opening bars and the instruments are kept to a minimum overall. Are these the same raagam?

PART 26
FAMOUS MOVIES OF THE 1950s
In this section I am discussing some of the best films and songs of the 1950s. Not all songs of the films of the 1950s were great hits. KVM had lesser films in the 1950s and it was only in he 1960s that he had more chances knocking at his door. Therefore I am picking only films and songs that created some impact on the fans.
MUDALAI (1957)
This is a M.A. Venu Pictures directed by Mukta Seenivasan. Mukta R. Seenivasan himself has said in an interview that the film was a low budget movie taken with a budding actress Devika and an upcoming actor S.S. Rajendran. But the movie was completely salvaged by KVM’s music. According to Mukta Seenivasan this movie was a great success in those days:
There is a solo by Jikki
YAVVANNA RAANITHAAN
ISAI PAADUM VAANITHAAN
EN MELE AASAI KOLLUM
ILAINYARUM KODITHAAN
M.S. Rajeswary gives this solo:
ENGIRUNTHO VANTHAAR EN
ITHAYAM KAVARNTHAAR-
EN VAAZHVIL NAAN KANDA MIGA NALLAVAR
There is a duet by T.M.S and M.S. Rajeswary
KUNGUMA POTTUKKAARA
KONA KIRAPPUKKAARA
UNNAIYE NAAN MARAVENE
MATHAPPU SELAIKKARI
MAGHIZHAMBOO RAVIKKAIKAARI
UNNAIYE NAAN MARAVENE
Rathnamala and G. Kasthuri sing this song:
SIKKANAMA VAAZHANUM
SERTHU VAIKKA PAZHAGANUM
The all time popular song of TMS is:
ERIKKARAYIN MELE
PORAVALE PON MAYILE
ENNARUMAI KAATHALIYE
ENNAI KONJAM PAARU NEEYE
ANNAM POLA NADAI NADANTHU
SENDRIDUM MAYILE
AASAI THEERA NILLU KONJAM
PESUVOM KUYILE
THENNAI MARACHOLAIYILE
CHITTU POLE PORA PENNE
CHITTU POLE PORA PENNE
NILLU KONJAM NAANUM VAAREN
SERNTHU PESI POVOM KANNE
ANNAM POLE NADAI NADANTHU SENDRIDUM MAYILE
AASAI THEERA NILLU KNOJAM PESUVOM KUYILE
MAAMARA THOPPINILE
MACHAAN VARUM VELAYILE
KOBAM KONDA MAANAI POLE
ODALAMO PEN MAYILE
ANNAM POLE NADAI NADANTHU SENDRIDUM MAYILE
AASAI THEERA NILLU KNOJAM PESUVOM KUYILE
M.S. Rajeswary sings another song:
AASAI KALYANAM-NALLA
ANBU KALYANAM
ATHI VIRAIVIL AVARKKUM ENAKKUM
NADAKKUM KALYANAM
Seergazhi Govindarajan comes with a solo:
KAALAMADI KAALAM KALI
KAALAMADI KAALAM
There is a group song by Sundram, Ponnusamy, Ratnamala, and Kasthuri:
ENGA MUTHALALI
THANGA MUTHALI
EZHAIGALIN THUYARAI NEEKUM
NALLA MUDALAALI
This is a simple film that became a hit on account of the good songs and the storyline of an employer supporting the working society.

SECTION 27
THAI PIRANTHAAL VAZHI PIRAKKUM (1958)
This is a film starred by S.S. Rajendran, Prem Nasir, MN Rajam and Rajasulochana with some of the very best songs by KVM. This was certainly a milestone in the musical legacy of KVM, but did not do very well in the box office. This film boasts of many good songs sung by a variety of singers.
A famous song by Jikki goes:
THAI PIRANTHAAL VAZHI PIRAKKUM
THANGAMEY THANGAM
THANGACHAMBA NEL VILAYUM
THANGAME THANGAM
T.M.S sings a comedy song:
NINAICHATHU ONNU
NADANTHATHU ONNU
ATHANALE THAVIKKUTHU AMMAKKANNU
Seergazhi and Jamunarani give this wonderful song:
SOLLATTUMA SOLLATTUMA
RAGASIYATHAI SOLLATTUMA
THULLI ODUM KAALAIGALA
ULLAKKATHAI SOLLATTUMA
T. M. S. and R. Balasaraswathy Devi give this sad duet, which is the only song they had sung together:
EZHIYORAI THAAZHTHI
VALIYORAI VAAZTHUM
ULAGE UN SEYALTHAAN MAARATHO
K. Jamunarani gives this most wonderful song:
KAALAM SIRITHU
KANAVUGAL PERITHU
KAVALAI PADUVATHEN MANATHU
SOLAI YAVVANAM KONJUM MOGANAM
PIRIVU ENBATHE ARITHU
M.S. Rajeswary sings this song penned by PK Krishnamurthy:
MANNUKKU MARAM BARAMA
MARATHUKKU KODI BAARAMA
ILAIKKU KAAI BARAMA
PETREDUTHA KUZHANTHAI
THAAIKKU BAARAMAA
There is a song that Kannadasan wrote while waiting in his car for the train to cross at a railway crossing. Trichy Loganathan took note of the song that Kannadasan wrote on a cigarette packet paper, and requested Kannadasan that he be given the chance to sing that song when the song is recorded later. Kannadasan allowed this, and that great song is:
ASAIYE ALAIPOLE
NAAMELLAM ATHAN MELE
ODAM POLE AADIDUVOME
VAAZHNAALILE
We have already spoken of the great song by Seergazhi Govindarajan but it is still worth going through the beautiful poetic lines of Suratha:
AMUTHUM THENUM ETHARKU-NEE
ARUGINIL IRUKKAYILE ENAKKU
ARUVI THARUM KULIR NEER ANBEY INIMEL
ATHUVUM SUDU NEER AAGUM NAMAKKU
ATHUVUM SUDU NEER AAGUM NAMAKKU
(AMUTHUM THENUM)
NILAVIN NIZHALO NIN VATHANAM
PUTHU NILAI KANNADIYO UNTHAN KANNAM
MALAYIL PIRAVAA MAAMANIYE NAAN
KOIYUM KOIYAA KANIYE
VAAN AMUTHUM THENUM ETHARKU
VIZHIYALE KAATHAL KATHAI PESU
MALAR KAIYALE SANTHANAM POOSU
THAMIZH MOZHI POLE SUVAIYOOTTUM SENTHENE
UDAL NAAN UYIR NEE THAANE
VAAN AMUTHUM THENUM ETHARKU
NEE ARUGINILI IRUKKAYILE ENAKKU.
As mentioned earlier, Seergazhi Goivindarajan used to sing this cong after the interlude at carnatic song functions. KVM himself has a tremendous liking for this song. This song has brought so much name and fame to Suratha the lyricist, KVM the composer, and Seergazhi Govinderajan the singer, not leaving out Prem Nasir who gave lip movements in the film.
