"Tune alone is not enough for a song to be a hit."
I do not know if ARR is ignorant of hits of yesteryears or if he seriously believes this.
What about songs from "Thendrale Ennai Thodu"? What was special about the scenes in that movie that the songs were hits?
Sorry, Mr. Rahman, I think you have missed the point. The majority of film-goers remember the songs and NOT the scenes for the songs. Perhaps this explains why ARR's songs and the sequences have very little correlation.

Great translation. Next time ARR gives
an interview, I am sure we will look for your
translations..
The interview shows the total dedication
to music and its quality ARR has!
Srikanth
I too noticed that Kannum Kannum from Thiruda
Thiruda was in Siva ranjani. That song reminded
me of MSV's Enna Kobam sollu Bama. The pallavi makes innovative use of a soga ragam (Sivaranjani?),
In that song the Jazz piano and vocal harmonies are outstanding!

A very nice interview. Thanks a lot Kamesh. I think in one of his very earlier (really early) interviews, he had appreciated IR's "Inji Iduppazhagi..". Even though I am a DHF fan of IR, at times I feel quite happy for ARR....he has talent and that is not going wasted. Moreover, I should accept that he is much more humble when compared to IR.
But, IR is "engoyo.." in music, whatever his personality is like. Call him Arrogant, Stupid, Imature or Childish.....none of the present day songs (including ARR's or even IR's) can match the 80's.

ARR is very talented and a very good melody maker. But now and then I hear songs from other sources which sound very similar to ARRs which raises doubt in my mind about his ethics and integrity.
For eg. recently I bought the NSsi NSsi, Khaled CD. One of the songs has a instrument arrangement very similar to 'thangath thAmarai magalE'.
It is really amazing why talented people like him would taint their reputation with doing things like this.

Hi Sarath Kumar,
Thank you very much for your compliments. It is only fans like you that keep me motivated to make more and more fine music. I am very glad that you liked Mudhalvan songs. Of course, I am dependent on the prayer and wishes of true fans like you for my success. Please do me a favor. Could you please go to a temple in KL and do an archchanai with 1008 cocoanuts, paalabishEgam with 1008 litres of milk, and angapradhakshaNam around the temple 18 times. This will ensure that my success is everlasting.

"There are 72 melakartha ragas and janyas. but still you use kaanada, anandha bairavi, hindolam,
kedaram, madyamavati etc. Why do you repeat? "
It seems to be a fashion among the crop of young singers and music directors alike to proclaim that they have a knowledge of carnatic music.. Hinting at carnatic ragas sans most of the valid gamakas as rendered in ARR film songs is not good enough to make statements like "I use carnatic ragas in this or that song ...ta da ta da ".
I wish ARR were much more humble towards this great tradition that was shaped by saints like Dikshiter & tyagaraja not market forces of the 90's.
A casual glance thru the repertoire/compositions in TFM of the past indicates a usage of amazing variety of mela kartas & Janyas and rhythms(5/4,7/4, 9/8). Too bad ARR is not too keen acknowledging of some of his precessor's legacy. Also I'd like to add that ARR harmonic & rhythmic sense may be eons ahead of his cliched Hindi counterparts, but pretty stale compared to IR. What he calls bluesy or Jazzy in his music does not even come close to elevator or smooth Jazz( as it is known in US)of the Dave Grusin kinds(music director of the Firm, Tootsie etc).

It's really wonderful to read such an enthusiastic translation. It's very obvious that kamesh enjoyed doing it and we as well. kamesh, but you can avoid unmindful spelling errors by double checking it. Thanx anyway.............hey, also is the reply for Sarath kumar really the work of ARR or you.......?
