K.J. Yesudas is among 27 eminent Indians selected for the Padma Bhushan award this year. The names of the winners were announced as part of the Republic Day celebrations. This is a very fitting award for one of the greatest singers that India has ever produced. Congratulations, KJY!!

great news...congratulations to kj yesudas!
by the way, does anyone know what 'padma bhushan' actually means? i know that it's the second in the row, padma shri before it and padma vibhusan coming after it...what's the exact meanings of the words?
and is it really true that illayaraja hasn't even got the padma shri award? couldn't believe it...really strange i should say...

well raycas-if that is an attempt at being sarcastic-it is in poor taste since MSV,KVM and IR all have not got any of these padmas.and these are chaps are more deserving than any of the current generation.unfortunately, they still have not.i wish they give it one day, and they turn it down like shivaji did for his national award for thevar magan.
If it is a sincere query-yes.

Raycas,
Padma Bhushan ranks first in civilian awards, then comes Padma Vibhushan and then Padmashri

Raycas,
A relevant link.

" in practice, most initial appointments have been to Padma Shri, with subsequent promotions to Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan representing continued national service of an increasingly high order, although direct appointments to higher levels of the award have been rarely noted."
Not sure where Padma Vibhushan ranks, maybe higher than Padma Bhushan.

You are wrong! The order is Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and then Padma Vibhushan. KJY won his Padma Shri in the 1970-s.

ARR should have received it because he is a creator. KJY is only a singer.

yaaro,
hey, it was a damn sincere query! don't take everything i write in the wrong sense...as i have written in the past, i'm rather new to the tfm field, so i don't know who has already got which award. and so i was surprised to hear that such a famous musician like illayaraja still hasn't got even padma shri....but isn't illayaraja also famous for some sort of eccentricity? isn't it because of that he doesn't have many friends in his field (movie and music field). or am i completely wrong now? cause i've heard something like that about him often...
i'm always trying to minimize sarcastic comments as much as possible (only sometimes i have to, when writing in spb threads, to people like raghu and co.)
but does anyone know the meaning of 'bhushan' and 'vibhushan'? 'padma' means 'lotus' i think...
kjyfan, (yeah, very obviously)
arr is too young to already get padma bhushan, he has to go a long way for that...
and kjy is not just A singer, he is one of THE singers of india, so he deserves this award.

Raycas,
I don't mean this is an offensive way. Let me begin by saying that I am a great fan of both IR and ARR. Your comment about IR not having many friends may be true. But we would expect that when any national award is given, it is done without any consideration of the fact of how many friends that person, how well-connected he is and how likeable he is. In this case, the person's contribution to the art and indirectly to the nation should be the only consideration.
Let me end by saying that both KJY and ARR do richly deserve all the awards they have gotten so far. At the same time, it is a sad commentary on the Indian awards process that IR hasn't been recognized in the same way if not a better way.

It's Happy that KJY is being Awarded Padma Booshan
@ the Same Time it's so Sad that Neither PS nor TMS Was awarded any of these till now
Also to join this List SJ,IR,MSV,KVM etc..
& Particularly PS Deserves BHARAT RATNA as that of LATA MANGESHKAR..
Basically for these Awards there's an Aversion towards south..
Talented South -Musicians are always Dominated by North-Musicians ..

Digression:
A clarification to raycas:
but isn't illayaraja also famous for some sort of eccentricity? isn't it because of that he doesn't have many friends in his field (movie and music field). or am i completely wrong now? cause i've heard something like that about him often was your remark.
I assume your exposure to Thamizh media is quite limited and sincerely encourage you to have a broader picture than the opinions of a few elements of the media (& a few posters at DF) who keep harping about IR's alleged eccentric nature.
No doubt IR is not a perfect human being, and we can't demand such a great achiever to remain humble always (when average people like us sometimes act with so much of EGO). But to call him eccentric is something too much IMHO. A few points to ponder:
1. This man has started as an independent MD during 1976 (remember he was assistant for MDs many years before that) and is still doing movies. Many of these are, in commercial terms, `repeat orders' (i.e. to the same production company, to the same film director, to the same hero etc.) Do you think an ecc...can remain so longer in a competitive field like filmdom?
2. Please read the reports in a number of mags, websites about the function on his recent book release & what the industry bigwigs (including Kamal, vAli, BR) have commented on him...there is a separate thread on it
3. Anantha vikatan, one of the two most popular weeklies in TN and more reputed than the other (kumudham), with probably 0.5mn circulation & a track record of 50+ years, always writes highly about him. Even now, when he is not no 1 in the market. It publishes the photos IR has taken, his articles, his experiences...even his good gesture of sending his symphony cassette through Karthik Raja to music critic Subbudu who wrote in vikatan that he is too old & had a couple of surgeries and before it ends, wants to listen to Raja's symphony...
4. Some of the `middle class' producers & actors (e.g. sangili murugan, raj kiran etc) worship him...& most industry persons when asked to comment about him in interviews, talks appreciatively, even today. Since he is not ruling the market, why should they do that if he has rubbed them the wrong way?
5. What about the experience of directors like Fazil & Balu Mahendra who even now continue with IR...I don't think they are any less talented than KB & MR who chose to go away in search of a new MD.
Please try to see the whole picture before forming your `opinion' about any person is my humble suggestion...

raycas,
my attempt to give meanings of padma awards are as follows:
before that imo padmashri < padmabushan < padmavibushan < bharatha rathna ( "<" just a crude form of comparison to show the weightage thats all).
Padhma, as you said is Lotus and is the national flower hence represents/means our nation(India).
PadhmaShri ~= An esteemed person of India (Shri/Thiru etc denotes esteem).
PadhmaBushan ~= A ornament worn by India (ie. this person is such Gem to Our MotherIndia) and hence
PadhmaVibusha ~= A more precious ornament worn by India.
yeah! KJY deserves this upgradation.
KJY is not a "mere" singer he himself is a "creator"; KJY got these Padhma awards not only based on his Cine Play back performance but also based on the classical carnatic performance.
we can as well add MSV, KVM, IR, TMS, PS, SJ in the category of Sardar Patel, Netaji like of "noteable misses for Bharath Ratna"; Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi "noteable misses for Nobel". It is better not to award them so late. A small redefinition of the proverb to " its better 'not' than late" :-)

Ithu konjam over!!
Bharath Ratna is already becoming another kalaimamani type of award. So I think its only for the most esteemed and well deserved citizens of India. At the same time I don't justify that it was awarded only to the best fitting persons so far.
I am not degrading any artists here and I do realize that these talents they possess is all by god's gift. But still the dignity of that award should be upheld by the list of persons on whom it is being conferred upon.
All IMHO.

dear eden,
how humble should i become when asking something, without u people getting 'angry' at me? i know i have a limited expose to thamizh media, that's why i ask...and why do u think i added 'or am i completely wrong now?' in my query. cause i just don't know if it's true. i haven't either lived in india for long time to get to know about ilayaraja, nor have i read so much about him, so as u said, i don't know much about him. only on some sites and especially here i read something about him...and so i asked: is it true? is this picture of ilayaraja i have being some typical genius-eccentric true? it was not some allegation against him or something like that, but just a simple question. either u say, 'yeah it's true' and then some explainations, or u say 'no, it's not true', for this and that reason. not more and not less i expect.
'Please try to see the whole picture before forming your `opinion' about any person is my humble suggestion...'
i didn't form any opinion at all. just asked eden, just asked...
kupps,
thank u very much for ur observation. now am seeing things clearer...btw, is there something between padma vibhushan and bharat ratna? bharat ratna seems to be the highest award one can get in india, right? does anyone know any link where i can see the bharat ratna holders? read lata mangheshkar has one...
