IMHO "Paarthale Paravasam" deserves much more praise than it got, and it, according to me, is one of the unsung masterpieces of A.R.Rahman which is not appreciated by many, for reasons I cannot comprehend. And everytime, one of the DF-ers start a fight, they quote PP as example for Rahman's recent failure. I personally think it is way ahead of what we have come to expect from TFM. Probably, that is one the reason why people dont want to face upto it. So, please throw in your opinions whether it is indeed a masterpiece or just plain crappy as some say so.

Whatever said and done in this Forum, Paarthaale Paravasam is riding high in Malaysia, second only to Kannathil Muthamittaal. :)

If ARR album fails its an experiment but when IR tries that its a old fashion junk. What a doublestandard?

PP is certainly a masterpiece..
it's 1 of the best albums i've heard!
in fact i was just watching the movie!!
was certainly amazed as he belted out 1 creative track after another...
i think it was an experiment of sorts, but if the film has flopped, its coz of the story...
in fact my friend came out of the theatre and called his sis "amma"!!

i did not hear PP much..... but onething for sure, even if it was a good album, the movie made sure, it will never be one.... what a sucking movie it was..... i read someone said that "adhisaya thirumanam" was a good number - is this the last song in the movie? if yes, man, i really wished the song ended soon in the movie (along with the movie)..... such a horrible screenplay by KB.....

No..
the song was looped 3 times!!!

oh :-)..... thanks curses......
i used to think the ending of Punnagai Mannan and Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal were the worst by KB - but after seeing PP, i changed my opinion.... i hope KB does'nt take any more movies......

Not a masterpiece, but a pretty good album indeed, with native flavour tunes and lots of instrumental experimentation, IMHO.

Me agree with vin, (but being an ARR fan, I am tempted to say a masterpiece, but let me not say so). Neways, one of the best efforts in TFM.
Talkin about instrumental experimentation, I liked the way the guitarist in Nadir thinna plays in the first interlude, some notes are muted, and some are ringing. Cud someone tell me how the guitarist got that trumpet like sound on his guitar, (example, like in the end of first interlude)? Are there any pedals for this?

Songs have been highly inspired by K.Balachander's influence.
ARR did the best in PP and I love all the songs, especially Nee Thaan Enn Thesiye Geetham, nice and neat album.

PP is a quality album definitely...but not a masterpiece...ARR can do better. I wonder how he got the time for PP as he was very busy with BD during that time...some of the songs I am sure has been filled up by his assistants. IMO

only the Bgm wasnt fully done by him!
since he was committed to PP, he had to complete it..

sabesan,
Quoting the movie for the album's failure isn't correct. Duet too was a junk movie, but had one of the best compositions of arr till date (this stands next only to thiruda thiruda i my list of arr favs)...PP sucked bigtime...both the album and the movie.

except the adhisaya thirumaNam there wasn't any experiment (to go wrong) in PP :-)....Compare this with KM (had two brilliant number in nenjil & senor'E and the rest in the 'decent' category).
The only revelation in PP is this singer called balram. He did a good job in nee dhAn en desiya geethm.Otherwise, the album sucked.

IMO, PP is miles ahead of movies like Citizen and Red. Many people's main complaint was that it was like a TV drama. I agree it was, but that did not make it any less entertaining.
But if you ask whether it is comparable to any of KB's earlier works, then I will have to admit defeat. :)
As for the songs, I think this is the only album that has escaped famouse quotes in this forum, i.e., inspired, copied, recycled.... :)

PP was indeed a good album, infact I would say that better than good....hi..hi.
I listened to it some 250 times in one or two week since it release. I din't like all the songs through. For Nadhirdhinna ARR should have been hanged. What a tamil Kolai..!. Ya.. the instrumentation and experimentation in that song was good, but the life..tamil...was killed by some singer...forgot his name. Hang that singer too.
Ya..adhisaya thirumanam is just one of its kind in whole TFM in last 10 years. I am not a music expert. But, the song has more that three tunes and pattern (some thing diffeneted from usual for me) in it.
Great song. But an poor timing by ARR he was caught at the deeps and bowled . The album failed.

Sam, wasn't it you who gave "discovered" and explained a lot of technical details in the song Adhisaya Thirumanam like its beat pattern, bass score, etc..? or was it Shashi? anyway, I thought you might have a lot to say in this thread

ROTFL - u want to compare a director's 100th movie with RED and CITIZEN :-).... no way, i certainly don't want to compare it..... when Sachin hits 40, no one is going to be bothered, right..... same is the case here too..... especially the ending of the movie, hoooooooooorrrrrrrrriiiiiibbbbblllllllleeeee.... welll, whatever :-)....
Common Friend, even after listening 250 times, u did'nt like the songs ???? hmm... that's interesting, but still u want to call the album good, right..... wait, iam not going to argue that the album is bad..... i have not heard it even once, to comment on the album.... and i really am not saying that what ur saying is wrong.... my question is, u like ARR, so u say the album is good, even though u did not like it after hearing 250 times..... similarly why can't some other MD's fans say they like their MD's albums (aiaaa, i have avoided using the 9th alphabet and 18th alphabet) ? why is that a problem for some persons here ? why do they crib about people saying that "kaasi is good or azhagi is good ?".....
Common Friend, pls dont get me wrong, iam certainly not blaming or thrashing u or whatever.... hope u understand, what iam trying to say.....
and i think someone keeps on asking one question like this "why is everyone pouncing only if i bash IR, why is not everyoe pouncing if anyone bashes ARR"..... i can't get the logic..... i like a MD.... so if someone says bad about him/his music, iam certainly going to pounce on them..... and i don't like / or i am not interested in some other MD's music..... so if someone else is bashing, why would i be bothered at all ???? if someone is your *favourite* its upto YOU to *defend* him....... don't expect *everyone* else to come behind you......
if i have hurt someone with my above post, i apologize..... but i certainly feel, iam not wrong.... (at the same time, i really, don't expect anyone to accept whatever i have said!!!!! just wanted to convey my feelings)......
S, i agree with you to an extent.... we cannot quote a movie's failure to the ALBUM's failure too..... but i felt that this *movie* made sure that everyone should have a *nightmare* when they hear the songs :-).....

Firstly, it is not KB's 100th movie. It is his 100th production (including TV Dramas)
I don't want to appear petty, but you did say that the movie sucked and that's why O compared to the other movies. :)
Common Friend said that he didn't like ALL the songs even after listening to it for 250 times and this is very different from what you had said. :)
To me, it is more honest than remarks such as Kaasi songs are very good. I hope you get my drift. :)

tks for the info ROTFL.... i remember reading something related to *100* for KB..... so i thought it was his 100th movie.....
and iam not sure how what i said is different..... i repeat again - CF had said that the *album* is GOOD, even though he did not like some songs after hearing for 250 times.... well, nothing wrong in it..... same would be the case of an IR fan / HCIR Fan saying as "KAASI songs are very good"..... so what bothers some people here (probably including you) ?

OK, let me put it this way. If someone comes to you and say ALL Kaasi songs are good and another guy says most Kaasi songs are good, which do you think is a more frank and honest opinion? :)
That is why I take Common Friend's statement as a reasonable. PP had seven songs (?) out of which he didn't like one or two songs. Isn't five/six songs enough to make it a good album?
At least he is honest enough to admit that there are some songs he didn't like.
Come on Sabesan, we are talking about mortals here. :)
magix
OK, list me his 100 movies then. :)
