dear ilayaraja fans (knowers), i need ur kind help. i'm an ARR fan, rather young, only 20 years old, spent only 7 years of my life in india (3-7), started hearing to tfm only after ARR came, so stuck to his music, now, with hj, ysr and others, i also started listening to theirs. but there is a legend whose music i like, at least i got to hear some of it here and there, and i must admit i liked it. of course i'm talking about ilayaraja. but as this legend is told to be the master of combining quantity with quality, i find it difficult to start listening to all his songs. so my request is following:
could u people name me songs of ilayaraja which one will like from the first time hearing onwards. i mean songs which were just great hits, for a start only the ones in the 80s. i have heard following ones, and liked them very much, so the songs u name should go in this tradition: songs of 'nayakan' (with most famous 'thenpandi cheemayile', my favourite), 'abhoorva sahootharangal' ('pudhu mapilaku', 'raja kaya vecha','unnai nenachen'), 'dalapathi' ('rakamma', 'kaatu kuyilu')...that's all i know till yet.
so please only the ones which will at first hear strike ur ears...like the ones i mentioned.
for example, when someone asked me to do the same for ARR, i would name following songs: 'chinna chinna asai' (roja), 'chikku buku raile' (gentleman), 'hamma hamma', 'uyire' (bombay), 'anjali', 'venilavin' (duet), 'oorvasi - take it easy' and others of (kadhalan), 'odakara' (indhira), 'thillana thillana' (muthu) and so on.... (the actual list would become too long)...
so kindly help!

A lot of mohan films produced by kovaithambi had the IR content in them and were super duper hits.So almost all mohan movies will have hits of Illayaraja.Payanangal mudivathillai,Illamai kalangal, uthaya geetham, thendrale ennai thodu, ithaya koil...to name a few.

if you are a casual listener and are looking for some beatsy and catchy songs choose any from the mid and late eighties; particularly anjcali, agni natchaththiram, punnagai mannan, michael madhana kAmarAjan (especially shivarAththiri), (90-s veera, ponnumaNi, ... ) ... . if want to go a bit deeper go for the earlier ones (like annakkiLi, bhadhrakALi, iLamai UnjalAdugiRadhu, panneer pushpangaL, or the mid-90s like ponnuvITTukkAran, kaTTumarakkAran, ... . of course, there are some like payaNangaL midivathillai, mudhal mariyAdhai, maNvAsanai, kadalOrak kavithaigaL which sound great at all times. go through the listing in raajangahm (http://www.raajangahm.com/ric/index.html ) and have fun.

eden...though you have enlisted commercially super hit films..just made it coz of songs..but IR's genius work can be seen in number of other songs sometimes even from many unknown movies..The greatest asset of Isaignani is his inherent knowledge of composing songs to the situations. In Nayagan, a movie widely known for its excellent make, everybody will accept thatsure Kamal's acting combined with Varadha bhai's story was illuminated with Raja's great, unmatchable compositions. How about Dalapathi? thevar magan (tell how many of you were not emotionally induced by the great BGM and song during thevar's funeral..If you say "no" then I can not enlist you in a normal category). There are 10s of movies and 100s of different situations where Raja had indeed stood up. Imagine whether you have enjoyed the movie "mahanadhi" if it was too much digitally manipulated. The movie, of course was not a big hit. I would partially put this responsibility on Raja too. Don't be surprised for saying this. Raja's music was extraordinary and people felt the real effect in their heart. I wud say they avoided to put themselves in repeatedly and hence the movie was a big flop. I donno how the producer felt. But there was absolutely no blame on either Kamal or Raja..They have done their part perfectly. Producer would have liked if that movie contained songs that contained some digitally manipulated sounds which probably would not have suited the situations at all. Just watch the songs 5 times in Sun TV and rate it as no 1. One other uncomparable movie in my view is "Avatharam". I can not explain my feeling to others..definitely people who have peronally seen or felt or experienced that kind of village life would have obeyed to Raja's songs..I can't put even 5% of feeling in my words..Having seen Kutti and heard recent songs like "Undhan rajyathil yaarum ingu Anathai Illayamma" and " Thankachi..thankachi..", I feel Raja still remains at where he was. He is how he was. I am eagerly waithing for Kasi..I am sure there are atleast a couple of heart touching songs that is worth waiting for..So Raycas, you have asked to constrain a phenomenon in a paragraph.I am sorry to say that these words are not going to make you feel atleast 10% of what I (we) have felt.I am lucky to say that I lived and enjoyed every moment of this era (mean Raja's songs). And probably this is the reason why you see number of attached, HCIR fans in this forum. Whether somebody can overwrite or reach an identical chair in people's mind only time has the answer. But the existing scenario presents an obvious picture that this is going to be nowhere soon.
