Artistes often have the habit of throwing exaggerated statements. These statements are not to be taken as evidence at all...they are highly subjective and often entirely exaggerated, and have become cliches.

Eg: BMKs remarks about SPB, SPBs remarks about Mohammed Rafi, KJYs remarks on Rafi, KJYs remarks on SPB and vice versa, PS's remarks on Lata Mangeshkar and vice versa, there is no limit.

The fact is they were all highly accomplished artistes...each with a unique and well developed style. Trying to make statements like "XYZ is the greatest no matter what in the WHOLE OF INDIA" doesn't serve any purpose to me. Yes, SPB is surely one of the greatest things to have happened in Tamil (and therefore Indian) music in general. Yes, we can try to argue out whether he was the greatest singer in *TFM* during *HIS* time (evidence can be that he was the favourite of most MDs of *HIS* time, he sang different types of songs, he picked up songs very fast, he didnt require rehearsals etc.) But then similar things can be said about Yesudas in Malayaalam, Rafi in Hindi etc.

It becomes highly subjective if asked who is the
greatest in such and such field, B or A, X or Y.
However there are some aspects that are quite objective. These are the matters that can be
discussed without prejudice, and partiality.
Well, it is very difficult to convince people
as who is the greatest, but it is quite reasonable
to argue that who made the most profound impact.
So let us discuss it.

Chitra, that song is from 'Manitharil iththanai nirangala'-1978. SPB and SP Shailaja (humming).MD-Shyam. Great song!

Raghu, MIN starred Kamalhasan, Sridevi, Sathyapriya and Manorama. However Kamal's pair is not Sridevi- he is paired with Sathyapriya (Arvind Swami's mother in Roja). This song is filmed on some Telugu actor, who was Sridevi's pair. Another good song in it is 'Penne bhoomoyadi' by SJ and VJ. There is one more song by Kamal and Ceylon Manohar- 'Mama manasu ippo nallale'.The film was directed by RC Shakthi.

I'm sorry I don't know about its availability online.

About 1984-85 there was a Hindi film made,
with the cast of Meenakshi etc. The film was
christened as "Swati". Meenakshi Seshaadri
played an angry righteous young female's
role. The hindi version had some songs by SPBS.
Interestingly, the Kannara version had KJ
yassu Daas' voice.
There was a humorous song rendered by SP Subraamanyam in that movie. It was one of
the few high quality songs by SP Baaloo in
Hindi (sorry Raghu). Can anyone identify the
song -- the humorous, comical one.

This thread i didn't want to enter at all!! Anyway.. i think the thread has been started by some hard core SPB fan. I think it is a highly subjective thing. One might say KJY. Other might say Mohammed Rafi. SOmeone might say Thansen!!(we haven't seen or heard him).. Someone say Lata Mangeskar is the best ever produced.. We cannot conclusively say so and so is the best. It is very general. Singer includes Carnatic, Ghazal, Playback singers. SPB is never a great Carnatic and Ghazal singer. He is just a great playback singer. Ideally the topic should be

"S.P.B is one of the greatest male playback singer India had ever produced"...

in Ghazzals - Taloot Mohammed(pardon my spelling), M.rafi, Dr.PBS, Hariharan

in Play back singing - ONLY DR.SPB is the greatest!!!

I have about bunch of hindi friends here. None of them have particular liking to SPB!! Some love kishore kumar. Some love Mohammed Rafi. Some like P.B.Srinivas. All the sourastra guys in Madurai adore TMS as "Baba Baba". Some people like Chandrababu some like A.M.Raja. We cannot conclusively say so and so is the best in superlative degree!!! He has to stand out from the rest of the singers to earn that title!! According to mallus KJY is god let alone singer!!!
Probably KJY has more hindi followers than SPB. Songs like Gori tera, Jaane Maan Jaane Maan will change the equation. Agreed?

KJ Yassudaas had a brief stint in Hindi film music -- from 1975 to 1978. I have never heard a Hindi song in his voice outside of this period.
