V.Kumar: Malarum NinaivugaL

Saravanan is starting a new series on V.Kumar, titled 'V.Kumar: Malarum NinaivugaL'. He has been in touch with V.Kumar's wife and son and is planning a comprehensive series of articles on V.Kumar. I am sure this will be a treat for VK fans. This will also feature unique introductions to the songs by V.Kumar himself, in his own voice. Thanks to Govind and VK's family for their help on this.

  It is nice to read how integral a part of a movie a Music Director was in those times, though his recognition is much lesser compared to the movies today.

  Anti-IR group in this forum often quote about IR's ego clash with KB, often painting IR as the haughty...now what are they going to tell about this episode of KB with VK, one recognized as a `humble' composer?

  So that is the reason for the split.It is sad that when a partnership breaks one takes the high road leaving the other.. V Kumar may be because of his shy nature couldn't go asking for movies and without KB was left with whatever work that came his way ;-(

  Drawing parallels between VK-KB incident with IR-KB may throw us back to earlier "kaLarpirar"days.(( Now VK's career is getting mapped well chronologically.Lets not disturb it by bringing in KB-IR fracas;for all we know that VK remained a humble and honest personality throughout his career.

  How much more nostalgic it would have been if you had also given details about the time when you first came accross these movies!
  In case of Arangetram, for example, if you had recounted as when did you (belatedly) watch the movie (you could not have come accross it in 73 as a 3 year-old) and the initial reaction to it, that would have redoubled the enjoyment. It means so much to us,the nostalgic buffs of the 1970s and 80s.

  Lokesh, since I don't want the focus to wander too much from VK and his songs, I don't digress much!
  
  I saw Arangetram only on TV, around 12 years back. I had never seen it before.
  
  As you said I was too young when it was released. The first movie that I was taken to watch was aatukkara alamelu, and I loved both Alamelu & Ramu, not necessarily in that order :)
  
  My first glimpse of arangetram was M.N.Rajam's malarum ninaivugal, sometime in the late 70s. She was interviewed by novelist Usha Subramaniam. Rajam spoke about the role of Visalam in arangetram, and the scene that was shown was terrible sequence where she makes a paste of arali vidhai in the dark. The expressions on her face sent a chill down my spine!
  
  I saw moondru mudichu sometime in the early 80s. And as Mythila had also recalled the climax of arangetram was shown in MM. I became curious about the film and asked my periamma (the only film fan in my family) about its story. She didn't seem ver comfortable about telling the story :) The outline she gave was that it was about a girl who sacrifices everything for her family. That put me off as it seemed just like another sob story.
  
  But when I did get to watch it finally, I was shaken by the brutal starkness of the theme :(

  Aatukkara alamelu is fondly rememembered by me for another reason (apart from the obvious one!) my parents took me to the movie as a break from studies - vaada oru three hours relax pannalaam-bang during my matric exams (public) . Even in the late seventies our neighbours konjam aaditaanga ! at my father's confidence in his son. That I repaid his confidence then and almost floundered a year later is another story!!

  Alamelu, if I remember right, made a steady growth (in size, I mean) from the middle 70's to the late 70s. I missed seeing most Tamil movies in the 80's because I went abroad. Then the next I saw her was in a SUN TV serial called "Chinna Papa Periya Papa" and was shocked. She seemed to have done an exponential growth in the 80s and 90s! :))))
