Song of the Day: aasaiyE alai pOlE from thai piranthaal vazhi piRakkum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aasaialai.rm
- Sung by Trichy Loganathan. MD is K.V.Mahadevan. The film *ed SSR, M.N.Rajam and Rajasulochana. Has several good songs like 'amudhum thEnum edhaRkku' and 'thai porandhaa vazhi porakkum' which used to get featured in oLiyum oliyum every pongal.
- Seems like the song was written in a unique manner. Manisegaran states that 'Aasaiye Alai Pole was written at a railway crossing while waiting in his car for the train to cross. He penned the lyrics on a cigaret packet. Trichy Loganathan who was there with him had requested to be made the singer when the song was to be recorded. So came the chance in Thai Piranthaal Vazhi PIrakkum '.

Song of the Day: engengO sellum from pattakkaththi bhairavan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engengo.rm
- Sung by SPB and SJ. MD is IR.
- What a beautiful song in this horrible movie :) I guess they were doomed when they decided on this name for the movie! This forgettable film starred Sivaji. The film was one of the first to have its songs recorded with stereo effect.
- The song's nonchalant style, the way it gently progresses without elaborate orchestration, makes this song one of my favorites. The humming of SPB and SJ also creates a romantic mood.
- Arasu writes:
Those days,(If I remember right), the first movie to have a music director on a hoarding was for the movie Payanangal Mudivathilai. IR's picture was a watermark for every film poster from then on.
When I went to record some songs on a cassette (no original cassettes those days, only LPs) with my list of IR songs, the shop owner offered me the option of listening to "Pattakathi Bhairavan" on his LP Player. After listening to "Engengo Sellum" for a few seconds I was stunned. The shop keeper said "Intha madhiri music kaetadhe illayai Sar"...

- The song has a good guitar prelude. Check out IR and the Guitar: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/21743.15511.3.html

Sorry for digression. Still I am in Poove Poochudava Hangover.
I read the posting of reporter. The sentence "Puzhungip Puzhungi Azhuvathu" provoked my memory. I had cried like that only once. That was the day when I missed someone I loved most. It was a month back. When I reached home, someone rang the bell. I remembered the line "Azhaipu Mani Endha Veetil Ketalum". After listening the same song in Song of the day, everyday I am singing the song while on the road. even while waiting for the signal. "Naalai Indha Vellai Paarthu" song also similar effect. the only difference is the mood. but both songs express the pain.
Regarding today's song. It is a good song. IR has given great duet songs than this.

Magic of early IR---spellbinding song! SPB and SJ adding to the magic--the lingering emphsasis on the last syllable of the words in the charanam brings so much beauty to the song.
Jagapathi Art Pictures' Pattakkathi Bhairavan finds place effortlessly among Sivaji's worst films ever. Bizzare wigs, ballooned belly, bell-bottoms, bright coats of incredible hues--these were Sivaji's bedfellows, and he was at his cacophonous loudest in PP :( Btw, PP was Sivaji's 205th film, released on 19th October 1979)
The film was a remake of a Telugu film, and had besides Sivaji: Sowcar Jananki, Jaiganesh, Sridevi, Jayasudha and others.
IR had another winner in 'Devathai oru devadhai'-another unforgettable SPB-SJ wonder. Other songs were 'yaaro neeyum naanum yaaro'(SPB), 'jil maalish boot polish' (SJ-PS), 'nenjukkulae singakkutti'(PS-SJ) and 'varuvaai kanna neeraada'(SPB-PS)

Friends,
PB is remembered for the strange combination :
Sivaji paired against Jayasudha, with Sridevi as his sister!

IR's creativity rages unleashed in this song. The intricate guitar work placed like protective boulders in sharp turns just ebbs the song along into the unknown with chimes, strings and other magic. From the ranging string interlude sound to where SPB picks up the line as if he's reacting to a pleasure wound with "haaah"...that whole sequence is the musical image of a lichened rock being christened by waves.
Damn, I long for this IR.

I think this film was produced by Rajendra Prasad (Telugu). In one of RP s earlier production "engaL thanga Raaja" Sivaji played the character "Pattakathi Bhairavan".So RP must have thought it apt to name this misadventure II "PB".
Sivaji s "Kuppai thotti" dialogue was famous and some review rightly remarked how nice it would be to dump the movie in the same "Kuppai Thotti".
On the song, well, vijay i am now seriously considering....afterall Mohan/Murali have now sivaji s company.Saravanan I strongly object to your comments on Sivaji.Only Sivaji fanatics have the right to comment Sivaji s coat, wigs etc .Drawing an extraordinary comparison.....only bharathi can call Kannan en sevagan not Periyar or even ordinary bhakthargaL.
Beautiful song and smoothly rendered by both SPB and SJ.Devadhai and yaaro certainly do not belong to the class of this song.
Any good MD s imagination would go wild for the words "engiruntho" "engengo" "engeyo" "engey"-probably they would relate the words to the place in their heart where their creativity resides.Nice choice BB.

Although 'Yengengo sellum' is a musical marvel with excellent guitar/violin preludes and interludes, my vote goes for the simple and sweet melody
'devathai ival devathai'

Saravanan,
adhAnE pAththEn! When you said PP I was wondering if you meant Pilot Premnath, which also had the dubious honour of having all the eyesores you listed as Sivaji's bedfellows (OISG - mannikka vEndugiREn!!), even though it came the year before. My favourite song in PB is "dhEvadhai" - a song which just floats across to you in the air, the vocals and BGMs flowing seamlessly into each other. I just have to think about this song to get reminded of 8:00 - 8:30 pm thirunelvEli vAnoli nilaiyam and all the associated memories of home and a bygone age. One of my main gripes with the "engengO sellum" song is the "haanhh" stuff. Udhaya - mannikka vEndugiREn! One man's pleasure is another's pain ;-)

What I meant by "BGMs", was the interludes (as they are poularly known.) I used the technical term used in the industry - sorry if I confused anybody.

Ramki, are you sure? I remember an elder Sivaji, with Sowcar as his pair, and a younger Sivaji too. But I don't remember any elder Amitabh in Parvarish (Jaathe ho jaane jaana, aakhri salaam lethe jaana was a jolly good song!)

I remember discussing this song with SL once ina nother thread about the loss of shruthi in TFM songs. At exactly 0:34 mins SPB's "pon vaNNaNgaL" is out of shruthi in this fabulous song. SL had earlier found that SJ had missed shruthi in this song. SL, woudl you care to explain ?
