Well, as far as my memory goes...here's a small list...
R D Burman: Ulagam Piranthathu enakkaaga
Laxmi-Pyaare: Uyire Unakkaga, Ragasiya Police
Manoj-Gyan/Gyan-Verma - lots of 'em!
Uyire unakkaga was a success isnt it? at least the songs? How come nobody else dared to enter the southern market? Was it IR's absolute dominance (raajangham!)?
I feel this Manoj-Gyan/Gyan-Verma has been by far the most successful, with hits like senthoorapoove, another Viaykanth movie (the semmari aade song!), inaintha kaigal...anything else?
Who are these two anyway? Anymore news on them? What are they doing now?
And finally, is this song anywhere on the net (any format would do!)...its from senthoora poove, its a small song, sung in the movie while he's returning in a open horse carraige to his house...goes something like 'vaarango vaarango...'. I just love this number!

oh god please...not again. I'm not here to compare them with IR.
Yeah 'nathiya nathiya' was from a movie starring Vijaykanth, Suresh and Nathiya. The movie was called 'Poo Mazhai Pozhiyuthu'. Was it RD Burman who scored its music? Can anybody confirm? Yes, its songs does have that hindi'ish touch.

Karthik S,
The MD for "Poo mazhai pozhiyidhu" was RDB. RDB also scored the music for a (dubbed from Telugu, I think) film "Anbu thambi" (dir : Jayaprada).
LP scored for "Mangai oru gangai" for the same producer (Kovai Thambi) after Uyire Unakkaga, but the film and the songs failed. I guess, that decided their fate in TFM.
Bappi Lahiri has scored for Aboorva Sagodharigal, Paadum vaanambadi, etc. The latter was a remake of Disco Dancer and so were the songs.
Manoj-Gyan was a duo comprising of Manoj Charan and Gyan Verma. Manoj is from UP while Gyan is a Punjabi. They split sometime in 1989. Gyan Verma scored music for a couple of films on his own like Inaindha KaigaL, Sathiyavaakku, etc. Manoj Charan tried his hand at scoring in a film titled "Pandhaya kudhiraigaL" but the film never saw the light of the day.
Manoj lay low for a few years, built a recording theatre in the meantime (a part of which collapsed later), before coming back as a producer-MD in 1998 with the name Manoj Bhatnagar. He produced and MDed two films "Enrenrum kaadhal" (* Vijay) and "Good Luck" (* Prashant). Both films bombed and that was the last one has heard of him so far.

Karthik S, you have asked for the reasons of their longevity vis-a-vis IR's presence. Then, why would'nt you want someone to compare them with IR ? :-)
I feel IR was at his peak around this time, and that was a reason for their music not catching on in abig way.
Secondly, LP, BL etc were busy composers in HFM also during this time, churning out 30-40 odd films a year in Hindi. This might have made things impossible to concentrate on the TFM market.

...with relatively less remuneration as well:-))

thats interesting...why would any top HFM composer agree to do a TF with less remuneration...more so considering they have to contend with an absolute king in south (IR)?
Strange!

Can Salil Chowdhury (Azhiyatha Kolangal) also be included in the list?

Endrendrum kaadhal songs have gone somewhat unnoticed. On the whole, I find it a good album compared to those of Deva, SAR.
Especially, O thendrale with SPB & AS is superb
Kangalaa, minnalaa is another good song.
