NOV, Thalaipae thappappa. Kaala kattam is one of the most important things for making comparisons. You cannot compare Archemides with Issac Newton. Ovaiyar with Bharathiyar. Summa maembokka thalaipa koduthu ellarayum paithiyam aakadeengo.

I don think there is anything wrong with the thalaippu!! TMS/PS is the right pair as well as SPB/SJ.
Considering the versatality, my vote goes to SPB/SJ. Even if TMS were to be at his peak in the 80s and 90s, he wouldnt have impressed us as regards grace. SPB definitely has grace and softness with melody. Dont say that TMS times did not see songs with grace and softness. Guys will kick me out of TFM page if I say so. Something was missing in TMS's voice. May be softness? May be his ganeer kural overwhelmed grace and softness.
Nothing like SPB's voice. I think SPB shall stand out as the best vocal chords India has ever had!!I
shall go all out to defend his voice.
In the PS/SJ comparison, we have certain songs that stand apart just 'cos SJ has rendered them. PS is softer no doubt. Yet, SJ is versatile, again. Any situation, any artist!! SJ would merge with the artist. PS would indirectly say she is singing, or make us feel so!!

Isai priyan is right. Gopal do you think SPB would have impressed TFM fans back in the 50's and 60's with his soft, sweet voice.

Do you think SPB can sing Ponal Pogattum poda for Sivaji ? or Engey Nimmadhi ? or Ninandhu ninaindhu nenjam urugudhe ?
Kaala kattam is the right word. TMS is as great as SPB. TMS's voice was a major factor in building MGR and Sivaji as superstars. Hundreds of songs of TMS/PS are still fresh and IMO will outlive SPB/Sj duets.
But to compare singers from different eras

I think SPB and SJ are the best .
One cannot compare NEwton and Archimedes outrightly but
one may well compare them in their methods, approach
etc.
Comparing Newton and Socrates is absurd .
SPB and SJ indulge in more 'bhaavam' than anybody else.
AS far as the argument ,TMS singing engae nimmadhi,
ponal pohattum poda, let us listen to TMS laughing
with flavour and zeal like SPB does ,
TMS's voice would be equivalent to eructation ...
to say the least .
I do like TMS's 'vasantha mullai polae' etc . But while
TMS can only excel in the higher octaves SPB can excel
in all the vocal hemispheres.
While TMS's voice would sound whimsical, anachronistic,
for Gemini Ganesan ,SPB's voice would adapt to
anybody in the field.
If SPB is limited a little in the higher octave area ,
TMS's limitations are numerous ; he is sans;
versatility,mellow (when compared to SPB).
If SPB's voice is a lullaby TMS's is the alarm to
wake you up .

Hey Guys, I don't think this topic was reg. comparing TMS and SPB's voice. They were not contemporary performers and hence I feel that it is not correct to compare both. May be a new topic can be started on this issue. IMO, I like both TMS-PS and SPB-SJ. Both of them have given superhit songs in their times.
Take for example the following songs by TMS-PS:
Ennai yarendru enni enni nee parkirai
Nadhiyil vilayadi kodiyil thalaiseevi - Pasa malar
Naan malarodu thaniya een indru nindren -
Naadu adhai naadu adhai edhu veedu(very famous MGR song)
Ore muraidhaan unnodu pesi parthen nee oru thanippiravi
And SPB- SJ's songs:
Suvvi suvvi nee paadamma seethayamma - Chippikkul muthu
Kanmani anboda kadhalan naan ezhudhum - Guna
Kanmaniye kadhal enbadhu karpanaiyo kaviyamo -
Mazhaiye mazhaiye ilamai muzhudhum nanaiyum varaiyil vaa -

Kanmani anbodu - Guna did not feature SPB. It was Kamal and SJanaki.

As a late comer to the topic, I need to agree with all of you who said that we cannot compare artistes from different eras. Therefore, this is a moot point. Nammoor, shall we move on?

When MSV and IR are compared why can't
TMS and SPB be compared .
Your inherent admiration for TMS should not
stop from comparing two singers., in
their modalities,deliverances,versatility etc.
kural in any age should and need to be compared. they remain consistent throughout
the evolution of music . Only music has attired
different garbs .Voice rendition has been the same . This is not a moot point but the best
topic .
By the way , where is the is Mr NOV.

Sorry for being absent for a while!
Some of you don't want to compare TMS/PS and SPB/SJ? And why not? Yengo idukkirathey! Is it because while you feel the vote should go to TMS/PS but feel disloyal to IR beacuse he is not featured in this pair???
We are comparing the pairing here and it doesn't matter if they are from different periods. If not, why are we comparing MSV with IR or even IR with ARR?
Anyway, both pais gave very good songs to the TFM and our comparison is which team appealed to you most.

I think the right choice would be SPB/SJ. Considering the versatility and changing pace of tamil cinema, it is surprising to learn that they have given numerous together. We should also appreciate Dr.Illayaraja for extracting the best from both their voices.
