Dear Friends,
I am starting this thread as of late I happen to hear people saying that "Raja is for Melody and Rahman is for Rhythm"! But in my opinion, Raja is the King of Everything! Because in Rhythm, He has done songs with rhythm instruments only like :
1)"Raja Rajadhi" - Agni Natchathiram
2)"Ilam Nenje Vaa" - Vanna Vanna Pookkal
etc.,etc., I would like to get more of His special rhythms! Please post relevant postings only!

I would like to add the following songs with Rythms of Raja:
Poo Potta dhavani: Kaakki Chattai
Meenkodi theril: Karumbu vil
Thottam Kanda Raasave: Pagalil Oru Irvau (the song later lifted in Thriuda Thiruda)
Aasiya kathula: Jhonny
The cemetry song from Idhayaythai Thriudathe

The speciality in Raja's Rhythms is the place where He stops and re-starts the rhythm with magnificient rolls. I suppose it holds a key part in the "Rajamuthirai" that is seen in His typical songs.
The rhythm timimg too is really complex. Listen to:
1) Kathi Chandai Podamale - Jallikattu (Das Das)
2) Megam Kottattum - Enakkul Oruvan (End Piece)
3) Poove Sempoove - Solla Thudikkudhu Manasu ( All rhyths are used in 1 song, best example of fusion)
etc,etc....

Raja composing songs are spoiling the tamilian to international standard. If he must improve his standard atleast to learn in millennium. I regret that IR spoiling the tamilan futures by folk songs. There is a limit to folks songs not each and every style look like folks it is very boring cannot be tolerate any more from IR. Repeative folk songs with slight modification in style never be a good songs and it is not appreciated. I regret to be IR fan.

I think we have to recognize the fact that Raja was the first music director to come up with Rhythm based songs while keeping the melody element alive and he used a lot of fusion in his compositions while doing that.
Pani Vizhum Malar Vanam - for example is based on pure carnatic raga but also rhythm based given in a light form while retaining the purity of raga (this is something impossible for other MDs)
Ponn Maalai Pozhudu is another example
can give more examples if necessary
All the other MDs that followed are just taking what Raja started to what they think is a new level by increasing the %ge of Rhythm and directly basing out of a western hit, etc.,

Actually, it is probably not even % of Rhythm, it is just increasing the volume of the percussion accompaniment.
A typical IR rhythm I can think of is, 'mEgham karukkaiyilE, puLLa thEgam kulirudhadi'. This song has the best bass lines for a folk song.
(Bala..take that pacifier out of your mouth !!)

Thats IR Poove Sempoove is by IR not Chandrabose
I forget the movie name ,actors Karthik,Radha Ravi .If I am right movie name is 'Mella Thirandadhu Kadhavu' or something.
It also got few more good songs like 'Enadhu Vizhi Vazhimeley'
That song was badly picturized though,till date its the best fusion song!!

this is a polite request from me and the all
music lovers to bala and all those people like
bala.
first of all, try to understand what is music...
its not like copying some beats from western and then mixing(really great)some indian music.....
Dr.maestro illayaraja is a genious.its really unfortumate that his symphony has not come.but
his background scores(he has used synphonies in lots of movies) and his albums will speak for him.
nobody can ever handle the raagas as he has handled.
he has not given good recognition here....
if he was born in some other country, he would have become another beethoven or mozart...
so lets all try to worship this maestro's works
and spread this message to all music lovers.

UV, when vikatan wrote the review for 'solla thudikuthu manasu', they praised the choreography that comes in the interludes of 'poovE semboovE un vaasam..'. Do you think whoever reviewed that movie had a bad taste?

IR's innovative rhythm arrangements for `poongAtRu pudhidhAnathu' has probably inspired ARR for `kAdhal rOjAvE'...
Other innovations:
`paruvamE, pudhiya pAdal pAdu'
`uRavenum pudhiya vAnil'
(both from NK, these songs if played on radio to uninformed guys of current gen, they may decide it's by ARR)
each song of Johny had innovative rhythm (which'll put most of today's so called great rhythms in shame)
Looks like Mahendran kept encouraging IR for different percussion arrangements in each of his movies...even `aLLiththandha boomi' had a special arrangement, `Eh mAmA, kObamA' too...so was Maniratnam...
