BGM. Often used word in all ARR Vs IR threads. The only defense the IR fans have. The only thing IR fans say ARR lacks.
Coming to think of it, Whatz so good about his BGM? Nothing path-breaking or out-of-the-world, i should say. I was watching "Poovizhe vaasalile" yesterday. Horrible BGM... He keeps on playing the songs "Oru kiliyin pirivinile iru kiliyin uravu" & "chinna chinna rosa poove" in the background. ( Now, if ARR does that, he deserves CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ). And in some scenes he gives some sounds that you will get to hear only in hand-held Video Games. (scene where sathyaraj hides in a pit, for eg) Now, IR fans can pounce on me after seeing the film for yourself.
Anyway this is just the tip of the iceberg. If it happens to be a village based film you can find the "SAME KIND" of thaarai/thappattai played in the background (especially in chasing & fight scenes ). In one thread i read that "Thenpaandi seemaiyile" song is played at many places in Nayagan.( To give punch ofcourse, coz its IR ).
Im not taking any credit away from IR. He has given some good BGMs in some movies. But how can that make him THE authority in BGM. Agreed that in many films he has not used the songs themselves as BGM. But is it enough just to compose a new piece, however bad the piece may be? Shouldnt it be quality over quantity ??
Now on a different note, Dont you guyz think that ARR concentrates more on the interlude music in songs ??? Dont you think he has composed some of the greatest-ever interlude music pieces ?? If he can do that, cant he score BGMs. ( On the contrary, did IR ever concentrate on interludes? ). The fact is that ARR has composed beautiful BGMs but not many ppl seem to appreciate it. People are sticking so badly to the statement "ARR cant compose BGMs", for their own reasons. Some useless guy first made this comment & IR fans instantly stuck to it as they knew they have no other defence. I ve been listening to the lotsa BGM pieces posted in the arrfans group and they definitely sound great. ( Those who saw May madham in KTV y'day will definitely agree with me ). IMO, they criticize ARR for the sake of criticizing.
Expecing great deal of bashing from IR fans.

I admit I am not a music expert, so someone has to explain to me what an interlude is. I thought an interlude is the music that appears between "stanzas" in a song. Is that right? In that case IR has given some of the greated interludes I've listened to. But WhyNot/ItsMe appears to think otherwise. In another thread too WhyNot was saying she always fast-forwards IR's interludes cos they are not very good. So I am thinking an interlude is something else. Can someone please clarify?

"If he can do that, cant he score BGMs"
you are asking a question .... "cant he score BGMs?" means "he hadn't scored good bgm, why ?"
so, you are agreeing with that fact ...
catch my point ?

......so u mean 2 say ARR doesnt know 2 compose a good BGM?......u ppl r nuts......tell me one film of his which hasnt had good BGM
i do agree dat IR is gr8 but dat doesnt mean dat ARR is not...IRs music is more folk based....his bgm too is on the same lines....he is actually better of with those village subjects
he concentrates more on melody as 4 his songs are concerned....but guys u need 2 admit dat most of his bgms r so hopeless with all those thagara dabba sounds and weird things with his keyboard !!

"but guys u need 2 admit dat most of his bgms r so hopeless with all those thagara dabba sounds" ... what does that mean for you ??
to my mind, the best bgm of ARR is for thiruda thiruda, but it doesn't match the standard of IR bgm's !!

kp,
Does mouna ragam a village based film?People remember the tunes of IR's BGM..they are hummable..can u remember atleast one BGM of ARR?
I can remember one guy shouting like a ulcer patient in the film kadhalan whenever rahuvaran appears on screen..
In my opinion the failure of directors like Bharathiraja and Balachander in their recent films is becoz they left IR..The emotional impact which IR creates by his BGM is unparallelled in TFM..
Remember the Karthick and Revathi part in Mouna Ragam or the BGM of Idhayathai thirudathey or kadalora Kavidhaigal..only he can do it..
Can ARR score BGM for a movie without songs??
IR may not be as good in producing HIT songs now..but his BGM was never in question..How can a man produce songs for the same situation for more than 20 years? You can say that the film situations are also same..but each scene evokes a different mood to the veiwer..his BGM may seem repetitive sometimes but that may be due to usage of same instruments..i agree that he uses the songs as BGM in some films..but its only few..
In all of his film reveiws in magazines he get due recognition for his BGM always..
Regarding interludes i leave it to other IR fans..

Its Me:
I agree with your intention of starting this thread, if it is meant to say that ARR to does some fabulous BGMs.
I also, agree with you about some of IR's films that have some bad BGMs. But, man, if you have to pick some one for BGM, then its got to be IR. In this area he has no equals. IR's BGM are best, but in many films he either overplays or sodhappifies. But, in India there has not been any one or is any one who is as apt as IR in BGM so consistently. I don't want to confuse this with ARR. I too admire ARR's BGM a lot and I saw May Madam and I wanted to quote that here. Excellent BGM. I have listened to that ARR groups BGM stores.
But, he needs to improve on that. He doesn't do it consistantly. If he could do that for MM then he can do it for any film. I don't know why is he not doing that. In lagaan he did a fabulous job. IN KKKK also, he did a great job. But, I think he only spends his energy for BGM in big films.
Don't say that IR is just an other MD in BGM. He is probably a milestone in BGM that others should try hard to reach at least a bit closer.

i would like to discontinue/terminate this thread coz the very greatness of IR (i.e. his BGM) is suspected. i damn those guys who dare to comment about IR's BGMs. please listen to Kadhalukku mariyadhai last half an hour yaar. you will know what is BGM and also listen to the ponnu paakara scene in roja where vaishnavi speaks with Aravind samy where you can listen to the famous no. (as it is claimed) of ARR, Telephone mani pol ( bit being Pudavai kadayil pennin silayai)...
please cut this thread for IR's sake... i.e. god's sake

Pras,
>>> you are asking a question .... "cant he score BGMs?" means "he hadn't scored good bgm, why ?"

Try to read the post carefully. I asked this question and the immediate next sentence says, "The fact is that ARR has composed beautiful BGMs but not many ppl seem to appreciate it". I put this question in people's perspective and answered it in my perspective.
Peeps,
>>>Can ARR score BGM for a movie without songs??
The fact is that ARR has scored BGM for FIRE which didnt have a single song. And in every review of the film, they showered great praises for the BGM.
Anyway my intention was not to belittle IR's BGMs. I just wanted to touch upon the fact that not all his films have great BGMs and that he too has sodhappified in many films (Napolean's waterloo).
Regarding interludes, try to read my post clearly. I had said that he doesnt concentrate on interludes. It means that he gives more importance to the tune than interludes. It doesnt mean that IR has never composed interludes or he doesnt know how to.
When i made this statement, the fact i wanted to bring out was this. You can identify any ARR song just by listening to the first few seconds of the interlude music.( meaning: its unique for more than 90% of his songs ). But in IRs case it happens only with some superhit numbers but not all the numbers. You will definitely mistake one song for another if you try doing this.
I once again want to reiterate that im not an IR-hater. Just wanted to share what was in my mind. And also to give a better picture to some ppl who live in an imaginary world saying that Deva's BGM is better than ARR blah blah blah...

its me?
what do you mean by interlude?.
Any IR song I remember i remember the interlude too. If i know the song, I can recognize by few seconds. please, stop your interlude crap. Just extending the beats and tune in instruments doesnt make interludes.

I have heard so much about directors falling at raja's feet after seeing their movie with bgm-bursting into tears etc..
I think directors working with ARR will burst into tears or fall at his feet if he manages to give them their quota of songs in the stipulated time:-)
