6 Songs : Mind Blowing!!

Simply mind-blowing
November 20
Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”
Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.
Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

To the fellow forum members,
I am writing this review mainly targeting the ones who are interested more on Mani's AE (in my opinion Yuva is just a business proposition for Mani) and the ones who had known him and followed him since his Pagal Nilavu days. By the way, I am one of them...and had been an admirer of him since Mouna Raagam (even watched him from close quarters). Now to the review....
Plot: Nothing new ....students entering politics to clean up the system. No background....no justification....nothing at all. Mani has not bothered to answer the "Why" or "How" sort of questions in any greater detail.... very shallow!
Screenplay/Narration: Draaaaging at most times. Has spent way too much time on introducing characters. The time spent on the Madhavan-Meera sub plot is outrageous. The main story revolves around Surya....but Mani had spent way too much time on the other two (mainly Maadhavan) sub plots. By the time he finishes the introduction...he realises that the story is yet to be told...sorry Mani...it was too late!
The only unique thing about the film was the 3 way (back and forth) narration of why that incident had to happen. I feel Mani might have just been impressed/inspired by this technique and....that might just have been the sole inspiration to start the script...that is where it all went wrong. Is Mani starting to make the same mistakes Kamal (the other intellectual who often gets very excited with western ideas and themes) often makes!
Inaddition, most of the scenes and dialogues remid me of other mani movies ....the "viturra...ellathaiyum viturra" dialogues since Nayagan...and many scenes from Agni. But...should admit....some scenes between Surya/Esha and Siddharth/Trisha brings out the youth in him....flashes of Mani's brilliance!
Picturisation of songs: This need not be a specific category in a review...but as someone who had walked all the way from Anand in Mount Road to Mandaveli dumbfounded after watching Agni Natchathiram and would have spent a fortune on SLR cameras and film roles inspired by the Mani/Sriram combo...I always go in with an expectation when it comes to Mani's films. I should say....it has been a big let down. He seems confused. The fact that he had started the movie without the songs and later decided to have them is clearly evident....his heart and soul is missing. These days even the main stream Masala directors picturise songs better. He could have easily avoide them if he didn't need it in the first place. The way Janaganamana was picturised almost brought tears into my eyes...with trucks load of people...and all that...is Mani aging? Yaakai thiri was ok and was an experiment when it comes to 'situation' of the song...but Vairamuthu would have committed suicide if he had seen the picturisation for those lovely words. Sandaikozhi was not necessary for the character and situation. Dol Dol & Nenjamellam...were a waste and Goodbye Nanba was just ok....but the "Anbe Anbe" (Agninatchathiram) shot by the same director almost 15 years ago on a similar beach was much bettert filmed. Mani running out of ideas again?
Cinematography: Nothing much....simple as that...we expect something different and better quality in Mani's films. Even the idea of differentiating the characters with different lenses and shades of colours will not reach the audience for special attention.
Songs/BGM: Well...I don't know what to say...Mani had let ARR down big time. BGM was good in places. Titles was impressive...but it is pathetic that in a review of Mani's fim the ttle gets mentioned!
Acting:
Surya - Brilliant screen presence, intensity, body language and performance.....well you come to expect this from him even in a movie directed by an average director. He...he alone carries many a scene on his young but broad shoulders.
Maadhaven: Excellent performace. A Vikram or Surya might have done a slightly better job as the character had a lot of scope. As I expected..you could almost sense that Mani had a hidden agenda to give Maddy a lift....many scenes which are not necessary for the main plot and a lot of scope....and to be fare...Maddy has done justice to that role and Mani's gesture. Mani wanted to change his image and give him a "macho" image which he lacked. Maddy looks different and done well.
Siddarth: done what is expected of him.
Trisha/Meera: impressive
Esha: out of place
Overall: I don't have any hidden agendas or I am not biased like some of these websites which are hell bent on promoting Mani's (more so of Kamal's films) even average films. At the same time I don't have to pull him down as I have admired him the most.
Mani...you have let me down badly!
Verdict: Audience (mainly youngsters and Mani admirers) in the cities (A centers only) and overseas might see it once and it will be an average film. It will be a flop every where else!

Just saw AE.
Maddy is a bad guy who ill treats his wife Jasmine and has no principles. He gets used by his insincere brother to kill student leader Surya who threatens to enter politics much to the dismay and unhappiness of villain cum manthiri Barathiraaja.
Barathiraaja tells Maddy’s brother to kill Surya before he enters politics. Maddy’s brother gets Maddy to do the job. Maddy tries to kill Surya by shooting him but Surya survives. Barathiraaja gets scared now and tells Maddy’s bother to kill Maddy before getting caught and exposing Barathiraaja. Maddy suspects this and quickly kills his brother and now joins Barathiraaja to get more dirty money and power himself. Surya enters politics and Maddy gets life sentence. Barathiraaja doesn’t get caught but Surya will challenge him in their political careers. During the Parliament meeting, the camera goes slow motion when Surya and Barathiraaja come across each other and the movie ends.

Kamal beat Mani to it. Mani has used the same story telling technique that Kamal used in Virumaandi. Whether Kamal copied it from English movies or not doesn't matter but Kamal beat Mani to it. What more, Virumaandi's story is much more powerful than AE. For that matter, it is much more powerful in EVERY department.
Songs wise, Virumaandi's songs are a power house. Even though most are village songs, you can feel these songs and bgm are brilliant. The action packed orchestra just mesmerizes you and glues you matching every single scene. This is not the case for AE. It's songs are just to showcase ARR's pop talent that many in the cinema didn't buy and they walked away for puffs and to get snacks. AE's BGM was synthetic and terrible. Seems like Rahman just don't know how to compose bgm. You can hear classical, opera, pop, trance and carmina burana. He just throws everything in there. Doesn't gel with the movie. Really disappointing.

Student Surya enters politics to challenge villain Barathiraja.
Madhavan enters jail and given life sentence for trying to kill Surya and also killing his own brother on behalf of Barathiraja.
Student Siddharth gives up his US trip and joins Surya's political endeavours.
Really terrible movie.

I saw the movie today. I was disappointed the movie had no ending. I mean the villian doesn't die and the villian-hero madhavan is still alive...what's going on??? All the songs were wasted...I think Mani was high when he was shooting the songs. All the nice songs were wasted with stupid slow motions of people walking here and there. A R Rahman didn't spend alot of time doing background score as he did for the songs. This movie sucks but because of the name of mani and arr it will run for awhile. Don't believe me? GO SEE IT AND U'LL KNOW!!!!
