What is AR Rahman's undisputedly BEST song ever, and what is his WORST composition? Songs like PUTHU VELLAI MALAI from ROJA and PUTTHAM PUTHU BOOMI VENDUM from THIRUDA THIRUDA has a funny way of clinging on the back of your mind, just like the evergreen KANNALANE and UYIRE UYIRE from BOMBAY...not to mention THENDRALLE THENDRALLE from KAATHAL DESAM and ANJALI ANJALI from DUET. So which is his BEST and WORST?!!!

AR RAHMAN's best so far in my opinion is NAA CHELI ROJA VE(telugu) that is(i think) KADHAL ROJA VE (tamil)from ROJA..the chorus at the beginning of the song and mixing make it something special..and add it to it SPB 's breathtaking voice..its a great composition.

If imitation is the best form of flattery, then ARR's best song in the minds of his peers (that is other MDs) is 'Mukkaala Mukkaablaa' - because that song has been copied about 6 to 8 times. :-)

Guys...what about his WORST composition? I think they would have to come from FANTASY, one of the album that he released in 1993 I think. Then there is the that song from "Kizhakku Cheemayillai" for Paandiyan's character "Yetherkke Pondatthi Yenna Sutthi Vappathi"...Has any one heard AR Rahman's composition in "Ashokan" which came out in 1993 (I haven't!), and for the movie Beauty Palace which according to my friends had only one listenable song, and even that was actually just the recomposition of the song "Raakholi Rende" from "Uzhavan" with diferent lyrics. Any comments?

I think best to date is 'Kannalanne' from Bombay because everything in that song was perfect, well except for where ARR uses the qawwali singing. That was wierd on first hearing but one get's used to these things:-)

aruvi: I thought the qawwali was refreshingly different from usual qawwalis. I liked the most in Kannalanae :-).
My vote for ARR's best: Thiruda Thiruda - absolutely awesome album overall.
Candidates for the worst: Pudhiya Mannargal, Fantasy, Daud.

His recent one from "Sangamam" "Varaha Nadhikarai oram..." sung by Shankar Mahadevan is very good, even though he has copied Nasarat Fateh Ali Khan. The song sung by M.S.Viswanathan and Hariharan was equally good.
The worst is from the picture "Showkiamma, Kanne.." tunes copied from different songs of yesteryear films.

I might agree with Fantasy and Daud (even Daud had one superb song sang by KJ Kesudass which was "Poonthendralle") But Puthiya Mannargall!...I have to disagree. The intro music for the song "Yeduda Antha Sooria Melam" was absoulutely SUPERB (which ARR recycled again with some changes for the intro in the song "Maaya Machindra" in Indian). I couldn't stop listening to that song! Then there was "Vaanill Yeni Pothe" which was also nice, and the catchy tune of "Nee Katthum Selai"
The album was good! :-)

No doubt `KaNNaLane' is the best yet! Close contenders are `Anjali Anjali' (Duet) & `Nenjinile, Nenjinile' (Uyire)!
In music, it's almost impossible to classify any specific thing as the `worst'...IMO

Best: Gentleman, Minsarak Kanavu, Sangamam, Karuththamma, Iruvar
His best movies have what's needed in all good music: unique composition, creative lyrics, decent singing.
Worst: Fantasy (a total washout), Asogan (absolutely uninspired work), Ratchagan (had promise with a couple of tunes but killed entirely by Vairamuthu), Padayappaa (same reason as Ratchagan)

Guys,
Many have missed "Duet". Do I need to tell more?
Best of ARR: IMHO
(1) En kadhale en kadhale - One can write a thesis on SPBs rendering and the flowing sax piece.
(2) Anjali Anjali - Duet again. Even though the interludes were great I thought they sounded out of place(may be he cud have used elsewhere).
(3) Pudhu vellai mazhai ingu pozhikinrathu - No explanations needed.
some more...
Worst of ARR
(1) Sambho sambho from pudhiya mugam - the interludes were different. Overall it was one of his worst ever.

Talikng about "Ratchagan"..."Pogum Vali Ellam Kaathre" by Chitra was one SUPERB song! "Padaiyappa" songs takes getting used to, and I agree absoloutely with Vaidy on "Sambho Sambho". Reading all the above responses, you guys would realize that most people are talking about the song "Kannalanne" from "Bombay". There is only one word that aptly describes this particular song - MAGIC

I rate 'Malargale Malargale' from 'Love Birds' and 'Minnale Nee Vandadenadi' from 'May Madham' to be the best ARR compositions so far.
I can listen to them any number of times.
These are closely followed by 'Porale Ponnutahyee' and 'Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali'
